Charles Ray and family of Springfield Illinois will move to Greene as he joins M. Sperry in the insurance business starting July 1. He is son of Dick Ray, a Greene High School graduate, married to Darlene Dix, and father of four daughters. He previously served as assistant treasurer and head of IBM and Accounting at Horace Mann Insurance in Springfield for four years. The firm becomes Sperry Ray, The Insurance Office with Helen Witwer continuing as secretary. The Rays have rented the Roscoe Wharton home in Greene.
The bridge over the Shell Rock River in Greene reopened Saturday afternoon after a month of closure for extensive repairs. New ties and asphalt squares were installed, and traffic is moving again while crews finish understructure work and complete the walkway.
The Greene Merchants defeated the Waterloo Elks 13 to 7 on Sunday afternoon with Nolte pitching six innings and Sutton finishing. Klunder hit a three run homer for Waterloo while Nolte added two triples. Six Greene players had two or more hits and all recorded at least one. Cedar Valley League standings show Fredericksburg and Greene tied at 21, Readlyn 21, Tripoli 20, Janesville 10, Waterloo 3. Greene visits Allison Wednesday at 2:30 and hosts Fredericksburg next Sunday at 8:15.

Sheffield posted two runs in the seventh to beat the local Junior Legion 7 to 6 on Wednesday. Greene’s Myers fanned twelve Sheffield batters, while Slagle pitched for the winners. Barth and Myers each had two hits for Greene. The Junior Legion Team then played State Center at State Center on Tuesday evening, July 3.
The third week of the Woman's Club recreation program began with an animal theme. Pet day on Thursday July 5th invites children to bring pets and win prizes. Enrollment is 134 with 56 average daily attendance.
The 106th Butler County Fair opens in Allison on August 2 and runs through August 5 with judging beginning August 3. Highlights include the saddle horse show, Appaloosa event, nine classes per show, a Thursday gates opening, Friday Children’s day with discounted rides, the Tournament of Thrills on Sunday, and over 750 in purses for horse and pony races. Entry day is August 8, and 4-H livestock auction occurs August 6 at 10:00 AM.

The Iowa Pony Racing Association will hold harness and chariot races at the Osage fairgrounds on Sunday July 8 starting at 1:00 PM. Cecil Harris, the association president, said seven trotting and four chariot races are planned with entrants including Dale Bruns Greene Russell Schoeneman Glenn Allan Darwin Wabbena Allison and Justin Winke Shells Rock for chariot entries. Trotting entrants include Cecil Harris Greene and Bill Miller Allison.
Due to many requests a pictorial program titled Our Boys Past and Present will be shown again at the Calvary Baptist Church in Greene on Monday July 9 at 8 p.m. About 120 slides from past and present photos will be shown with narration by tape. The public is invited.
Teen Hop will be held at the Country Club on Friday evening July 13 from 8 to 11 o'clock. Bill Strike of the Waverly Radio Station will provide music.
Albert Mahnke reported the death of Harry I. Sebert 62 of Glen Ellyn Illinois a former Greene resident. Funeral services were held in Glen Ellyn on June 2. Survivors include wife Corine two daughters Kay B Sebert of Brazil and Neva Ward Wallace of Pasadena California two brothers two sisters and three grandchildren.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosts the City Golf Tournament with first round results. Chuck Teeple beat Don Devies. R. H. Brekke downed Dr. Dr. Weires. Dale Willey defeated Harry O Harrow. Jim Mead beat Tom Green. Herman Stubbe defeated Jim Drake. Vern Rofttler bested Jack Batty. Stan Roose over Martin Senne. M Ralph Marsh beat Pete Sinram. Bob Curtis edged Carl Heyenga. Clyde Stuntz beat Dr Drees. Larry Fimnell over Charles Nichol. Al Kalt over E W Shaw. Bob Mead defeated Eldin Reisetter. Sam Sneed over B N Huber. Dr Wentworth beat Charles Mosher.
The Yankees beat the Dodgers 10 to 9 in an extra inning local league game on Tuesday June 26. Mark Graven drove in Todd Woodley with the decisive run in the 6th inning as Douglas Trees and Gary Johnson pitched all nine. Trees also homered for the Yankees. The Giants defeated the Indians 8 to 0 behind Wendy Stuntz on the mound and Doug Wiley homering for the Giants in the 4th. The Indians were shut out and standings follow.
Dr and Mrs Everett Rogers of Columbus Ohio adopted a baby boy on June 4. The child, born March 2 1962, has been named David Michael. Mrs Rogers is the daughter of Mr and Mrs B N Needham of Greene.
Vernon Kyhl earns unanimous support at Butler County Republican gathering in Allison as the top candidate for the Tri-County State Senate seat. Delegates selected from Albion Beaver Bene zette Coldwater Dayton Jackson Madison Monroe Pittsford Ripley Shell Rock Washington West Point and other townships will field delegates to the July convention. Williams listed as construction worker injured after a 50 foot fall at Bristow Elevator site. He was hospitalized in Waterloo with a concussion.
The Greene Recorder will be closed from July 16 to July 23 for staff vacation. Two papers will print the week of July 9 with regular issue July 11 and next week's issue July 13. The issue will mail July 18. Ad buyers and news contributors are urged to submit copy by July 13 morning.
Mrs Glen Skillen injured three fingers of her left hand last Wednesday when she caught it in a pulley at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Vern Schoolcraft in Fredericksburg.
Mr and Mrs Walter Frank of Humboldt welcomed a son born Saturday June 30 in a Fort Dodge hospital. The baby weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces. Mrs Frank is the former Jean Bartels, daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar Bartels.
Pastor I J Deines announces Luther College Noblemen Quartet from Decorah will give a sacred music concert at 8:00 pm on Thursday July 19 as part of a 1962 tour across nine states from the Dakotas to Ohio. Members Roi Brende Michael Palm Paul Tobinson and Robert Solberg headline with works by Schnaabel Palestrina Hassler LaForge Willan and spirituals. A free will offering will defray tour expenses.
Butler Counts Mutual Insurance Association of New Hartford was one of 19 farm mutuals recognized for no increase in business during 1961 as Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company of Grinnell closed its 54th annual meeting in Gunnell Wednesday. Butler County Mutual was cited for adding insurance totaling 3,087,712 dollars during 1961 to rank eighth in largest dollar gain among member farm mutuals in Iowa.
William Astor returned home Monday afternoon from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after a sixteen day stay following surgery.
