Kaiser announce birth of daughter in March

New daughter born to Airman Second Class and Mrs Dale Kaiser of Springfield Missouri on March 22. The date also marks the first birthday of their first daughter. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs C S Kaiser of Greene.

Scout Camp at Marble Rock Gets Tree Planting Drive

Land managers led by John Ludwig coordinate a spring tree planting at the Shell Rock river site north of Marble Rock. More than 160 Scouts will plant 5,000 Red and White Pine seedlings April 13, with October 6 dedicated to a separate 10 acre planting of Silver Maples Green Ash and Elm. A wood duck nest project was also added by Shell Rock Explorer Post Scouts.

Greene Community to stage 10th Annual Athletic Show

The Greene Community School will present its 10th annual Athletic Show in the High School gym next Tuesday evening April 9 at 8 00 p m. The program features tumbling acrobatics trampoline stunts and exhibits of future basketball stars with participants from third grade through high school. The public is invited to attend.

Bedells Welcome Daughter Julia Stuntz Born in Abbott

New residents Mr and Mrs Edgar Bedell of Minneapolis welcomed a daughter Julia Stuntz born at Abbott hospital on Wednesday March 27. The baby weighed six pounds three and four ounces. Mrs Bedell is formerly Jane Stuntz of Greene.

Mrs McCartney Died At Rest Home In Charles City

Mrs Mary EricCartney 77 died Saturday at the Rest Home in Greene where she had been a patient for a year. She married George McCartney on December 18, 1919 after Louie Vietmeier's death. Survivors include her husband two daughters Mable Frank of Lansing Kings and Mrs Jesse Boyle of Bellevue Illinois a son Merle Calhoun of Charles City four grandchildren two great grandchildren and a sister Mrs Cora Mann of Charles City. Funeral services were held Monday at 3 PM at Hauser Funeral Home with Rev R N Benedict officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery.

Greene High School Pops Concert by Concert Band

The Greene High School Concert Band will present a Pops Concert in the school gym on Wednesday April 19 at 8 pm. The program features no instrumental soloists with band accompaniment and includes several vocal ensembles. A complete program will be shown next week.

Karen Curtis Wins Division I Rating at State Finals

Karen Curtis, a Greene Community Schools junior, won a Division I rating at the Iowa High School Speech Association state finals in Grinnell. She was Greene’s only entrant, winning the home contest, the Hampton preliminary, and the Hampton district contest, with the district final held in Mason City. She is a first year speech student and the daughter of Mr and Mrs Dell Curtis.

Coffee Day for Crippled Children planned nationwide

Restaurants across Iowa join with the Iowa Restaurant Association and Easter Seal Society to host Coffee Day on April 10. Proceeds fund a proposed summer camp for physically handicapped children, buying kitchen equipment and supporting a dining lodge at the camp. Local Greene cafes participate while camp site selection awaits a summer committee decision.

Conservation Contracts Offered for Butler County Farms

Butler county farmers are urged to join the conservation reserve program overseen by J F Hartwig chair of the county ASC committee. The plan pays $12 per acre annually for conserved land with options for up to 80 percent cost sharing on vegetation cover ponds forest trees or wildlife projects for contracts lasting three five or ten years. Contracts beginning in 1957 must be signed by April 15 at the Allison county ASC office with additional ACP cost assistance available for needed practices.

Jay Cees Plan Easter Egg Hunt on April 12

The Junior Chamber of Commerce sponsors the annual Easter Egg Hunt near the Veterans' Club on Highway 14 in Greene. It starts at 8:30 am and uses about two cases of dyed eggs, some numbered. Kids finding numbered eggs contact Jay Dee officials to learn the merchant name and collect prizes at the designated store. Two age areas, up to six and six to eleven, are marked for fair play.

Frudden Named 1957 Forest Industry Head in Iowa

C M Frudden of Frudden Bridge Lumber & Supply Co Greene has been named 1957 chairman of the Iowa Forest Industries Committee sponsor of the Tree Farm program. Vertrees Young of AFPI announced the appointment. The group is part of a national Tree Farm system with 44 states active and 9 800 Tree Farms covering 41.7 million acres.

The 1957 oats loan rate in Butler County is 58 cents per bushel, five cents below 1956 as oats are supported at 70 percent of parity. Premiums apply for higher grades, with garlicky oats discounted. National rates for other commodities were set higher or similar to 1956, except wheat stays the same.
