Karen Gersema Killed In Auto Mishap Near Hampton

A two vehicle crash west of Hampton on June 6 claimed the life of Karen Jean Gersema, 12, daughter of Donald and the late Mrs. Gersema of Webster City. Betty Mae Richardson, 39, driver of the convertible, also died, while Richardson’s daughter Julie, 12, was critically injured and taken to Mercy Hospital Des Moines. Funeral services for Karen were held at Foster Funeral Home Webster City with burial in New Hartford Cemetery. she is survived by her parents two sisters and grandparents.

Dave Shooks Home From Arizona

Dave Shooks and his wife returned from Tempe after six months visiting their daughter Mrs Walter Weiland and Diane and son Robert Shook. Robert works as executive director for the State of Arizona for the Retarded Children Association. Arizona passed a bill funding $950 000 for a new colony or school on 30 acres donated by the government in Tucson Arizona.

Waterloo Woman Wins Invitational Golf Championship

The Women’s Invitational Golf Tournament at Round Grove Golf and Country Club last Wednesday drew seventy players from Waterloo Cedar Falls Charles City and surrounding towns. Hazel Scheppele of Waterloo captured the 18 hole championship with 96 while Norma Bromberg of Charles City won the 9 hole title with 48 and led nearest the flag on No 7. Margaret Olds was runner up in the 18 hole event with 98.

Babe Ruth and Little Leaguers Sweep Marble Rock

The Little League and Babe Ruth teams each won their third straight game as Marble Rock fell 8 6 and 6 0. Greene collected five hits led by Jim McLennan, Dave Eimers, Steve Stanton, Ken Wunsch, and Ron Schafer. Jerry Shultz shut out the Babe Ruth 6 0 with 11 strikeouts while allowing two hits. Ruth’s next game was postponed to June 17. Greene hosts Nashua Thursday and travels to Rudd Monday.

Grandson Larry Whitehead Wounded in Vietnam Action

Mr and Mrs L C Whitehead received word their grandson Sergeant Larry Whitehead a Marine was wounded by shrapnel in his right hand in Vietnam. Larry son of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Whitehead Jr of Amery Wisconsin is in a Vietnam hospital.

Road Construction Bids Sought for Buller County Projects

The State Highway Commission will take bids at the June 20 meeting for two highway works in Buller County. One covers 8 miles of grading culverts and Portland cement concrete paving with lighting on Iowa 3 from the west junction with Iowa 14 to east of Iowa 188. The second covers resurfacing of a bridge floor on Iowa 3 in Shell Rock.

Teachers Attend Head Start Orientation at State College of Iowa

Mrs James Menken and Helen Thomas were among 25 at a six day orientation at SCI for personnel who will work in Project Head Start this summer. The program will begin at Greene Elementary School on June 19 with eight weeks of classes for area children ages 4 and 5.

Youth Golf Tourney At Round Grove Country Club

Youths from Round Grove Golf and Country Club play two youth tournaments starting Monday at 1 PM. Three flights split by grade levels 6 and under, 7–9, and 10–12 with prizes in each. March of Dimes campaign totals in Butler County

Mrs. William Schneiderman of Allison chaired the Butler County March of Dimes drive reporting $675.24 raised. Town contributions included Greene 90.64, Allison 106.40, Dumont 137.10, Bristow 27.00, Aredale 14.20, Clarksville 88.50, Parkersburg 84.18, and Aplington 127.25.

Fire damages unoccupied house on William Maling farm

The interior of an unused house on the William Maling farm west of Greene suffered extensive fire damage Thursday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Maling of Bangor Maine were painting and cleaning inside when an old gas stove toppled over, causing the blaze.

Miss Georgian Downs of Greene Iowa joined about 500 attendees at the fifteenth Annual State Convention of the Iowa Association for Retarded Children in Marshalltown on June 10 and 11. Tindall named to fill Butler County supervisor vacancy

Wilbur Tindall, 58, of Greene, appointed by a special committee to replace Cecil Starkweather on the Butler County Board of Supervisors from the second district. The appointment runs until the next general election in November 1968, with a short term to January 1, 1971. Tindall is a Republican with farming ties and current affiliation with Tyden Feeds at Dougherty. He and his wife have two sons Lloyd and Donn and a daughter Belva Kruckow, plus six grandsons.

House Passes Bill to Restore Area Colleges and Set Restrictions

Grassley reports the House approved Senate File 616 to bail out area community colleges with a 4.5 million dollar appropriation aimed at eliminating deficits. The bill imposes strict limits including 160 acre campus cap, non duplicative courses, local tuition control, minimum teaching hours, credit transfer from area courses to high school diplomas, salary cap at the state superintendent level, and no property tax funding for operations. The Senate may alter restrictions, but the measure signals legislative disgust at prior financial irresponsibility and seeks to stabilize the system.
