The editorial laments lack of universal accord on Vietnam and the Suez crisis. It argues Russia may present a “new look” by rotating leaders but maintains the same hard line. It criticizes government efforts to buy world peace and calls for genuine negotiation.
About 430 high school and junior high musicians from seven states began daily rehearsals at the 18th annual All State Music Camp at the University of Iowa. Wendy Martzahn, daughter of Mr and Mrs Galen Martzahn, plays saxophone in the band. The camp opened June 18 and runs through June 30 with private and group instruction in band, choral and orchestral music.
Two men from Butler County reported for basic training at Fort Campbell Kentucky on June 8. John L. Rosenstock of Dumont and Duane L. Harms of Ackley joined the army. A July induction will include Roger Heeren of Allison leaving July 12. Fourteen Butler County men underwent physicals at Fort Des Moines on June 1.
The seventh annual Iowa District Amer ican Lutheran Church convention closed in Decorah with a communion service. Emeritus awards were given Tuesday night June 20 to eight retired pastors including Rev. I. J. Devnes of Clinton who led St. Peter's Lutheran Church Greene and Rev. Robert Wiederwinner of Monticello who led St. James Lutheran Church Allison.
Sup V J Tatum announces that students who did not receive earned awards last spring due to shipping delays may collect them at the school office. Students should bring their award slip and visit between 9:00 am and 12:00 noon or 1:00 and 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
Promoted Mr and Mrs Russell Frascht learn their son Scott Frascht has been promoted to Airman Second Class. He is currently on assignment in Italy and expects to return to his home base in England soon.

Loran Elvin Duffield 68 died Tuesday June 20 after months of illness at University Hospital Iowa City. Born July 1 1898 in Ellsworth Wisconsin he married Kathryn Rand November 25 1926. Survived by wife two daughters a son a daughter in law 16 grandchildren one brother two step brothers. preceded in death by parents two brothers one son and two grandchildren. Funeral at Church of Christ Saturday 2:00 pm with William Beadle Sr officiating. burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The horse racing program scheduled for Sunday July 2 at the Allison fairgrounds has been postponed to Sunday July 9 at 2:00 PM.
Mrs. Maxine Weiland of Tempe leads a reading center at McClintock High School to assist students with reading difficulties. She teaches with two other teachers in the program and is pursuing a master's degree in special education at Arizona State University. She is a member of Alpha Sigma Upsilon and Kappa Delta Pi.
Pfc. Dennis L. Viers son of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Viers left by plane from Waterloo Monday to Oakland California, from where he will depart for Viet Nam.
Jaycees will file sandboxes on Saturday July 1 after last Saturday rain forced cancellation. Families wanting sandboxes filled should call 823-4363 or 823-4238.
Five break-ins were reported early Thursday, June 22 in Butler County per the Butler County Sheriff's Office in Allison. In Aplington Diekmann Brothers Grocery lost $95 in change, 10 cigarette cartons, and a 10 lb roll of pressed ham. The Skelly Station, run by Lynn Elliot, took $18 to $20 in register coins and about $4 from a pop machine. Drever Furniture was found short by $7 from the cash drawer. In Dumont Standard Station suffered $7 from a pop machine and the cash register. Community Co-op Station saw $25 taken from an unlocked safe.
After several weeks of heart condition treatment Mrs. cua mamxer is discharged and home with her daughter Mrs. Art Herman in Osage.
Relatives in Greene county report the death of Karen Gillespie age 11 of St. Joseph Missouri after a heart condition. She died unexpectedly April 26. Survivors include her mother and step father Marie Shouse, her father Keith Gillespie of Kansas City, and grandparents Mrs. Alice McEwen of Charles City and Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Gillespie of Council Bluffs.
Bonnie Jans daughter of Mr and Mrs Albert Jans Route 1 Parkersburg was named Butler County Dairy Princess at Dairy Day in Parkersburg. She was chosen from 15 contestants with Miss Jean Janssen runner up. The winner will represent Butler County in the Iowa Dairy Princess contest later this summer.
In Webster City on Friday night the Greene Merchants lost 1 to 0 to the Ames Merchants in extra innings of the first round. Ames plated the decisive run after back-to-back hits in the &th inning with Weiss starting on the mound for Greene. The Greene Merchants meet Fairmont Minnesota at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the same tournament in Austin.
Russell J. Perry of Aplington chaired county savings bonds drives reporting May sales in Butler County of 28,259 for Series E and H and freedom shares. Five month total reaches 304,329 at 39 percent of 1967 goal as Iowa counties report May outcomes led by Decatur Lyon Van Buren. statewide May sales total 7,051,424 with five month total 46,477,621 at 38 percent of the state goal.
Master Sergeant Charles E. Truex, son of Mrs Vera P Truex of Greene, retires from the U S Air Force at Patrick AFB Florida after 23 years of service as a missile maintenance technician. He served in the European Theater in World War II and is a veteran of the Korean War. A Marble Rock High School graduate, he is married to Evelyn G Clapham.
Ken Sutton's Greene Ramblers won both ends of a Friday doubleheader. In game one Greene defeated Manly 13 to 2 after an 8-run fifth inning, with Douglas Buffridge stealing multiple bases and Hagarty driving in runs. In the nightcap Greene beat Riceville 11 to 0 in six innings as Gabe struck out 12. Greene extended its win streak to nine in a row, leading the conference.
The United States Post Office opens civil service examinations for substitute clerk and carrier jobs. Changes let applicants apply regardless of residence, with starting pay at 2.64 dollars per hour. Vacancies filled without regard to race creed sex color or national origin. Fourteen children aged 4 to 6 attended the first summer story hour at the library. An invitation goes to all youngsters in that age group for this Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Stories records and activities will be featured.
The Greene Merchants host a softball tournament on Tuesday July 4 with four games starting 12:00 noon Mason City Hamm's versus Sheffield, 1:18 Butt's Topp of Mason City against Cresco, 2:30 Greene Merchants versus Nashua, and 3:45 Carpet Line of Cedar Rapids versus Northwestern of Mason City. Semifinals at 6:00 and 7:15 p.m. and the final at 8:30 p.m.
The NIAC Culture Group discussed incorporation with NIACC leaders and NIAD Culture Committee representatives from Worth, Hancock, Cerro Gordo, Floyd and Butler counties. Norman Graven was named to draft incorporation articles for NIAD Cultural Committee.
Archery lessons sponsored by the Woman's Club begin next Monday July 3 for grades six through eight from 7:00 to 8:00 PM on Mondays and Wednesdays. Dean Constein 17 son of Mr and Mrs Alvin Constein of Nora Springs drowned Tuesday night June 20 while swimming in the Shell Rock River. He went under at about 7 30 pm in turbulent water and two friends could not help him. He was found about four hours later in 22 foot deep water near shore. Survivors include his parents three sisters Diana Delores and Dixie and one brother Gary all at home. Burial at the Nora Springs cemetery Friday at 2 00 pm at the Lutheran Church in Nora Springs.
Two local golfers placed in the Parkersburg invitational on Sunday. John McRoberts finished fifth in the championship flight with 108 for 27 holes. Dale Johnson won the 16th flight and John Whitehead of Tracr won the 11th flight.
Dr and Mrs R F Ladwig returned Monday evening from Town City where they had been called June 4 by the death of Mrs Ladwig's aunt Mrs L E Clark.
Greene Juniors plan a July Fourth weekend coffee stop near Greene on Highway 14 with hours 6 to 9 p m Friday 7 a m to 12 p m Saturday 3 p m to 9 p m Sunday and 6 a m to 9 p m Tuesday. The Greene Commercial Club and Round Grove Golf and Country Club sponsor a fireworks display at the Country Club river bank around 9 30 p m Tuesday July 4 with ample parking at Country Club and Veterans Club and officials to assist. Over 8450 dollars of aerial fireworks will be shown. Children’s races and a best decorated bicycle contest with an $5 00 prize open to ages 14 and younger begin at 9 a m Tuesday at Greene Athletic Field.
The Iowa State Highway Commission announced a re-routing plan that halves the detour length on Iowa 3 in northwestern Iowa. The new route around bridge work near the Waverly area will save about 22 miles, directing travelers via Iowa 14, County Road A, and US 218. Iowa 3 remains closed at the junction with Iowa 188.
Dr. R H Jaspers chairs the Greene Community Medical and Dental Committee which has met repeatedly to study expanding local facilities and services. The group has contacted the Sears Roebuck Foundation and Professional Builders of Madison Wisconsin about facility types, costs and financing. They inspected three clinics and consider forming a non profit development corporation with non interest bearing certificates. Funds would be invested short term to aid doctors or dentists when locating here. A fall interview program with hospitals and medical schools is planned to recruit prospects. Volunteers are welcome.
Greene's Little Leaguers defeated the Eagles of Nora Springs 6 to 4 in seven innings as Albrecht walked then McLennan and Eimers loaded the bases, Miller delivered the winning single. Babe Ruth team followed with a 12 to 3 win as Shultz hurled the victory and Stuntz, Shultz, Eimers, Trees, Jacobson and Ennen each contributed multiple hits.
The business places of Greene will be closed all day next Tuesday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The post office will also be closed with no window service or rural route delivery. Mail will be dispatched and distributed as usual. The business places will be open on Saturday night until 9:00 o clock as usual.

Robin Feldman daughter of Mr and Mrs Don Feldman had a tonsillectomy at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Tuesday.
