The Mason City community is praised for its handling of the Band Festival which brings worldwide recognition to the town. The editorial lauds collective effort, noting that civic unity enables notable accomplishments when citizens work together.
The Iowa District American Lutheran Church holds its second annual convention at Wartburg College in Waverly from Monday to Wednesday next week. A F Lindell was elected delegate and John Dobel an alternate at St Peters Congregation’s annual meeting. Rev St Deines represents both St Peters and St Pauls with the delegates. the 7:45 mass opening session and all convention sessions occur at the college chapel.
Mr and Mrs Ira Thomas announce that their daughters Dorothy and Marjorie Thomas have arrived safely in Homer Alaska on June 13 after leaving Greene. They resume duties at the Alaska Christian Home near Homer for a three year term following a one year furlough.
Greene Mississippi report on a group from Coe College and Oberlin College who say they were arrested without cause while visiting segregated Mississippi. A white attorney and four students were detained for about 20 hours after leaving a Negro church meeting.
Jane Voigts of Butler County attended the State 4-H Conservation Camp near Madrid this past week. She trained as a delegate in leadership citizenship counseling and camping skills with emphasis on wildlife and soil conservation. She will serve as a counselor at County Camp from July 1 to 4 alongside extension staff.
Greene Little Leaguers beat Marble Rock 12 to 4 on June 12 as Nettleton, Kock and Parsons shared pitching. Wunsch hit a two run homer and Nettleton and Leavens added doubles in a 10 hit attack. The Ramblers then defeated St Ansgar 3 to 0 behind Parsons and Nettleton.
Henry Schmidt of Greene learned last Friday of the death of his brother Carl Schmidt age 60 in Moline Michigan. A former Greene resident he leaves a wife, an son Harold, and a daughter Mrs Marvin Lynema of Moline Michigan and another daughter Mrs Carl Myers of Grandville Michigan.
Iowa Highway Patrolman James Jonker, 36, Parkersburg, remained hospitalized in Waterloo after a Friday night collision with Kenneth Kuhn, 49, of Shell Rock on Highway 3 near Shell Rock. Jonker sustained a fractured rib and facial injuries. Kuhn was treated and released after minor cuts and abrasions.
A Commercial Club poll favors Saturday night shopping by 226 to 80 but is inconclusive due to 508 unanswered questionnaires and 106 with no preference. The survey aims to guide 1963 store hours, with current plans keeping 5:30 weekday closing and 9:00 p.m. Saturday hours, and a temporary 6:00 p.m. Saturday close in January February and March.
William Astor was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for surgery this morning. The note records a Wednesday admission and procedure.
Lieutenant Commander Mark P Frudden USN is slated for a Greene visit over the weekend of June 23 at his parents home. He and his wife Judy and their two sons Scott and Brian travel to California from the east coast. Frudden studied at the Naval War College and will serve as Executive Officer aboard the destroyer USS Wilkinson at Long Beach. He is a 1950 US Naval Academy graduate with twelve years of service including commands aboard the USS Quapaw and leadership roles at Bremerton and Washington DC.
Irene Thompson sustained a concussion after falling down steps outside her home last Wednesday morning. She is confined to bed for a couple of weeks as she recovers.
Sister M Magdalene of St Bernardine died June 8 at the Convent of the Good Shepherd in St Louis Missouri. A Greene and Roseville native she was about 86. She belonged to the Sisterhood for 52 years and is survived by one brother Chris Frascht of Charles City and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in St Louis.
J P Knight's Court Paul Wunsch faced a charge of prohibiting passing with a 320.00 fine and 4.00 costs. J P Moffett's Court Darwin Lester Stock of Greene charged with disturbing the peace carrying 825.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Jerry Ronald Keller of Monroe cited for speeding with 25.00 fine. Dale E Hesalrvoad charged with having an open cut out yielding 5.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Eloise O'Brien cited for expired license with 10.00 fine and 4.00 costs.
Red Cross swimming registrations set for Perrin Park at 1 30 p m on Thursday June 21 and Friday June 22. Children must be seven years old. Call Mrs James Drake if unable to register. Lessons begin July 16 at Parkersburg Pool and run Mondays and Wednesdays to August 13. Junior lifesaving starts July 13 and runs to August 11. Transportation required for students. Adults to supervise a bus route should contact Mrs James Drake.
Mrs Jerry Wagner underwent surgery Tuesday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
The Thursday evening Mixed League saw G and E beat 14 to 12, Sloppy S's 11 13, K and M 13, Wood'naps 13, GHS 12. High scores included Galen Miller 223, Ralph Marsh 201, Sam Sneed 228, Melin Kollman 203, and Loretta Miller 426.
The Woman's Club summer recreation program for children started in Perrin Park with about 88 enrolled. Craft activities include robot making from tin cans, plaster figurine painting, and looper weaving led by Mary Lou and JoAnn Murphy Carolyn Kehoe Sue Williams Marcelo Murphy Jolene Murphy and Terri Rutz. An Indian theme is planned for next week and a Pow Wow is set for Thursday, June 28. The bandstand was enclosed last year to permit activities in bad weather.
May savings bonds sales in Butler county totaled 51200, lifting the five month sum to 833525 for 56 percent of its Freedom Bond Drive quota. County chairman John McWhirter of Allison urged all citizens to buy extra savings bonds before the drive ends June 30, calling it a way to fight communist aggression.
The Dorothy's Beauty Shop bowling team captured the state Class B tournament in Dubuque. They posted a 2455 scratch team series and earned medals and prize money for first place. Individual scores included Evelyn Behnke 178 459, Loretta Miller 441, Gertie Marsh 173 496, Barbara Stock 184 200 522, Dorothy Fischer 191 178 537.
Hans Nielsen 86 died Monday noon at his home after a several months illness. Born April 9, 1876 in Denmark, he married Christina Lindberg on April 15, 1909. Survived by wife Christina two sons Harold Nielsen Greene Maurice Nielsen Dike one daughter Julia Lee Littleton Colorado eight grandchildren one half brother George Fetersen Cedar Falls one sister Mrs Hans Christiansen. Funeral at 2:00 PM today at Fredsville Lutheran Church near Dike.
The Junior Legion baseball team beat Allison 11 to 3 on Friday. Doug Marsh earned the win, allowing 3 hits while striking out 20. Buttner and Marsh each had 3 hits. Marsh added two doubles and a triple, Butter a triple and two singles. Next games: Thornton on June 22, LePorte City June 25, Sheffield June 27, all in Greene.
Mr. and Mrs. Verle Barth and John returned home Sunday from a two week vacation in the West. They visited relatives in Seattle at the World's Fair, Vancouver Washington, and Wishram Oregon. They traveled home via Salt Lake City Utah.
Vernon H. Kyle of Parkersburg launches Republican bid to fill the vacancy caused by Senator J Kendal Lynes death. He has long party ties, has chaired Butler County GOP, owned a Chevrolet Buick agency, farm implements dealer, and co owned a 320 acre Albion Township farm. He served on the Parkersburg School Board since 1938, led local business groups, and advocates reconfirming the Shaft Bill and property tax relief. He is 53, with wife Alice and five children.
Mrs. Howard Burroughs learned that Mrs. Roger Freet has been hospitalized in California with tuberculosis for six weeks. She will undergo three to six months of treatment. The Freets have two daughters, Diane and Susie, and plan to finish a new home in July. Mr. Freet, once a football coach at Greene and Hampton, moved with his family to Reedley, California. Their Fresno address is 435 So Cedar.
Thirty six Butler County 4-H youths attend three day District Camp at Clear Lake with leaders Mrs C. B. Kaiser Greene and Mrs Ted DeBerg Bristow. Camp aims to build friendships citizenship and wholesome fun with planned programs.
Capitol news reports chagrined Towa legislators that Supreme and District Court judges may soon receive higher salaries after a constitutional amendment changed how judges are selected and allowed raises mid term. Current funds fall short, needing about 150000 until January, while district judges see top pay at 14000. Also notes a statewide plan for public community colleges via 16 regional districts replacing 99 county boards.
Calvary Baptist Church in Greene hosts a Friday June 22 8 p m program titled Our Boys Past And Present. A pictorial presentation honors fathers with a tape narrated slide show of 120 images showing men and boys in various ages poses and occupations. Open to the public with a home talent cast.
The Green Merchants game versus Janesville was rained out last Sunday. Next Sunday they travel to Tripoli and on Sunday July 1 they will play at Waterloo. On July 4 they host Allison.
