Mrs. Marion Briggs of Cedar Falls died suddenly early this morning. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the Dahl Funeral Home in Cedar Falls.
New resident Mr and Mrs Art Krull of Greene welcomed a daughter Dawn Marie born June 9 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City He weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Lee Ross Charles City and Mr and Mrs George Krull Greene.
Mrs Charles Crouse is a patient in the Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment of a broken hip.
Jim Marshall of Greene placed third in the B semi main and seventh in the feature at Nashua stock car races Saturday night.
The Perrin Park summer playground opened Monday with about fifty children registered. The first theme Indian Week features totem poles from bottles, name tags, head bands, witch doctors and Indian jewelry. Activities include figurine painting and poet holder weaving directed by Jerry Eimers.
Mrs Leslie Smith underwent surgery last Wednesday at the Hospital at Charles City. The report notes a routine procedure with a stable post operative condition and no complications reported at this time.
Mrs. Russell Meyers attended the funeral after returning from Plainfield where she had stayed since the death of her brother Kenneth Orcutt age 62 Thursday morning. He died at Town City Veterans Hospital. services were held Saturday afternoon in the Plainfield Baptist Church. Orcutt was a longtime bookkeeper for Roach Farms Incorporated before resigning due to illness. He had been in Waverly Hospital for weeks prior to transfer.
Neva Krull a 19 year old Parkersburg High School graduate from Parkersburg was chosen Butler County Dairy Princess at Dairy Day in Allison. Twenty five county contestants entered with Miss Mary Harms named runner up. The event featured a charade band concert and crowning with a free dairy bar for attendees.
Mr and Mrs Robert Schmidt celebrate the birth of a son on Saturday June 19 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The baby weighs 7 pounds 14 ounces and is named Brian Jar.
A family hamburger fry is scheduled at the Country Club on Sunday July 27. Attendees will play golf starting at 3:30 p m and the hamburger fry will follow at the close of the afternoon.
Mrs. Lowell Allen reports a wild rose growing through the top of a nine foot lilac bush. The rose bloomed last year and is now in full bloom at the top of the lilac, a curious horticultural feature observed in her yard.
Mr and Mrs Will Ramker of Greene and Teddy Grimm of Charles City spent last week with the Ramker family in Chicago Illinois. Their two grandsons Mark and Mitchell Riehle returned with them for a two week visit.
A representative of the Social Security Administration District office in Waterloo will visit Allison at the Court House on July 7 14 and 28 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Earl T. About 370 high school and junior high musicians from 10 states rehearse daily at the University of Iowa for the 16th All State Music Camp in Iowa City. Wendy Martzahn of Greene plays alto sax in the Black Band. the camp runs from June 13 to 25 with bands, chorus, and orchestra.
Mr. and Mrs. Gary Kingery of Charles City announce the birth of a daughter at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital on Tuesday June 15. The baby weighs 7 pounds 7.32 ounces and is named Kristina. Grandparents are Charles and Mrs. Shellenberger of Charles City and Orval and Mrs. Kingery of Greene, with great grandparents E. M. Hunter of Boone.
The top youth orators of the Church of the Brethren compete at the denomination’s annual conference in Ocean Grove New Jersey June 22 to 27. Jim Fryman 18 son of Rev and Mrs Darrell Fryman is among 23 high school students from 15 states who won local and district contests and advance to the semi finals June 24 with five finalists June 25.
Eight year old Cindy Weinberg daughter of Mr and Mrs Vernon Weinberg was a patient at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo for four days last week where she received treatment.
Gregory J. Kehoe and Mr and Mrs Lavern Kehoe of Greene attended a College of Engineering orientation at Iowa State University Ames this week. The university sponsors sessions to help students prepare for entrance exams consult counselors and become familiar with campus before fall quarter schedules are set.
A stag supper will be held at the Country Club on Thursday evening June 24. The organizing committee includes Herman Stubble, Harry Walder, Harold Williams, Verle Barth, Eli Astor, Steve Brandi, Walter Detra, Robert Jensen, Carl Fraschi, Charles Stanton, Harvey Pauli and Dwight Pooley.
Greene residents, especially the James Dralle family, will miss Maria Quitiba as she departs for her native land. Maria is an apt student with an engaging personality who made friends with the entire community. Mrs Dralle, pictured with Maria and daughter Pam, called it a rare privilege to foster such a gifted teenager.
Mrs. J B Hardy reported her sister Miss Lois Burnett suffered a lengthwise fracture from knee to ankle. Burnett, recently returning to Santa Cruz from South Dakota where she taught, was admitted to Community Hospital in room 15.
Ramblers beat Rockford 3 to 2 as Jeff Drake started the scoring with a walk and steal. Ackley scored on a Jones double, Buffridge and Hegarty drew walks and scored on miscues in the fourth. Crewe stole eight bases and Neal fanned Rambers hitters, while Mark Ott pitched for Greene. The rain-postponed game against St Ansgar was suspended in the fourth and will be resumed later this week alongside a Greene makeup date.
The Women's City Golf Tourney crowned winners across flights with Fern Stock and Marse. Mary Schroe and Drake noted in secondary standings. Prizes included longest drive and putt, with Macleod and Baroe recognized in special awards.
Residents discover cut poplar trees along Lloyd Bigler’s Bluff Street alley. About four feet tall Lombardy poplars, valued at $25 each, were removed or damaged. Greene County Sheriff’s Office investigating the incident.
About seven thousand delegates from 290000 Lutherans attended the Iowa District American Lutheran Church convention on Luther College campus in Decorah June 21 to 24. Greene delegates Herman Miller and August Heeren attended. The theme was The People of God in the World of Men. Major speakers included Dr William Stingfellow Dr A E Hanson Dr Bernhard M Christensen Rev Herbert Nottbohm and Dr Frederick Schiotz.
Ames based university announces 333 upperclassmen receive general scholarships for the 1965 66 year totaling 94680 dollars. Engineering student Lyle Prunty is among the recipients and is the son of Mr and Mrs L D Pruntvy.
Maria Consuelo Quitiba, an American Field Service exchange student from Brazil, recounts her year in Greene. She describes arrival with Drake family, school life at Greene High, Homecoming and Prom memories, snow fascination, and growing affection for American culture, food, and friends. She plans to return to Brazil in July after a tour.
The Bennetette Wesleyan Methodist Church plans a dedication service on a June afternoon at 3 00 pm at the church in Bennetette Township Center School House site. Rev Donald Koun will participate along with local pastors in a public event with refreshments afterward. The church traces to 1885 formation as Butler Mission and was rebuilt in 1892 with land donated by Ira Chamberlain. It is the oldest church in Bennetette Township, with a history of missions to Africa and Kentucky and notable pastors. remodeled in 1964 adding a gymnasium and recreational space. current activities include Sunday services, Bible studies, Sunday School, and youth programs.
Elmer Stock announced early plans to start construction soon on a new bowling alley about 14 miles north of Greene along Highway 14. The L shaped building will be 150 by 40 with a 60 by 50 wing and will house six lanes plus lounge and lunch counter space.
