After talks with school board members the Edctor Speake defends local officials from criticism and urges voters to support the Butler County storage and maintenance garage proposition. New residents Mr and Mrs Lyle Enabait of Rockford become parents to a daughter born Wednesday April 19 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. Damon Cheney Dies at 70 in New Mexico Hospital

Damon Cheney 70 of La Plata New Mexico died Monday evening of a heart attack at the Veterans Hospital Albuquerque after a period of arthritis. He formerly resided in Greene and is survived by his wife Alice a daughter Elva of La Plata three grandsons Bobby Cheney David Thomas of California Ted Thomas of La Plata a sister Lois Pringle Greene three brothers Will Cheney Greene Rev A G Cheney Topeka Kansas and Clair Cheney San Antonio Texas and several nieces and nephews.

Cedar Falls youths in J P court on larceny charge

Gary Southard 17 Veryl Sammons 18 and Larry Edgeman 17 all of Cedar Falls were arrested by Cedar Falls police for larceny in the nighttime. Southard was arraigned in J P Court in Allison with bond $500 not furnished and he remains in county jail. Sammons and Edgeman appeared in J P Court with bonds of $500 each, bonds furnished, and released. They are accused of taking farm tools oil and gasoline from a farm near New Hartford.

Webster City man jailed for uttering a false check

Lee I. Wiley of Webster City appeared in J P Court in Arison on Monday evening charged with uttering a false check. He was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail.

Lighting Drive For Night Baseball At Local Field

A fundraising drive is underway to install an adequate lighting system for night baseball and improved football field lighting. Scout Court of Honor Held at Elementary School

The Boy Scout Court of Honor occurred Monday evening April 24 in the new Elementary School Auditorium. Scotty Thompson of Charles City, district scout executive, spoke. Ten tenderfoot to life awards were presented to Scouts and Explorers, with multiple merit badges earned.

Samuel Ritter 77 dies in Greene after illness

Samuel Sours Ritter, 77, died early Sunday at his Greene home after an illness of asthma and heart trouble. Born April 18, 1884 near Marble Rock, he lived in Marble Rock and Greene all his life. He married Pearl Thompson in 1908. they celebrated a golden wedding in 1958. A former lineman for A T and T and later with Butler Bremer Telephone and Interstate Power, he helped install the power line between Greene and Osage. His hobby was raising full blooded rabbits shipped nationwide. Surviving: three sons Dale Waterloo, Don Marble Rock, Wayne Greene. three daughters Ella Mae Merrill Marble Rock, June Johnson Alta Vista, Nadine Busching Tulsa. nineteen grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, three brothers Philip Aredale, Lloyd Ilinois, Paul Wither Wisconsin. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Church of Christ. burial in Rose Hill cemetery. Williams Mortuary in charge.

Brown Leaves Butler Extension

Melvin Brown, Butler County Extension Assistant, resigns to take a similar post in Chickasaw County. He has served on a temporary basis since last November, filling the vacancy left by Varlyn Fink who returns as Extension Assistant in Butler County on May 1. Porter Pleads Guilty In Greene Court Over Bad Checks

Jerry Porter of Aredale was arraigned in Justice Frank Knight's Greene court and pleaded guilty to writing a non sufficient funds check. He drew an $85.00 check at B and W Store in Greene and was sentenced to five days in Allen County jail. A hold warrant exists in Franklin County for Porter on bad checks.

Ramblers Take Second in Osage Track Meet

The Greene Ramblers earned second place with 46.18 points at Osage. Wunsch won the 320 yard dash in 23.3 seconds, Kingery the low hurdles in 22.6, Rattler the 880 yard run in 2:12.8, and the 4x? relay team of Eldred Kingery Wells Wunsch finished first in 47.5 seconds. Butzlaff was third in the discus, Blum second in the broad jump, and Baker tied for fifth in the pole vault.

Former Resident Mrs Leo Gorman Dies in Minnesota

Word has been received of the death of Mrs. Leo Gorman, 68, on April 8 at her home in Fairmont Minnesota. Former Greene residents and Crystal Theatre owners she survived by husband and two sons Frank of Georgia and William of Minneapolis Minnesota. One son Robert was killed in World War II. Funeral services were held at Fairmont on Monday April 10.
