The piece argues the press in the United States enjoys strong protections as shown by the Profumo affair in Britain. David Graven son of Judge Henry Graven and Mrs. Graven of Greene will begin a professorship at the University of Minnesota Law School next September. He and his family live in Albert Lea where he practices law. He previously ran unsuccessfully for U S Representative in 1962.
Mrs Bert Hagarty of South Main Street vacationed in the East visiting her sons Joe Hagarty in Arlington Virginia and Vincent Hagarty in Ashville North Carolina and her daughter Mrs Jim Fiore in Westminster Maryland. She was joined by her son Bishop Paul Leonard Hagarty of Nassau Bahamas.
The Butler County Civil Defense office reports all county towns have adopted resolutions to form a Civil Defense Agency and join the Butler County Municipal Civil Defense Board. The New Hartford Elevator obtained a Public Fallout Shelter License with a protection factor of 40+ and capacity for 115 persons. The county offices are now in the Court House basement, previously Social Welfare, with a new mailing address Box 117 Allison IA 50602.
A Social Security Administration district office representative will be in Allison Iowa at the Court House on July 3, 17, and 31 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Persons may also call the Waterloo district office in room 702 of the Black Hawk Building at 234 1554 for information.
Dianne DeBerg of Bristow, 18 and a Greene Community School graduate, was crowned the 1963 Butler County Dairy Princess at Dairy Day in Parkersburg after 13 candidates competed. Runnerup was Nancy Bergman of New Hartford. The ceremony, led by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture L B Liddy, drew about 2,500 attendees and precedes the state contest in Boone in August.
Jim Marshall of Greene driving car number 59 won the special event at Nashua races Saturday. He topped nine competitors, placing third in the second heat and feature, and second in the B Semi Main. Marvin Moser of Greene finished sixth in the feature.
A Teen Hop will be held at the Country Club on Friday evening June 28 from 8 to 11 30. Youth Center rules apply and all junior and senior high students may attend. Bernie Starr of Fort Dodge will be the disc jockey with chaperones Herman Stubbe Jim Schroeder Elmer Bramer Clyde Stuntz and Norman Watsloh.
Fine of ten dollars and four dollars in costs imposed on Court Earl KR. Ruffridge of Greene and J. P. Moffett for speeding. Both defendants settled the charges with payment to the court.
Janesville defeated Greene 5 to 4 as Slagle struck out nine and Strott earned the win with five strikeouts. Greene took an early 1-0 lead via Newton and Clapham, while Janesville answered with four in the third and one in the fifth. Next Sunday the Merchants travel to Fredericksburg.
Mrs. Leora Williamson reports her son Larry Williamson H M 3c has left Norfolk Virginia aboard the aircraft carrier USS Independence and is now in Cuba for several months of duty arriving there for a period of assignment.
Round Grove Camp hosted the annual Girl Scout Day Camp attracting 87 scouts from Clarksville Greene and Allison. Units wore bright red bandanas with themes as mothers watched a Friday program. Camp activities included crafts music nature study and outdoor cooking led by unit leaders and assistants from the three towns.
Last week the park group made pictures with straws and a rabbit, topped egg cartons, and expressive painting with Mrs. Robert Barth. This week’s theme A Trip to the Seashore features foam ball tables, shell decor, mosaic fish from metal paper, sea shell display, sailboats from bottles, and dancing previews.
The third district baseball tournament runs Friday through Monday at Waterloo Municipal. Greene faces Tama-Toledo Friday 8:30 pm, winner plays Radcliffe Sunday 2:30 pm. Traer meets Waterloo Friday 6:00 pm, winner faces State Center Sunday 7:30 pm. final Monday 7:30 pm. Greene players depart Enc0l Friday 6:30 pm.
Larry Raxmord 18 Greene and Ethmer H Sisley 44 Tural Canton were among three men who escaped the Chickasaw County jail in New Hampton on June 8. Judge Kenneth Cordes sentenced Cor des 28 Ba for breaking and entering to 10 years plus car theft one year for the jail breach. Sisley received 7 years in Fort Madison for parole violation and 10 years for car theft plus a year for the jail break. Raymond, jailed on related charges, awaits court-appointed attorney designation and faces additional terms.
Postal officials announce that starting July 1 the five digit ZIP Code system begins in Iowa. Greene uses 50636 for all mail, speeding deliveries and reducing mis sent items. ZIP codes streamline sorting by code only, potentially saving up to 24 hours in delivery.
Steven Rottler son of Mr and Mrs Vern Rottler Greene has been awarded a Rice Estate Advanced Curriculum Scholarship worth $400 at Iowa State University Ames where he is a junior in farm operation He must maintain a 4 0 GPA and take additional mathematics statistics and physics He is also a varsity track squad member on campus
New Wilmar residents Rev E T Busch and wife welcome a son born Monday June 17 at Mercy Hospital Waverly weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces named David Alan. Wayne Riehle and wife of Tinley Park Illinois announce a daughter born Thursday June 20 weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces named Margaret Ann. Mrs Richie is the former Myrna Ramker of Greene.
Mrs Minnie Heuer spent Monday through Friday in Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City for treatment. Mr and Mrs D H Ellis returned home Friday from Rochester Minnesota where Mr Ellis was a patient at Methodist Hospital after major surgery. Dale Johnson returned home Saturday from Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City.
The AIAQUEZ Lodge of the Order of the Arrow awarded the Vigil Honor to six individuals during a campfire program at Winnebago Scout Reservation. Ken Sutton's Junior Legion beat St Ansgar 8 to 1 as Marvin Woodley and Greene hitters led the offense. Greene also defeated Sheffield 6 to 1 with Mark Ott pitching a complete game, as Spratt Barth and Reiners delivered key hits and Sheffield managed one run.
In Hospital Max Hites, 18 year old son of Mrs. Don Hites, is recovering satisfactorily at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth Minnesota from injuries suffered in a trucking accident in Duluth on June 12.
Army Pvt. James A. Brinkman, son of Mrs. Rosa M. Brinkman of Greene, was assigned to the 12th Artillery at Fort Sill Oklahoma on June 8. A Greene Community High School graduate, Brinkman entered the Army in January 1963 and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri. A dance will be held at the Country Club on Wednesday July 3, with committee members named James Mead Harry Green Robert Curtis Keith Dralle and Don McGee.
The Little Leaguers and Babe Ruth teams beat Marble Rock 8 to 6 and 1 to 0 as pitchers Johnson Stuntz and Gabe led a win. Ramblers matched with 8 runs on 11 hits off Chambers Asmoussen. Rock, Hagarty and Dave Rock key plays.

Allison booster Joan McWhirter urges residents to buy bonds before July 4 Independence Day. Statewide Iowa May sales reach 8956114 with five month total 35086497 or 47 percent of quota, reflecting a 3 million rise from 1962.
The State Conservation Commission accepted a giant walleye as a record. Fred Sufier of Waverly caught a 36.5 inch walleye of 13 1/2 pounds in the Cedar River near Waverly on May 25 using artificial bait. The commission notes no entries yet for other species. the first legal fish in each species will set a record.
