Citizens urge government to mind its business and stop meddling abroad. The piece criticizes officials who overspend and proposes a fair tax system and reduced government waste. It argues for placing a capable businessman in leadership to tackle debt and fiscal reform.
Mrs. Carol Kingery conducts a closing out farm auction at the farm southeast of Greene on Thursday March 21. The sale begins at 12 00 noon with Franklin Schuknecht serving as auctioneer.
Interstate Power Company released its 1962 Annual Report showing net income of 5,032,160 dollars, up 246,651 from 1961. The company notes investments of 8,477,216 dollars in new generation and transmission to serve over 156,800 customers and reports higher taxes and expenses. The firm ranked first in the National Safety Council’s 1962 contest for electric and gas companies of similar size. The report was mailed to 21,800 shareholders and 1,200 employees.
Butler County Extension Service hosts an all day weed and insect meeting in Allison at the Farm Bureau Auditorium from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Speakers Dr E P Dutch Sylvester and Dr Harold Tiny Gunderson of Iowa State University will cover weed control and plant pathology and entomology. The open meeting invites questions from the public.
Arthur Peters of Des Moines formerly of Greene was among the successful candidates who passed the state certified public accountant examinations. Certificates were awarded at a recognition dinner at Hotel Fort Des Moines recently. Peters is presently with Martin Cloutier and Sanderson at Des Moines.
The Greene Sportsman's Club will meet on Tuesday evening March 26 at the Veteran's Club. An oyster stew and smorgasbord precede the meeting. Officers will be elected, then two 48 minute films will be shown The Farmer and The Sportsman about hunting ducks and pheasants, and Fishing in The Land of 10 000 Smokies about walleye northern and muskies in Northern Canada and Alaska. All members and prospective members are invited.
Hugh Scallon announces Butler Soil Conservation District will participate in the state soil conservation speech contest. All 7th through 12th graders in the county may compete with talks on How Soil and Water Conservation Affects My Future. Local contest details to be announced later. First prize $25 bond plus cash prizes. regional and state contests follow with substantial scholarships. Deadline for entries April 1 at 5 PM.
Due to lack of interest Civil Defense classes planned to start last night may be cancelled. The courses feature nuclear fallout testing devices and are presented by three high school instructors with Cc. E. Burroughs. A second attempt will be made next Tuesday evening to start two classes, otherwise they will be cancelled for the time being.
Mrs. Vivian Kingery chaired Greene Red Cross drive reporting $419.20 raised from local residents and businesses.
Mr and Mrs Bob Feltus Jake Van Dyke and Harold Conn will represent Butler County at the National Farmers Union convention in New York from March 17 to 21. They depart Iowa by chartered bus March 16 and will tour sites in New York City before returning via Washington DC. Secretary of Agriculture Freeman will speak at the event.
World wide observance celebrates 51 years of Girl Scouting with over 3 million members, including North Iowa Council’s 5000+ members. The program centers on the Promise and Laws guiding duty to God country and helping others, with changes in 1963 introducing four age levels Brownies Junior Cadette and Senior. Leaders attend April trainings as new handbooks and guides roll out and a community fund drive continues under longtime chair Martin Senne.
Loretta Lynn Duffield seven month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Duffield died suddenly March 6 at Cedar Valley Hospital. She was born July 21 1962. Survivors include her parents one sister Teresa Ann and grandparents Loren Duffield and John Heyenga. Funeral services were held March 8 at Reid's Funeral Chapel officiated by G W Beadle. Burial in Boyland in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The annual Sutler County 4 H Leaders Recognition Banquet occurs Tuesday March 19 at 7 00 p m with C Dean Johnson reporting. Miss Carol Stine will speak on Family Life In Germany and 4 H meritorious service awards will be presented to outstanding leaders.
The Butler County Cancer Crusade will be held in April with a kickoff and training session at Allison City Hall on Wednesday March 20 at 9:30 a m. County chapter chairmen Mrs Andrew Heid Greene Mrs William McDowell Allison and Mrs Darold Wallace Parkersburg lead the drive with Mrs Charles Long of Dumont as treasurer and area chairmen Mrs Herman Johnson Dumont northwest Mrs Robert Wamsiey Clarksville northeast Mrs Raymond DeVries Ackley southwest and Mrs John DeBuhr Shell Rock southeast.
The Farmers Incorporated Cooperative Society of Greene held its annual meeting with a large turnout of members and families. Directors re-elected for three years were Francis Brinkman John Backer and Maynard Bruce. Holdover directors include Vern Thompson Dale Crosby Lyle Stauffer Edward Miller Garrett Brinkman and Jim Stuntz. Francis Brinkman was named president Lyle Stauffer vice president and Jim Stuntz secretary treasurer. William Heffernan an International Farm Youth Exchange student spoke about four months in Iran in 1961 and presented slides. Mary Logan of Rockwell attended and spoke on cooperatives and won a trip to Des Moines after placing in the Farmers Grain Dealers Association speech contest.
In Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City Mrs Alyce Kanter entered the facility on Tuesday afternoon and underwent surgery this morning Wednesday Bernard Brunsma was admitted Tuesday afternoon for treatment at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City The notices document ongoing patient care and recent procedures in the hospital.
Rev. A M Veltman will conduct a Prophetic Bible conference at Calvary Baptist Church Greene March 18 to 24 with evening meetings at 730. He has pastored at Grandview Park Des Moines and Mid-West Bible Church Chicago and currently leads Southtown Baptist Church. The public is invited to attend.
New residents welcome three newborns in Iowa. Kristen Marie Chap man was born March 11 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces to Marvin Chap man and his wife. John Peter Wagner arrived March 10 at West Suburban Hospital Broadview Illinois weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces to John Wagner and his wife. Betty Elaine Krueger born March Saturday at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces to Merle Krueger and former Ethel Starkweather. Grandparents include J P Wagner of Dubuque and Keith Murphy of Greene.
Butler County announces summer programs for advanced high school students in English and Mathematics. Courses run June 10 to July 19 at Allison High School, with tuition not to exceed 30 dollars and a 5 dollar registration fee. Eligibility and instructor details to be announced. space limited to sophomores and juniors in English and math with district approval.
The Republican Central Committee of Butler County held a fund raising dinner at the Farm Bureau Auditorium in Allison last Thursday evening. About 175 attended. Lt. Gov. W. L. Mooty spoke on upcoming federal and state bills, with a greeting from Rep. H. R. Gross. State Sen. Vernon H. Kyhl and Rep. Charles Grassley gave reports. Kyhl conducted a Q A on current Iowa Legislature bills. Greene attendees included Cliff Burroughs and several Starkweather and Bankman families.
Keith J. Butler son of Rev and Mrs G F Butler is named to the Dean's List of honor students for the fall term at Parsons College in Fairfield.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a clinic at The St. John Lutheran Church in Charles City Iowa on Friday March 29 offering free diagnostic and evaluation services for children under 21 with crippling or endocrine conditions referred by physicians or dentists. Eligible counties include Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Grundy Howard Mitchell Worth and Wright.
Tom Albrecht, injured in a March 5 ice fall, returned Saturday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City and is recuperating at Korffe.
Ronald Dayton Jenison of Clarksville was charged with no registration and defective equipment. He was fined $5.00 and $4.00 costs on each charge, totaling $18.00 for both offenses.
