Jim Marshall earned three places at the Stock Car Races in Nashua on Saturday evening. He won the B Semi Main, finished second in the 2nd heat, and placed fourth in the Feature Event.
In July the Salvation Army plans its annual drive across Butler County with two exceptions Clarksville and Parkersburg joining the Community Chest. John Alexander leads canvassing in other towns with no letters mailed this year. Funds partly stay with local committee for urgent needs. The organization operates Service Units in 650 Iowa communities offering glasses hot meals clothing shoes and hearing aids. It also funds groceries fuel and clothing for needy families and runs state programs for unwed mothers prison services summer camping and services for the blind deaf and elderly.
The Greene Fire Department was dispatched at 6 45 a m Tuesday to extinguish a blaze in a Ford Panel owned by Walter Hites about two miles north of Greene. The vehicle was burned beyond repair.

Greene defeats Fredericksburg 6 to 1 as Slagle and teammates spark offense with timely hits. Bob Shultz drives in Greene’s first run in third, key two base hits by Slagle and Harry Barth in fourth, and two runs in the ninth. Fredericksburg muster a lone run in the ninth as Duane Newton drives in Henniger for their only score.
Two trucks collided at a rural intersection five miles southwest of Greene on Saturday at 11 05 a m. A 1942 K7 International milk truck driven by Lester Rover was hit from the rear by an eastbound 1962 Ford milk truck driven by Richard Mobley. Mobley’s truck ended upside down on a driveway. Rover’s overturned in a ditch. Damage valued at 1130 to Mobley’s truck and 800 to Rover’s truck and shelter. Neither driver was injured.
July 4th at Round Grove Golf and Country Club features a noon pot luck dinner followed by the Mixed Two Ball Foursome tournament. Coffee committee includes Gray, Anderson, Stephen son, Walter Detra, J. T. Truitt and Galen Martzahn. A fireworks display and evening dance with music from The Esquires finish the day.
The Butler County Conservation Board announces the recreation area on the west side of the river just south of the dam in Greene is open. It is now well grassy with fireplaces and picnic tables, and boats may be launched. Fishing from the banks or wading with spinning gear is allowed. Tom Albrecht, former board chair, helped with the project and says the grounds will give residents enjoyment now and later.
Pvt. Lawrence W. Blum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Blum, is stationed at Parris Island South Carolina for six months of Marine reserves training. He has served in the Marines for two years and is assigned to Platoon 143 in Company D of the 1st Recruit Training Battalion at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

Mr and Mrs A F Lindell and Mr and Mrs Arvid Lindell attended funeral services for Gerald Boyd, brother of Mrs Arthur Lindell, at Toland Funeral Home in Newton on Monday afternoon. Mr Boyd died Friday afternoon at a Newton hospital.
Henry Smeins, the local Scout master, announced that all Boy Scouts intending to attend Scout camp must obtain medical forms from him and have their doctors complete them. He stressed the urgency and said Scouts cannot enter camp without the proper forms.
John Stauffer returned home Saturday from St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Waverly where he was a patient.
The Junior Legion squad defeated Tama 7 to 2 to advance to the state tournament final. Greene and Tama pitchers dominated early, with Greene scoring in the 3rd and 9th innings while Tama added runs in the 3rd and 5th. Ott and Myers led Greene on the mound with 13 and 3 strikeouts respectively.
Dale Ver Plank came home Saturday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where he underwent meter surgery.
Park program enters its third week with a pirate theme for 100 children and daily attendance around 54. Children craft hats swords and eye patches, build treasure boxes, and decorate with foil shells and spray. Pirates lead activities. next week features a farm theme and needs plastic jugs.
Bridge and chapel dedication ceremonies highlighted a Wednesday eve observance at the Winnebago Scout Reservation north of town. Community Chest sponsors and local firms funded the foot bridge, chapel, and related Scout activities, with 8 pm ceremonies and parents night activities following at the Council Ring.
Cecil Harris sustained back and ankle injuries at a horse show onJune 23. While judging a horse a runaway colt with a rider struck him causing the injuries.
Vandals broke into the DX Station and Cafe at the intersection of Highways 3 and 14 West of Allison on the weekend. Four new tires were stolen from the station while twenty eight cartons of cigarettes and $51.85 were taken from the cafe. The money came from the juke box and pinball machine. The Butler County Sheriff's office is investigating.
The Greene Commercial Club sponsored a joint event with the Veterans Club drawing players from Mason City, Parkersburg, Osage, Charles City, Dumont, and Waverly. Mrs Evan Robbins of Mason City shot 88 to win the 18 hole champ. Winners in multiple flights included Celia Schnuck Parkersburg and Dorothy Marten Mason City. Local prize winners listed with luncheon attendees and bridge prizes.
The Womans Club of Greene sponsors Bells for Freedom on Thursday July 4. Churches and individuals are asked to ring bells from 12:00 noon to 12:03 with the noon whistle signaling the start.
Up to 1.5 inches of rain fell in Greene and surrounding areas in about an hour Friday afternoon. The storm arrived near 4:30 p.m. and winds knocked down tree limbs across Greene and nearby rural zones.
Galen J. Brinkman 24, of Greene, with wife Jerry Lyn and parents Theodore and Mrs Brinkman, competed in the al Army Rifle and Pistol Matches at Fort Benning Georgia June 5 15 He joined about 900 Army shooters in 13 events and teams A winner advances to the National Rifle and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry Ohio in August.
Mrs W H Buchwelz, long time Cedar Valley Hospital patient, has been transferred to the Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City for continued care after several weeks of treatment.
The Junior Legion Baseball team will practice Friday evening July Std at 6 30 with a focused session.
The Greene league opened Tuesday evening June 25 with the Giants beating the Cards 6 to 5 and the Yanks defeating the Twins 10 to 7. Giants pitchers Stuntz and Schukrecht allowed 3 hits, while Jim and Jerry Shultz yielded 7. Majewski caught for the Giants. Pyatt caught for the Cards. Heidenwirth drove in 2 runs with a triple to lift the Yanks in extra innings, while Trees earned the win for the Yanks with help from Willey and others for the Twins.
Sally Cikeman underwent major surgery Tuesday morning at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. The report notes the procedure was performed successfully with her condition described as improving. Further updates will be provided by hospital officials and family.
The high school summer sectional baseball tournament runs July 8 to July 16 at Waverly. Greene vs Wapsie Valley opens July 8 at 6 39 PM, followed by Janesville vs Waverly Shell Rock at 8 PM. Tuesday features Clarksville vs Summer and Allison vs Oelwein. Wednesday has Denver facing the Greene winner at 6 30 and Fredericksburg meeting the Waverly winner at 8. Semi finals are July 12 at 6 30 and 8 00, with the final July 13 at 7 30 PM.
Butler County Mutual Insurance Association received a certificate of recognition for a notable increase in business during 1962. Dale H. Brinkman, secretary, accepted the award on behalf of the association as Farmers Mutual Reinsurance of Grinnell closed its 35th annual meeting.
Mr and Mrs Ronald Butters of Iowa City welcomed a daughter born June 23 named Rachel Eugene The mother Janice Van Dyke of Greene is the former Mrs Butters Mrs Butters gave birth at home.
Henry Kingery son of Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery remains under treatment at Cedar Valley Hospital after surgery for a broken pelvis and internal injuries from a horse riding accident on June 8.
