Mrs. Ben Weyand and Christy Jean Weyand with Joe arrive in Chula Vista to spend a month with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Dell Curtis and other relatives.
The Greene local kids league opened Tuesday June 19 with 76 boys in 4 teams. First game at 6 45. To play a boy must be 8 or in 6th grade. Yankees beat Indians 9 6 behind pitching by Trees and McRoberts. Dodgers edged Giants 6 5 with Eimers Johnson sharing pitching and Nettleton catching. Nettleton hit a triple. Next Tuesday July 3 the Yankees meet the Giants at 6 45 and the Dodgers face the Indians at 8 00.
Mr and Mrs Francis Wilson departed Elwood New Jersey to Greene for a two week stay visiting Mrs Wilsons brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Clyde Stuntz The Stuntzs parents Mr and Mrs Guy Newcomer from Lincoln Nebraska arrived Monday and will also spend two weeks at the Stuntz home
Forty four girls from Greene and Clarksville participate in the Brownie and Girl Scout Day Camp at Henry Woods State Park Clarksville from June 25 to 29. A closing ceremony and tea are scheduled Friday at 2:00 PM, with all mothers invited.
Miss Diane Murphy announces enrollment at the summer playground under the Women's Club auspices has reached 126. Mrs John Hamilton and Mrs John Van Eschen lead the free Indian theme table with totem poles drums bead work and loom weaving. Ann Curtis supervises rexlace and space murals and Mary Lou Murphy led replace work. Tomorrow June 28 is Indian Pow Wow day with costumes and a hot dog and bun wiener roast and awards for best dress. Tournament week features shuffleboard tether ball and quoits with a double horseshoe win by Doug Wiley and Jack Majewski on Monday.
Anne and Elizabeth Hagarty returned to their Greene home on Tuesday June 19 after visiting their brother Frank Hagarty and family in Tyndall South Dakota.
High scores include Loretta Miller 168, Darlene Kiehn 167 and 211, Alma Heckman 425, Gertie Marsh 168 and 173, Marion Belknap 166, Charles Starkweather 553, Glen Shaffer 210 and 536, Carroll Schroeder 524. Teams listed with partial scores and participant initials.
Explorer Scouts led by Bob Shultz cleaned the Perrin Park swimming area on June 18 and 25. They raked sand and removed stones and glass to protect swimmers.
Greene loses 6 to 5 at Tripoli as Barth drives in two runs and New-ton swipes home. Nolte and Klunder's two RBI triple highlight Greene’s second inning. Nolte starts for Greene, Barcheing goes distance for Tripoli. Merchants head to Waterloo Sunday and host Allison Wednesday at 2:30.
Edward Tolliver 48 of Poca hontas died suddenly Tuesday morning of a heart attack while vacationing with his wife and daughter in Alexander Minnesota. He is survived by his wife two daughters Donna Blanchard of Charles City and Portia Fish of Mason City and one granddaughter. Funeral services are tentatively set for Friday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Greene. Williams Mortuary has charge of arrangements.
Jack D. Shultz departed Tuesday morning for Des Moines to undergo a medical checkup at the Veterans Hospital.
The Little Leaguers earned their 6th win by routing the Marble Rock Cubs 9 to 3 as Parsons and Nettleton combined for the victory and Jorges and Nettleton collected three hits each. The Babe Ruth squad beat Marble Rock 2 to 0 in a pitcher’s duel with Clapham fanning 12 and a late triple by Steve Clapham. Greene defeated Nora Springs Eagles 10 to 1 behind strong hitting by Stuntz and Nettleton and solid defense. The Babe Ruth then needed extra innings to beat Nora Springs 4 to 1, Clapham and Mathers each registering 16 strikeouts. Greene hosts Rudd Thursday then St Ansgar Monday as Rudd leads Babe Ruth standings. Greene aims to tie for first with a win.
Rev Harold Miller and his wife Muriel moved into the Greene parsonage as he was appointed to serve the local Methodist Church. The Miller family, from Radcliffe via Jackson Michigan and Garrett Theological Seminary Evans ton, plus daughter Sue, 14, reflect a longtime clerical career with prior postings in Delhi and Altoona Colesburg.
Mr and Mrs Donald Rover and family attended the ordination service of Mrs Rover s brother Henry Flessner at Rockford on Sunday evening.
The Explorer Scouts will hold a meeting on Monday night July 2 at 7 30 at the home of Leonard Nichol. All Explorers are urged to attend.
Genevieve du Jonchay will depart Chicago Saturday at 6 30 pm by jet to Paris where she will spend weeks visiting family. Her plane arrives Paris 9 35 Sunday morning. She will see husband Christian daughter Louise and Andre Besancon and three grandchildren Thierry Catherine Phillipe Besancon. This is her first visit home in thirteen years. She will accompany Mr and Mrs Paul E Shafer back to Chicago on Friday.
July 4 events at Round Grove Golf and Country Club include a noon pot luck dinner chaired by Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Poole followed by the Mixed Two-Ball Foursome tournament. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Molzschuh and son Dale returned to Klickitat Washington after a two week visit with her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Behnke in Greene and his parents Mr and Mrs Oscar Holzschuh in Clarksville.
Butler County 4 H members aged 12 to 14 will attend County Camp at the State 4 H Camp from July 1 to 4. Activities include firecraft tieing insect zoo nature designs archery volleyball softball canoeing swimming trampol ine and badminton with hiking flag raising vesper services. Leaders listed among attendees include Jean Van Dyke Nancy Kaiser Ida Janssen Bill Cordes Mike Jewell and others with local extension staff Kay A Connell Grace Benjegerdes and C Dean Johnson also attending.
The Junior Legion team defeated Thornton 6 to 1 on Friday with Marsh pitching three hits allowed and both Marsh and Boomgarden hitting triples for Greene. In the second game Greene’s squad beat LaPorte City 3 to 0 as Marsh fanned 18 and Earldean Buttier and Kenneth Greene added key hits. Greene hosts Sheffield today, then plays in the Legion Tournament at State Center next Monday.
Mr and Mrs Ray Harrison and their son from Chambersburg Pennsylvania recently visited the Leslie Barnhart home. A cooperative dinner was hosted at Merlyn Parks home on Sunday in their honor with Walter Barnhart of Waterloo and several families from Manchester Nora Springs and other area present. Mrs Harrison is a niece of Walter and Leslie Barnhart.
Mr and Mrs bart xnutfridge and Mr and Mrs William Fisher vacationed in Wisconsin Minnesota and Canada last week. They traveled through Wisconsin to Superior and then Duluth Minnesota, then the North Shore Drive to Grand Marais and on to Ontario Canada a scenic drive.
The Greene Commercial Club outlines July 4 activities with 9:00 a.m foot races at the athletic field, 2:30 p.m. baseball between Greene Merchants and Allison, and an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display. Mrs. James Drake lists Red Cross swimming class requirements from Beginner to Senior Lifesaving, with age eligibility from 12 to 16 for Junior Lifesaving and 16 plus for Senior Lifesaving.
A gas war involving major companies has spread to Greene, causing a major price reduction. The dip in price stems from competition among large gas firms, not local station disagreements, and residents are expected to benefit soon.
The Melodyaires, a vocal trio from Omaha Baptist Bible College, will give a sacred concert at Calvary Baptist Church in Greene on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. The program includes Christian songs and testimony. The public is invited to attend.
Elsie Henrietta Witt Litterer born April 30 1902 in Fremont Township Butler County died June 20 at 60.1 time she lived on multiple Butler County farms with husband Theophil B. Litterer and raised thirteen children. Surviving are eight sons four daughters twenty two grandchildren two siblings and two uncles. Funeral services were at Immanuel United Church of Christ with interment at St Johns United Church of Christ Cemetery Fremont Township north of Clarksville.
Mr and Mrs Larry Dovey and their family of Banning California will depart Thursday after a ten day stay at the home of Mrs Doveys parents Mr and Mrs Clarence Shultz and with other relatives.
Frederick Alfred Lampman was stillborn at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Graveside services were held Friday at 10:00 at the Wilmar cemetery with Rev. E T Busch of St. John's Lutheran Church officiating. Williams Mortuary arranged. Surviving with the parents is the maternal grandmother Mrs Bessie Bammann of Greene.
The official canvass shows the judicial amendment to remove judges from partisan politics won 158 279 affirmative to 118 215 negative votes, 357 per cent of the total 276 494 cast. Dr Francis Kutish of Iowa State says farm size rises but under 3 per cent exceed 500 acres, with no sign of factory farming trends in Iowa.
