Grassley on gas tax split between city and rural areas
Charles E Grassley Butler County representative reports reader mail on gas tax division. Rural residents favor current split. city and town residents push to double municipal share, risking secondary roads funding. Ten large Iowa cities would claim about 40 percent of funds to 942 municipalities under the current formula based on 40 percent population and 60 percent need. Grassley argues Des Moines would unjustly gain under the need factor and that Butler County towns would lose population-based support when need is counted.
