Private First Class Lester C. Corporon 21 son of Mr and Mrs Ira L Corporon Dougherty was honor graduate of the Fifth Army Noncommissioned Officer course at Ft Riley Kansas The five week Vietnam oriented program covered leadership instructor training general military subjects small unit tactics map reading and weapons Approximately a quarter of the course was field oriented Corporon serves as a machine gunner in Company C 1st Battalion 5th Infantry Division 61st Infantry at Ft Carson Colorado
A lightweight hog owned by Dick Huisman of Shell Rock was named champion individual of the show and the reserve champion individual belonged to Carl Niehaus of Greene. Judge Rex Boatman selected the animals from about 45 hogs entered. The event was sponsored by the Butler County Swine Producers and open to all Butler County Swine Producers. Top ten placings in the two weight classes include 190-210 pounds and 211-230 pounds with multiple entrants such as Dick Huisman Carl Niehaus Clarence Wubbena Darwin Niehaus Robert Litterer William Kruse Prentice Karstens Robert Wamsley and others.
The Honorable William Bamker proclaimed March 10 through 16 as Girl Scout Week in Greene. He urged citizens to support Girl Scouting to help girls seven to 17 gain lifelong values through exploration. An organizational meeting for a Senior Citizen Club will be held at 417 South 2nd Street on Tuesday March 19 at 2 00 p m. Don Christian of Mason City will discuss potential activities. All elderly residents and church women representatives are invited. Refreshments will be served.
Mrs. Mary Daiker, 87, died February 29 in Santa Ana California. She lived with her son Wilbur and formerly resided in Greene. Survived by one son, two grandsons, one granddaughter. preceded by three daughters Maxine Lorene Thelma and another son Merle. Funeral services were held in Santa Ana.
Greene Fire Department battles a Thursday morning machine shed fire at Ed Marzen’s farm northeast of Greene. Firefighters arrived at 7 40 as the 28 by 60 structure and most machinery tools were destroyed. cause undetermined.
Fred R. McLain of the ASC State Committee says there will be no extension to the Feed Grain Program signup. The period runs February 5 to March 15, ending Friday at 5:00 p.m. Weather has been favorable, and past extensions were tied to blizzards not present this year.
The 45 year old high school building is sound but needs urgent maintenance. The board proposes including remaining windows, front doors, and rest room renovations in a bond issue to speed up repairs. Rest rooms on the second and third floors require larger capacity and updated plumbing to reduce future failures.
Mrs Don Fiddick of Greene won second place and Shirley Lindell of Greene earned honorable mention for creative Living Portrait hairstyles at the 15th annual San James College of Hairstyling contest in Mason City. The event, held March 5 at the Moose Lodge Club, drew about 700 spectators as 65 students competed and trophies were awarded at 9:00 p.m.
The Greene Ramblerettes finish the season 18 6 and claim the Corn Bowl Conference crown with 10 conference wins. They extend a six year streak as champions and hold a 47 straight conference win record. The Greene Sportsman's Club will hold its annual meeting with oyster stew at the Veteran's Club in Greene on Tuesday evening March 19. Oysters served at 6 30 p m. Officers will be elected and five directors chosen for three year terms. Entertainment includes two films. Conservation officers Galen Heinkel and Al Roeniig will attend.
Lloyd L. Foster of Greene has been granted a competitive freshman scholarship to Morningside College in Sioux City for 1968-69. The award announcement was made by Craig Croston, director of student financial affairs. Scholarships depend on academic record, test scores, and community involvement, with amounts varying by need.
The Farmer's Inc Co op Society of Greene held its annual meeting Saturday evening with about 400 at supper and 310 attending the meeting. George Shultz was re elected director for three years and Russell Frascht and Raymond Johnson were elected as new directors for three year terms. Officers are Francis Brinkman president Dean Ott vice president John Backer secretary and Don Warren master of ceremonies of The Good Morning Show on WHO Radio.
The Greene Commercial Club will hold a meeting this Wednesday evening at 7 30 at City Hall. All members are urged to attend.
Mrs. John E. Van Eschen chairs Greene Heart Fund Drive reporting $409.13 raised from residents. She urges nonresponding households to mail in the not at home envelopes to ensure equal support for Iowa Heart Association programs fighting heart disease. Helpers not listed earlier include Mesdames Gary Smith Paul Wunsch Richard Adelmund Jim Menken and Jim McLennan.
Iowa law requires prompt disposal of all dead animals by rendering, burial, or burning. Rendering plants no longer guarantee removal as many have closed. owners face disease risks and possible fines for neglect. If rendering is unavailable, proper burial or burning is advised.

Harvey Joe Kneppe of Parkersburg appeared in District Court and pleaded guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Judge B C Sullivan fined Kneppe $300 and costs. Kneppe was arrested near Parkersburg in June 1967.
Ramblers lose to the Dumont Wildcats in the district tournament final. Also note district party caucuses set for Monday evening in Butler County with Coldwater township caucus at 8:00 p.m. at the Community Center. other caucus locations to be announced next week. Russell Duncan admitted to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment on Saturday.
Greene led 15 9 after first quarter and 34 21 at halftime before holding on 74 66. Rich Siemens scored 21 for Greene while Greg Drakle Jim Shultz and Wendell Stuntz fueled late defense and solid free throws. Luther College in Decorah held its 19th Dorian Instrumental Music Festival drawing 280 band students from Iowa Minnesota Wisconsin and Illinois. Greene High School sent four players Marcellyn Curtis Wendy Martzahn Duane Brinkman and Tim Kline to the all star section under Lt. Col. Arnold Gabriel. Marcellyn Curtis and Wendy Martzahn earned solo chair placements and Curtis performed as a finalist in a flute solo Sixieme Sola De Concert by Demerseman with Mrs Curtis as accompanist assisting the event.
Mrs Merlin Parks had major heart surgery on Tuesday March 5 at St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. She is currently in room 260.
