Myron Eikenberry returned home last Wednesday from Cedar Valley hospital after major surgery following an accident at the Beguelin Cement Plant on Saturday April 6. Mrs. Vern Wilkins came home the first of the week from Allen Memorial hospital in Waterloo after major surgery.
Final standings show Allan Chevrolet top after a 3 1 victory over Fullerton Lumber in the Thursday league. Other Thursday results include Allison Implement over Farm Bureau 3 1 and Schaeffers Grocery over Lutheran Brotherhood 3 1. Friday mixed league results list Roy's Repair and Bailey's Real Estate near top with strong scores. Yearly stats highlight Murphy Transportation high games, Greene Cafe high series, and top individual scores by C Shultz, M Krull, D Wedeking. Ladies league totals note First State Bank and Drake's notable team figures with top series.
The Rambler baseball squad edged Clarksville 9-8 as Jerry Newton homered in the seventh to seal the win. Newton added a single and Allison tripled while Clarksville pitcher wildness fueled nine walks fringe. Greene’s freshman Wharton worked three innings before Newton and Niepas finished. Greene next hosts Parkersburg then travels to Allison for two tough tests.
Twenty five Iowa high school seniors were named candidates for five Nile Kinnick Memorial Scholarships at the University of Iowa for 1957 58. Robert G Andersen son of Dr and Mrs B V Andersen of Greene is among the contenders invited to campus April 30 and May 1 for examinations and interviews to determine the five winners.
The Butler Soil Conservation Commissioners met on April 16 with ASC manager Burton Sprole Extension Director Ivan Wikner and district managers J B McAninch Richard Mikelson plus local farm equipment dealers. They discussed coordinating Soil Conservation Extension Service activities with equipment demonstrations for upcoming field days, resulting in two events a Forage Field Day in June and a Conservation Field Day and Plowing Match in mid September.
Eight persons were baptized at the Church of the Brethren on Sunday evening. A large candle symbolizing Christ of the world lit the candles of the eight recipients. Merlin Schuknecht, Marie and Judy Smith, Robert and Eldred Kingery, Janet, James Jr., and Timothy Parks were accepted into full church membership.
Fifteen local Boy Scouts under Clyde Frud den planted 300 Red Cedar saplings on the scout grounds at Greene last Saturday morning. Leonard Nichol and Henry Smeins assisted. They started at 9:00 am and finished by 10:30 am. Arrangement for the trees was made by Clycel Frodden. The trees replace ones sold by the Scouts for Christmas trees to fund their projects.

Mrs. E. H. Hunt died Sunday morning April 21 in Kirksville Missouri after a stroke. Services were held at Garry Funeral Home Bancroft Iowa at 1 30 PM. She was mother of Dr. M. R. Hunt of Charles City formerly of Greene.

Private First Class William B Geil arrives Atsugi Japan after 14 months with the Marine air wing. Draper D Spratt calls from Key West after a six week Cuban waters cruise and a 30 day furlough ahead. Navy career spans 31 years.
The Junior Chamber of Commerce Teen Age Road E C written exams occur Friday April 26. Interested teens should contact Mr. Tornowski Greene Community School or Dick Witwer Greene Junior Chamber of Commerce president. Driving tests are on Greene main street Sunday May 5. Local winner advances to state finals at Maquoketa May 18.
Mr and Mrs Paul Devereux of Dougherty welcomed a son born April 15 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing nine pounds named Donovan James. Mr and Mrs Clair Johnson welcomed a son born April 18 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing six pounds 13.5 ounces named Dean Alan. Mr and Mrs Louis Downing welcomed a daughter born April 20 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing eight pounds one ounce named Carla Kay. Mr and Mrs Marvin Albrecht welcomed a baby daughter born April 21 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing six pounds 9 ounces.
Greene Community Schools Parent-Teacher Association holds a regular meeting Wednesday evening May 1 at 8 in the gym. A family fun and hobby exhibit is planned by a committee chaired by Edwin Scheer with co chairs Ivan Clikeman Calvin Kelly Wayne Fis cher Carl Worley Aron Jewell Leo Gabe Cliff Bur roughs L D Prunty Francis Teeple and Clayton Becker. Opening ceremony and decorations are by Dayton Coldwater and Bennedette township 4 H girls under Mrs Herman Stubbe. A men's quartet will provide music and refreshments will be served by Loren McRoberts B G Brunsma Ralph Litterer Galen Martzahn Max Reidenwirth and Hoton Bellows.
Mrs Cliff Crane was taken to Mercy Hospital in Mason City Sunday evening for observation.
Miss Nancy Squires daughter of Mr and Mrs Everett Squires reigned as queen over the 34th annual Teachers College relays at Cedar Falls. She was elected by the I Club and attends as a sophomore. Attendants were Sally Shepherd Karen Hansen and Karen Kelly all elected by the I Club.
Mr and Mrs Ronald Barth of Hampton announce the birth of a daughter on Tuesday evening April 23 at 9 38 in Cedar Valley hospital Charles City. The baby weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces and has been named Ranae Carrie. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Charles Slocum and Mr and Verle Barth of Greene.
Rambler track squad retained the Corn Bowl Track Championship with 59 points at Charles City. Anderson true vault, Pierce sprint wins, Allison sweeps the 220 and 440, plus relay wins highlighted by the 440 and Medley. Next action at the Comet Relays in Charles City.
Mary Lou Murphy, a student at Mason City Junior College, is named on the Dean's List for the third quarter 1956 57 after earning at least a 3.0 average. She is student teaching in kindergarten at Jefferson School Mason City and is daughter of Mr and Mrs Keith Murphy Greene.
Mr and Mrs Russell Meyers have purchased the theater building of Floyd Ramker local building contractor and will move the Gamble Store to that location as soon as extensive remodeling is completed.
A stag supper will be hosted at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Tuesday April 30. Committee chairmen Jim Drake and Clyde Frudden urge all members to attend and enjoy a good meal.
Ivan Wikner, Butler County Extension Director, describes a new fertilizer placement method that improves efficiency. The technique places fertilizer to the side and below corn seed, reducing seedling damage from contact and promoting early growth. Images show both traditional split boot and new row planting placements, with the best results when applied at planting time.
About forty attended a meeting at Mrs. M. K. Sperry's home on Tuesday April 16. Mrs Lou Ann Mitchell of Town City gave a travelogue. The club will sponsor an August flower show chaired by Mrs Harry Green and invites clubs and individuals to enter classes. Embroidery and Women's clubs will visit Clarksville clubs on Friday May 3.

A court room gathering in Alison tomorrow at 8:00 PM invites all Butler County residents to review proposed courthouse plans. The Butler County Board of Supervisors will discuss the project cost and the necessity of a new courthouse.

The sophomore class of Greene High School sponsors a semi formal dance on Saturday evening April 27 at 7. The entire Greene High School is invited and admissions are one dollar. Attendees will vote for a king and queen. Wayne Marty and Dennis Mair will attend with no chaperone.
