Parents and guardians urged to thank local leaders like Jerry Eimers for hours with PeWee and Babe Ruthers. A tongue in cheek note laments sports corruption and promotes a family friendly Waterhawks performance in Greene for the Fourth of July.
Applications to register motorboats under the Iowa law will be available June 30. Earlier reports said June 19. All boats propelled in Iowa waters must be registered and display the assigned numbers on the bow. Obtain forms from County Recorders, Conservation Officers, or the State Conservation Commission, East 7th and Court Des Moines Iowa.

The Iowa District of The American Lutheran Church holds its first annual convention June 21 29 in Decorah Iowa aligned with Luther College centennial celebrations. About 800 delegates from 395 congregations attend with St Peters Greene and St Pauls Marble Rock represented. Dr H W Siefkes reports on the districts first year operations since the 1961 merger of three synods.
Two Mason City area teachers Miss Rachel Schreckengost and Mrs. Ralph Livingston, both 42, were killed in a Tuesday morning crash one-quarter mile south of Roseville when their car was struck broadside by a northbound semi-truck driven by Donald L. Coleman 24, of New Hopkins Missouri. Sheriff L L Lane said the car swerved while passing, lost control, and forced into the truck. Mrs Swaroff escaped injury as her car had only scratches. The wreck left Miss Schreckengost’s vehicle demolished and Mrs Livingston trapped.
Judge Henry N Graven and family hosted the sixteenth annual reunion for former law clerks and guests. Participants enjoyed golf, motor boat rides, and games, with a Saturday dinner at Round Grove Golf and Country Club and a Sunday picnic at the Graven residence. The event marked Judge Graven’s retirement from the Federal Bench. Attendees included numerous law clerks from cities such as Dubuque Waterloo Fort Dodge Des Moines Ottumwa Cedar Rapids Burlington Wichita Falls and Kansas City plus court officers and staff from the District Attorney Marshal and probation offices and the referee.
The second week of the summer park program, themed Our Country, features crafts like Indian pilgrim figures Washington and Lincoln, gimp weaving, hot pads and plant holders at a free craft table. Attendance averaged 51 last week with 96 enrolled. games include shuffleboard tennis badminton tetherball horseshoe bowling and croquet. tournaments underway in several games.
Country club plans July 4 events including a noon pot luck dinner with Calvin Kelly Richard Wagoner and Gerald Stephenson as committee. Mixed Two Ball Foursome golf tournament follows dinner and course closes to non members. Fireworks display and dance 9 pm to 1 am with Top Hatters Orchestra.
The Greene local Little League opened Tuesday June 20 with the Yankees beating the Indians 13 to 2 and the Pirates defeating the Braves 9 to 8. Douglas Ruffridge hit two first inning homers and another hit in the fourth. Stuntz and Gabe went 3 for 4 for the Yankees. Leavens 1 for 2. Ruffridge was the winning pitcher. Nettleton charged with the loss. Pirates bats featured Barth Shultz Landers and Johnson. Barth pitched. Braves leaders included Enners Wilhem Johnson Wiffley Litterer and Drakle. Willey was the loser.
A representative from the Social Security Administration District office in Waterloo will be in Allison at the County House on July 21 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. The agent will help with applications for federal old age survivors and disability benefits, duplicate Social Security numbers, and employee identification numbers. People may also visit the Waterloo office in Room 702 of the Blue Hawk Building, at W. 4th and Commercial Streets, or call Adams 4-1554.
The Most Rev Paul Leonard Hagarty bishop of Nassau Bahamas observed the silver jubilee of his priestly ordination with a Solemn Pontifical Mass at St Marys Church. He was ordained at St Johns Abbey Collegeville Minnesota on June 6 1936 and became Bishop of Nassau in 1950. An assisting Bishop was from the parish and Archbishop Leo Binz presided at the Mass. A 100 oclock luncheon followed for family and visiting bishops. An earlier jubilee observance took place June 20 at Collegeville Minnesota with Mass at Saint Johns College and a college luncheon.
A county wide fitting and showing demonstration will be held Friday evening June 30 at 8 00 p m at the county fairgrounds in Allison. The event covers beef dairy sheep and swine with tips on fitting for the show ring and guidance on rules and showing methods. It is a cooperative effort of the Butler County Agricultural Committee including the Soil Conservation Service the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Office all Vocational Agriculture Instructors in Butler County and the County Extension Office. All 4 H and FFA livestock exhibitors are urged to attend.
Owners of all boats on public waters must equip every passenger with a life preserver. Applies to commercial and rental boats under new Iowa boating laws summarized in pamphlets from Conservation Officers or State Conservation Commission Des Moines. Devices, registration of motorized boats, and July 4 1961 effective date highlighted.

A large Greene crowd is expected next Tuesday July 4 to watch the Waterloo Waterhawks water show above the dam starting at 4:00 p.m. The two hour program features acrobatics in boats, flag acts, water ballet, pyramids, jumps and a jumping boats finale. Sponsored by the Greene Commercial Club, the non profit group of over 100 families will charge only for equipment use.
George A Sam Sneed of Greene Iowa will attend the Lutheran Mutual Life Insurance Award Convention at the Grand Hotel Mackinac Island Michigan from July 2 to 6. He qualified for the convention through his 1960 company record. Only 136 of more than 400 agents were invited. Ars Sneed will accompany her husband.
Last weeks bowling results show standings across Wednesday Mixed leagues and Thursday Young Men with high scores listed. Notable performances include Barbara Stock 508 in mixed play and Duane Mather 182 plus Bob Teeple 460 in the Friday lineup. Charles Starkweather posted 532 in early events and Alma Heckman reached 426 in another set.
Greene and Marble Rock sit tied for first after Greene’s 5 3 defeat by Marble Rock and Babe Ruthers 15 3 win over Marble Rock. Nora Springs beat by Little Leaguers 13 3 as Greene bats spark 13 runs. Greene head to Rudd next Thursday with no game Monday.
Greene Cub Pack No 26 will attend an all day Butler District Cub-O-Rama on Sunday July 2 meeting at Drales Corner at 8 15 am. A full day of events is planned and boys eight by November 1 may join with their dads encouraged to attend at Marble Rock conservation site.
The Junior Legion baseball nine lost two games in the past week. At Mason City Saturday night the team fell 5 to 0 while a Sunday afternoon game extended to 8 innings with Greene pitching and Myers and Marsh sharing duties. Both winning squads consisted of area selected players and the local team remained active on the weekend slate.
