Iowa deer hunters set a record with 4191 deer taken last season based on State Conservation Commission figures. Shotgun hunters totaled 3187, bow and arrow 277, and tagged plus untagged farm kills 727, with bow hunters among the nation's best at 16 percent. The 1959 harvest was 2731.

Darrel Dean Mehmen of Applington faced a speeding charge for 90 mph in a 60 mph zone. He appeared before Justice Frank Knight on March 4 and posted a 54 dollar bond to appear March 9. He did not appear, resulting in bond forfeiture.
Farmers and landowners have until April 15, 1961 to place tree and shrub orders with the Conservation Commission. Previously the deadline was March 31. Multiflora rose and conifer sell for 22.00 per thousand, other prices about 18.00 per thousand. The 4-H basketball finals are set for Bristow with Jefferson and Shell Rock 4-H clubs meeting at 6 30 p.m. Saturday March 25. Jefferson qualified by beating Madison 18 4 and Albion 20 9 while Monroe edged Washington 24 23 before losing to Shel Rock 23 9.
Mrs Paul Lewison Mrs Darrell Butzlaff and sons Robert and Donald and Mrs Glenn Hauskins were confirmed by baptism and adult confirmation at St Peter's Lutheran Church Sunday morning.
Butler County reports February savings bond sales of 124617 dollars, raising the two month total to 265086 dollars which is 23 percent of the 1961 quota. Iowa’s two month total stands at 34770954 dollars nationwide average is 18.7 percent. County chairman John McWhirter notes this is the largest Iowa bond volume for January-February since 1956.
A Greene area gathering drew about 230 sports enthusiasts for the Sportsman's Club annual oyster stew and meeting. Simon Nixt age 49 died Thursday evening at a Dubuque hospital after long illness. Born January 23 1979 near Greene to Matthias and Theresa Nixt he was a lifelong farmer. Survived by brothers Peter Greene and Malt Marble Rock and many nieces and nephews. Preceded by parents three brothers Henry Nicholas Joseph two sisters Lena and Mrs Michael Barth. Funeral Monday 9 30 A M at St Marys Catholic Church with Rev P J Boyle. burial in St Marys Cemetery. W Hamiltons Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.
Fred Koerner was released from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after a recent surgery and returned home Tuesday afternoon.
New residents Mr and Mrs John Ahlquist of North St Paul Minnesota welcomed a son Neal Jon born March 15 weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces Mrs Ahlquist is the former Carol Hammel. Mr and Mrs Leo Kerkove of Independence welcomed a daughter Patricia Ann born March 16 weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces Mrs Kerkove is the former Beverly Merfeld daughter of Mr and Mrs Lester Merfeld of Independence formerly of Greene. Mr and Mrs Elvin Moore of Greene welcomed a son William Harold born Sunday March 19 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces.
The Greene Public Library adds The Secret of the Kingdom by Mika Waltari a tale set in Judea during the crucifixion with a bold view on basic Christian events. Also added are Killers from the Keys a Michael Shayne mystery by Brett Holliday Civil War Treasury by B A Botkin and The Desert Year by Joseph Krutch a field guide memoir of the American Southwest.
The Butler All-County Music Festival arrives Tuesday March 28 at Allison-Bristow High School with band and chorus selections. About 140 band pieces directed by Henry T. Paine and 140 chorus voices led by Robert McCowen perform works from Mascagni to Bach. Tickets available from students or at the door.
Darrel Barth named general manager of Barth Chevrolet, Inc. at Greene succeeding his retiring father after twenty years in the business. Darrel has 14 years with the firm as a salesman and invites the public to an informal open house on Saturday March 25 with coffee and cookies offered all day.
Mrs Clyde Stuntz departed Friday by air for Tucson Arizona to visit her father Guy V Newcomer who underwent surgery in a Tucson hospital on February 28 following a serious illness.
Butler County plans to use 10,000 from fire insurance and up to 65,000 secondary road funds to build a maintenance shop and warehouse north of Allison. The project replaces a removed garage, relocates to county yard, and preserves 1,300 sq ft storage block.
Arthur Otto Renken 27 of Parkersburg was arrested in Parkersburg on Tuesday March 14 by Parkersburg Police for the Sheriff's Office in Allison on a charge of destroying property in a cemetery in Shell Rock on December 11 1960. He appeared in Justice of Peace court in Allison Tuesday and pleaded guilty and was fined 25 dollars plus costs.
Sixty three farmers are registered for a one day short course on Livestock Production Facilities to be held Thursday March 23 at the new Girls 4-H Building at the Achievement Show grounds near Charles City. The Floyd County Extension Service sponsors the event with lectures by Larry VanFossen and Vern Meyer from Iowa State University and the Floyd County Extension staff. Pre-registration is required at the Extension office in Charles City.
