Jim Marshall won the B Semi Main in the Nashua auto races on Saturday evening. Marvin Moser earned two thirds in the First Heat and A Semi Main and a fifth in the Feature Event.
James A. Mayer, a 1948 Clarksville High School graduate, is named director of Marengo Publishing Corporation and editor of The Pioneer-Republican in Marengo. A former Air Force lieutenant, he served as news editor since 1954 and has led the paper’s news and photo desks, editorial page, and weekly JAM Session column. He earned a BA in journalism from the University of Iowa and won a 195? Iowa Press Association honorable mention for editorial excellence.
The Cub Scout Dad Lad Day will be at Winnebago Scout Camp near Marble Rock on Sunday June 30. Cubs and fathers invited plus prospective members eight by September 15. Mrs Charles Bragg 82 died at a hospital in Cloquet Minnesota after a lingering illness. Grace Eikenberry born 1880. married Charles Bragg 1901. the Greene couple's survivor list includes three daughters Merfeld Price Bar two grandchildren and many greats. Funeral 2:00 pm at Presbyterian Church with G F Butler officiating. burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Kenneth Rodman reports two more girls entered in the Queen Contest for Dairy Day. Dianne DeBerg of Bristow is sponsored by the Butler County Farmer's Union and Lois Rollman is sponsored by the Town and Country Club of Parkersburg. Dairy Day takes place in Parkersburg on Saturday June 29.
The Junior Legion lost 5 to 3 at Sheffield last Wednesday as host team powered three unearned runs on one hit. Heflin belted a 2nd inning triple and Poppe added a 2nd inning triple for Greene. Rohn earned the win for Sheffield while Ott took the loss.
Mrs Ida Garner 81 of Shell Rock dies Sunday morning at home. She served as Democratic Representative in the 45th Iowa General Assembly in 1933 and 1934. Survivors include two sons. Funeral services are held this afternoon at 2 at Halverson Funeral Home Shell Rock.
The Woman's Invitational Golf Tournament will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Wednesday June 26 with play starting at 7 45 a m. Coffee and donuts will be served until 9 30 a m. There are 9 and 18 hole competitions with prizes for winners in each flight. Mrs William Andrews and Mrs Clarence Barnett coordinate the noon luncheon and bridge will be offered in the afternoon.
Attendees Frank Kingery Dick Hay Mrs Elwin Schuknecht Mrs Dayton Mather and Mrs Fred Hardy attended the funeral services of their cousin Mrs Lucille May of Malcolm at the Sheridan Methodist Church on Monday. Mrs May daughter of Mrs Ida Hershman was killed in an auto accident Thursday when a car was struck by a loaded gravel truck.
Philip E Pooley of Greene has been chosen for the Associate in Honors program at Iowa State University Ames Invitations went to 213 high achievers based on grades National Merit and ACT results He will receive a certificate as an associate honors student The program marks a first time designation for outstanding freshmen this fall Pooley is valedictorian of the 1963 Greene high school class with a 3974 GPA He was band member track participant Bausch and Lamb science award co winner and two year National Honor Society member
Funeral services for Rev William Hood longtime Church of the Brethren pastor were held in Greene afternoon June 18 officiated by Rev Darrell Fryman. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery. Survivors include son Charles Hood of Evanston Illinois and several daughters, siblings, and eighteen grandchildren.
A breakfast will be held at the Country Club on Sunday, June 23, from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Committee members include James Drake, Hoton Bellows, Claire Curtis, Ed Lindel, James Mead, Verna Rottler, Clyde Stuntz, and Max Bellows.
Rickey, one year old son of Mr and Mrs Russell Barry, broke his left leg when a group of children used cardboard cattors to slide down a viaduct incline on Highway 14. Three bars struck a tree stump causing the injury between the ankle and knee. A cast was applied and he is recovering at home.
D Osier son of Mr and Mrs Donald J Osier of Greene serves as aviation electrician’s mate airman in Fighter Squadron 124 at Naval Air Station Miramar California. The squadron trains pilots and ground crew for the Chance Vought Crusader. A Greene Community High School graduate he joined the service in July 1962. Appended note: Dale Johnson Dougherty underwent emergency appendectomy at Cedar Valley Hospital in Cedar City on Monday.

The annual Girl Scout Day Camp opened Monday at Old Round Grove with 87 girls from Allison Clarksville and Greene attending. Unit leaders include Mesdames Busse Hardy Garrson and Sturdevant of Clarksville Roger DeBower John Roelf Richard Speedy Esther Boom garden Viola Mosher and P. Shultz of Allison and Martin Senne Vern Rottler of Greene.
The June family picnic will be held at the Country Club on Thursday evening June 20. Committee members include Mr and Mrs Clyde Stuntz and Dr and Mrs William Andrews.
The Little Leaguers beat host St Ansgar 4 to 3, then the Babe Ruth team won 14 to 3 over St Ansgar. Greene pitcher Johnson struck out 9 and allowed 4 hits. Heidenwirth and Majewski shared catching duties. St. Ansgar’s Michaels pitched with Wuerfel behind the plate. The Babe Ruth game ended after four innings with Greene, St Ansgar, and 3.42.
The 1963 Queen of Conservation Contest will crown finalists at the Butler County Fair on Sunday August 4. Open to single farm girls aged 16 to 21 living in Butler County the county winners advance to a regional contest with a $250 prize for the state winner.
Greene Commercial Club hosts hot dog and milk day on main street next Wednesday June 26 from 11 AM to 4 PM. Attendees receive a hot dog a glass of milk potato chips and catsup and mustard for five cents. Milk donated by local dairies with club members handling prep and service.
Sara Jane Green starts tennis lessons for youths in Greene. She played tennis in school and earned several awards. Interested persons should call her at home to enroll.
Jax Hites an 18 year old son of Donovan Hits a former Greene resident, was critically injured when a semi crashed down a steep Duluth hill. A year old girl died seven cars wrecked and three buildings damaged as the truck sped 80 to 100 mph before stopping. Police cite clutch failure and brake burn out as causes.
Dias H. Ellis remained a patient at Methodist Hospital in Rochester Minnesota after undergoing major surgery last Wednesday.
The Butler County Board of Education met Monday evening June 10 and appointed Mrs. James Graven of Greene to serve as board member for Area No 1. Mrs. Graven replaces Mr. M. K. Sperry of Greene who resigned to retire to California.
Lance Corporal Merrill J. Peters and Mrs Peters of 1575 Spring Place Washington DC welcome a son Christopher John born June 11 weighing 9 pounds 3 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs John Peters of Greene. Terry Kaiser and Mrs Kaiser of Seattle welcome a son Daniel Glen born June 9 weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Co Kaiser of Greene and Mr and Mrs Glen Clark of Orchard.
Peter Dale of the Betty Rose Company will present a trunk show of fall coats at Dralle's Department Store on Thursday June 20 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The public is invited to view the collection.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Morey of Greene and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Freese of Clarksville attended the university ceremony Saturday evening. Richard G. Sletten received his M D degree and will intern with Dr. Sletten and Mrs. Sletten and their son plan to move to San Jose California after July first to intern at Santa Clara County Hospital.
Dr Fred E Miller superintendent of the Waterloo district will preach at the local Methodist Church Sunday at 10 00 am. The Official Board will meet immediately after the service.
The Perrin Park summer program kicked off Monday with the theme Lets Look at Butterflies. About 37 children signed up for butterfly name tags while free crafts included juice can pencil holders and large paper-sack butterflies.
