Mr and Mrs Don Kielman of Shell Rock announce the birth of a son named Daniel Otto on June 16 at Mercy Hospital in Waverly. He weighs 7 pounds. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Waldo Rutledge of Cedar Rapids and Mr and Mrs Otto Kielman of Clarksville. great grandmother is Mrs Tillie Kielman of Greene.
The library launches a children story hour for ages four to six starting Thursday June 22 at Greene Public Library. Sessions begin at 2:00 PM with entry through the side door and Mrs. Robert Fischer hosting as the story lady.
Mr and Mrs Paul Devereux of Sheffield former Greene area residents report six sons in the U S Armed Forces. Cpl Patrick L Devereux and Pvt Bernard R Devereux left Mason City airport June 8 for army bases. Patrick, a paratrooper, serves at Fort Campbell Ky with the 101st Airborne after a 45 day home leave from Viet Nam. Bernard, after basic training at Fort Campbell, is at Keesler AFB Miss for Air Flight Control training. John P Devereux enlisted 1966 and is in Hawaii. Bill, Alex, and Terry have served in the Army and Navy respectively.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosts a two Sunday men’s club tournament on July 9 and July 16 with 18 holes each day. Foursomes preferred, first tee at 8:00 AM, $1 entry for club members, prizes in all flights, and sudden death playoff for ties.
Jeffrey Lindell a two year old boy son of Mr and Mrs Galen Lindell fractured his left wrist when he fell from a glider on a swing set at his home on Tuesday June 13.
George Sneed achieved a hole-in-one Sunday morning at the Country Club. The shot traveled 175 yards on a No. hole while Sneed played with John Hardman and Dan Wegand. this marks his second hole-in-one following a prior ace last year.
Greene Ramblers defeated Nora Springs 3 to 1 as Douglas Ruffridge powered the offense with two doubles and a home run in three at bats. Johnson and Eimers split pitching duties, allowing 2 hits in five innings and four in two innings respectively.
Mrs Ervin Loomis and Mrs Graydon Anderson depart Sunday for Lafayette Indiana to attend the National United Presbyterian Women's Triennial Convention at Purdue University where Mrs Loomis will sing in the choir. They travel as delegates from the Presbytery.
New resident couple Mr. and Mrs. Jim Viers welcome a son born Monday evening June 19 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City. Baby John Eugene weighs 8 pounds 13 ounces and has two sisters and two brothers awaiting him at home.
At 10:00 worship on Sunday several memorial gifts were dedicated at the First Presbyterian Church. Donations included a refrigerator from Mrs. Lawrence Jepson for her husband George Folkerts from Fred Feldman for his wife, and a golden wedding gift from Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Skillen. Anonymous white Bible markers honored Mrs. Fred Feldman and Mrs. Cliff Fischer. A Communion Chalice with hangings and a table runner was given in memory of Harold Kingery by his family. Additional gifts included hymn boards and bread trays in memory of Vivian Kingery from his family. Trustee James Mead accepted the gifts as Rev. Donald K. Welsh led prayer.
Joel Backer six year old son of Mr and Mrs John Backer underwent a tonsillectomy on Tuesday June 13 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital. He returned home the next day.
Mrs. Gordon Schafer depicted as a patriotic citizen after returning a flag blown from its standard during the May 18 windstorm. Jaycees Lloyd Bigler and Jim Viers presented the official recognition last Friday evening, noting her courteous act amid heavy rain and traffic.
Susan Astor, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Astor of Greene, will come home Thursday after a ten day group journey into Kansas. Four other North Town Girl Scout Council cadettes and about 200 scouts from Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas joined the excursion. They traveled the Butterfield Trail by bus and wagon, stayed at Fort Hays College in Hays, visited St. Joseph Missouri and Laurence Kansas, and learned archaeology geology and natural history during dormitory stays.
Butler County residents may enter a cookout king contest on July 31 at the County Fair. Six events cover beef pork lamb poultry turkey and a novelty class. Top local contestant wins a portable TV and advances to the Iowa State Fair.
Sergeant Jim Anthony, son of Mrs. Mabel Anthony, departed Waterloo by plane Monday for San Francisco to ship to Viet Nam. He spent 13 months at Phu Bai near Hue and was home a month, then begins a five month extension at Phu Bai.
Mrs. Herman Mason is discharged and returns home Sunday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City after hospitalization and treatment.
Youths at Round Grove Golf and Country Club held a Q hole tournament Monday afternoon. Senior division saw Karl Sneed first with 38, Douglas Ruf likely second with 46, Marcellyn Curtis led the girls with 52. Junior division winners included Jack Wajewski first with 49 and Steve Wunsch second with 51, Jane Mehlan first with 74, Patty Rutz second with 78. Pee Wee boys 6th grade or under had Jim McLennan 69 and Bob Wegand 72, placing first and second.
Loran Duffield, 68, died Tuesday night at 10:15 at University Hospital in Iowa City. Survived by wife and three children James, Mrs. Wallace Sessler of Apling ton, and Mrs. Martha Starkey of Nora Springs. son Don died last fall. Rites pending with Reid's Funeral Chapel.
The fifth annual Butler County Summer School began in Allison on Monday June 12 with 64 students from seven Butler County high schools plus Hampton and Waverly-Shell Rock. Art and science classes were led by Mr. Bean Mr. Kohler Miss Reisdorff and instructors Timmer Johnson. The first week included design line value color chemistry and field trips to the Butler Center Prairie with Dr Lantz guiding plant studies and prairie history.
The Woman's Club sponsors free golf and tennis lessons for area youths. Golf for 6th 7th and 7th grade boys and girls meets Mondays at 4 00 pm with contact George Sam Sneed. Tennis for 7th through 12th grades starts Tuesday June 27 meeting at Perrin Park courts at 1 30 bring a racket and ball. No charge, six week program. Questions to Pamela Dralle.
Iowa division Living Memorials committee chairman reports new memorials from March 1, 1967 to June 1, 1987. Butler County names Minnie Green Floyd James Bamker Gladys Ditchen Vivian Kingery Lydia Kivell and Mrs Ralph Kluter. Mrs Andrew Reid Greene memorial chair man for Butler County.
Harold Thomas Walker son of Mr and Mrs Douglas Walker spends a month with his parents after a 13 month Viet Nam tour. He was stationed at Camp Nolloway Pleiku in the Central Highlands and will return for a six month extension. He was elected soldier of the month for January and to receive the bronze medal for gallantry in action.
Butler County Dairy Day activities center in Parkersburg on Saturday June 24 with a Dairy Princess Contest 15 entries and a noon luncheon by the Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce. The 1 pm program includes a tractor pull and kids events at the Elementary School grounds, followed by a 6:30 pm parade and program with Iowa Secretary of Agriculture L B Liddy and the coronation of the 1967 Dairy Princess. Milk dairy products will be available in a free bar.
A record number of 174 law graduates passed the Iowa State Bar spring examination at the University of Iowa. Roger Nixt of Greene earned the law degree there and was among those admitted. Those sworn in, Friday by Chief Justice T G Garfield, took part in a luncheon at Iowa Memorial Union.
Rev and Mrs George S Knutson plan a train trip Friday from St Paul to Washington. Mrs Knutson will visit her sister Laura Hovis in Parker Washington while Rev Knutson joins brother Carl to Seattle for the thirty sixth annual conference of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches.
Parents of San Airman Second Class and Mrs John Backer of Puyallup Washington announce the birth of a son on Thursday June 15 weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces. He is named John Keith. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Douglas Walker and Mr and Mrs John Backer of Greene.
A softball tournament will be held in Greene with four games at noon and 1:15 PM on July 4. Mason City Hamm's faces Sheffield, Buttertop of Mason City meets Cresco, Greene plays Nashua, and Carpet Line of Cedar Rapids meets Northwestern of Mason City. Semifinals at 6:00 and 7:15, finals at 8:30, fireworks to conclude.
Robert Curtis, the local Test master, announces outgoing mail will be dispatched daily at 12:05 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. The 9:00 a.m. dispatch time has been eliminated.
Richard Knight son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Knight and Theresa Rutz daughter of Mr and Mrs Florian Rutz attended Iowa State University orientation meetings on campus last week. Richard enters the College of Sciences and Humanities and Theresa joins the College of Engineering.
Cindy Weinberg the ten year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Vern Weinberg returned home after five days of extensive treatment and tests at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.

Cpl Ronald E Stewart and his wife and son Grant visit the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stewart. Cpl Stewart will depart for Camp Pendleton California for a month's training before heading to Danang Viet Nam.
