The Girl Scouts plan a bake sale at Hamilton Furniture Store this Saturday March 30 1957 to raise money for uniforms and troop treasury. They meet March 27 at Mrs Hoben's and March 28 at 6 15 pm swim at Charles City YMCA. They near completion of a leathercraft project and on April 3 will present the colors at PTA.
The Allison Community Club hosts the Federated Women's Clubs of Butler County on Thursday at the Associated Church. Registration begins at 9:00 am with assembly singing and pledge. Rev. R J Niederwimmer delivers the invocation and Mrs L W Buddhagen welcomes. Agnes Murphy of Sumner will be main speaker. Mrs E M Mark of Clarksville leads the club institute. A noon luncheon, a baton/tap class by Mrs Richard Lynch, and a vocal solo by Mrs Arvid Lindell highlight the afternoon, followed by a history talk by Mrs James H Graven and a one act play by Allison members and hat making demo by Mrs Fred Nicklaus. Officers to be elected. Allison hosts a courtesy tea.
Mrs. Max Goldman of Titonia will guest speak at Greene Parent-Teachers Association meeting on Wednesday April 3 at 8 PM in the school gymnasium. The program includes Girl Scouts, music, decorations, a nominating slate, and a mixer with refreshments served in the cafeteria.
Carman Glaspie son of Mr and Mrs Robert Glaspie has enlisted in the Navy and is in nine weeks of basic training at the Naval Training Center Great Lakes Illinois. Terry Kaiser son of Mr and Mrs C S Kaiser has joined the Navy and is undergoing training at Great Lakes with address listed. Verle H Steere son of Mr and Mrs Albert W Steere took part in a 15 day field training with the 10th Infantry Division in Germany after enlisting in May 1956.
The Youth Center will be open this evening from 7 to 9 30 at Greene High School auditorium. Parents will supervise. Sponsors last Friday were Mr and Mrs Darrell Davis and Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh. Next Tuesday night is the regular Youth Night with Ping-Pong Tournament added. high school students are invited.

The senior class will stage Here Come The Brides at the gym Friday March 29 at 8 00 p m The three act farce features Jimmy Took Bill Thompson Aunt Ellen Uncle Dan and a cast including Jim Maxwell Joe Allison Roger Thomas Dorene Teegle Audrey Hudson Larry Voighs Donna Osier Lois Smith Karen Siemens Betty Folkerts and Wilbur Frericks as the players The plot involves a mistaken marriage and comic disguises with a lively ending.
The Butler County American Cancer Society kick off dinner was held in the Allison church basement on Friday March 22 with about 115 attendees. Vernon Larson chaired. Rev F A Laxamanna gave the invocation. Mrs Horace Daggett of Parkersburg led fundraising and Dr Richard Utne spoke on cancer classifications. Ping pong tourney set for April 2 at the high school gym with girls and boys singles matchups announced.
Five local bowlers Jim McLennan Sam Sneed Elmer Stock Roy Henline and John Hamilton faced five Rudd players at Al's Lanes on Sunday. The local squad won with a team total of 2356 to 2258. Roy Henline led for Greene with 190 in a single game and 510 series, while Howard Smith top-scored for Rudd with 476.
Warren Hoover pastor of Root River Church in Preston Minnesota will show slides from his trip to Germany at the Church of the Brethren Sunday evening March 31 at 7730 The church notes the denomination supports relief efforts including food clothing and livestock shipments to aid war torn and poor regions Hoover says he helped with a sea voyage carrying heifers to Germany and a prior load to Russia All local men are invited to view the presentation.
Roy Henline scored 279 in open bowling at Al's Lanes Sunday. His 279 came on one strike one spare and a final strike out, keeping his league average at 169.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club of Greene will open on Wednesday April 3 with a dance for all members and guests. An orchestra and lunch will be provided. Attendees are urged to come early as a door prize drawing will be held at 9 30.
Wednesday games at Bristow Elevator show Bristow Elevator beating John Deere Implement 4-0 and Nettleton Insurance and Auctioneering top Miller Real Estate 3-1. Ross and Miller Plumbing won 4-0 over Kemning's Sinclair. Sneed led high singles at 225 and 599 series with Sneed and Henline strong. Friday night Mixed League saw White's Tavern beat Willey's Clothing 3-1 and Mets and Bills win 3-1. Shultz top singles at 207 and 528 series for Sneed. Thursday results include Fullerton edging Farm Bureau 4-0 while Adam Chevrolet swept Allison Implement 4-0 and Al's Lanes topped Vala Lumber 4-0.
Henry Burma ends a long career in Iowa public life. He served Butler County as sheriff for 14 years, four terms in the State House including two as Speaker, and long tenure on the Board of Control. His work spanned corrections, rehabilitation, and mental health reform, earning Iowa gratitude for shaping policies from custodial care to outpatient treatment.
Plan to attend the Butler County 4-H basketball finals at Allison gym on March 30 starting at 6 20 p.m. The south half will crown two winners after Monday’s Parkersburg game. North half winners decided March 29 at Allison. Public invited, small admission charged to cover expenses.
Town and farm owners with fruit trees raspberries and grapes are invited to pruning demonstrations on Friday March 29 and Thursday April 4. County extension director Ivan Wikner will show pruning at 9 39 am at Lester Severs farm one mile north of Clarksville on March 29. On April 4 demonstrations move to Albrecht Orchard one mile south of Greene at 9 30 am and Darrell Needham farm four miles south of Greene on the river road at 1 30 pm. Garden publications on pruning fruit trees growing raspberries and strawberries are available. Requests should be made at the Extension Office in Allison.
Frank Kingery of Greene was aboard the Golden State Limited Rock Island Train when snowbound at Mead Kansas stranded all passengers for 48 hours before release. The event left travelers marooned and awaiting assistance as winter weather halted travel.
About two hundred Butler Cattle Feeders attended the annual banquet on March 19 and gave $58.60 to beef promotion. Speakers included Bill Jones of Union Stockyards and Kenneth Falk of the Iowa Beef Producers Association. Directors elected were Glenn Stockdale and Don Knapp. Ralph Marsh, Greene and John Hansen, New Hartford, continued as directors. Prizes were awarded in the 1956 price guessing contest with Carl Weiss of Nashua winning a scoop shovel for guessing fat cattle at Chicago in October at 31.40 and Truman Wamsley of Greene winning a scoop shovel for guessing feeder cattle at 21.15.
The Tilton Comedians will open their summer season here on May 16, 17, 18, and 19. Mr and Mrs Tilton plan to arrive in Greene by April 1 to begin assembling the show.
Mr. Carl Taylor, long hospitalized in Iowa City, has shown improvement after undergoing major surgery on Thursday. Doctors report he is somewhat better and continues to receive care at University hospitals.
New residents Mr Raymond Hauser and wife welcomed twin daughters at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City on March 19. Kathy Rae weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces and Karen Rae weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces.
