Iowa will equip all 300 highway patrol cars with driver seat belts by fall 1962 if bids approved by the state executive council. Patrol Chief David Herrick outlined specs for 50 new cars with belts, noting factory installation costs are low and unused belts in current cars are self funded by patrolmen. He cited safety studies showing belts reduce fatal injuries and said belts would be mandated when cars are in motion. Manufacturers also announced 1962 models will allow easy belt installation.
