Tim and Tom Brunner aged 10 and 12 report they have trapped 100 pocket gophers this spring. They say the total is twice any previous effort and they receive 10 cents per gopher. The feats double as pest control while highlighting youth involvement.
The Red Cross offers swimming classes for Greene youths starting Monday June 17 at Parkersburg pool with a 9:00 am bus from Greene for beginners. Beginners include listed names. other registered children depart Perrin Park at 8:00 am. Mrs Ruffridge leads the program with openings for additional students. advanced, intermediate, and swimmers may join 10:00 am or 9:00 am classes. Junior and senior life saving classes began today and run Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:00 am. Students must provide their own transportation.
Jim Marshall car No. 59 earned a third in the 3rd heat and a second in the B Semi Main, while Marvin Moser car No. 21 took a second in the A Semi Main. Both drivers placed in Big 4 Fairgrounds races at Nashua Saturday evening before rain halted action after five races.
Cadet Paul N. Burroughs of Greene, a first year at the U S Air Force Academy, journeys on a field study trip visiting Air Force Army and Navy bases. He will receive briefings and join jet flights and shipboard activities to gain indoctrination into major DoD commands. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Clifford E Burroughs and a Greene Community High School graduate.
Twelve candidates will vie for the Butler County Dairy Princess title on Saturday June 22 as part of Dairy Day activities in Parkersburg. Carolyn Shultz and others support Dairy Day events in Parkersburg with a 1:00 p m parade on Main Street featuring bands floats ponies and Dairy Princess candidates including Miss Judy Stemnsrud Iowa Dairy Princess. A free dairy bar follows with milk cheese crackers and dips served by 4 H girls. At 2:00 p m tractor rodeo and water carnival at the elementary school and swimming pool respectively. An 7:30 p m address by L B Liddy Iowa Secretary of Agriculture caps the day and the 1963 Butler County Dairy Princess coronation concludes the program.
At 7 30 a m Friday morning a milk truck driven by Fred Nordmeyer struck the left side of a car driven by Wilbur Tindall. The Tindall car then swerved hitting a parked Creamery panel, which hit Charles Ream's Ford. Tindall’s 1963 Chevrolet suffered heavy damage. Nordmeyer’s truck and other parked vehicles sustained various damages. Tindall attempted to pass on the right as Nordmeyer turned into the Creamery to unload milk.
Graduated Roger Jay Borchard, son of Mr and Mrs William Borchard and Mrs Carol Glass, daughter of Mr and Mrs W J Tatum, were among the graduates at the State College of Iowa in Cedar Falls. Commencement exercises were held Thursday evening at O R Latham stadium on the campus.
Co. B. Akers, Auditor of State, orders a district Work Shop School of Instruction for all county officials, deputies and clerks to review Iowa laws affecting counties. District 2 meeting includes Butler County, June 13 at Hotel Hanford Mason City at 9:00 a.m. Court House closed for attendance.
Eldred Eugene Kingery, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orval Kingery of Greene, has enlisted at Waterloo in the United States Navy for four years under the Nuclear Electronic Field. He will undergo nine weeks of recruit training in San Diego, return home for a 14 day leave, and is assigned to U S Naval Training Center San Diego 33 California.
John Stauffer was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Waverly on Tuesday for observation and treatment.
The Butler County Historical Society announces new officers Paul Schaeffer of Allison as president Ben Westendorf of Allison as vice president Mrs Dele Van Eman of Parkersburg as secretary and Charles Yost of Bristow as treasurer. Board members include Gomer Evans and Hertha Johnson of Clarkswie Mrs George Feltus and others from Allison Greene New Hartford Aredale Apington Shell Rock Bristow and Dumont with multiple spouses listed.
The Junior Legion posted a 4 to 3 win over Charles City in eight innings with Greene scoring the decisive run in the bottom of the eighth. Woodley pitched five and Ott finished, totaling 11 strikeouts and 2 hits for Greene, while Charles City managed 7 strikeouts, 10 walks and 2 hits. The team then won 3 to 6 against Rockwell-Swaledale, Nile Myers pitching a near no hitter through seven with 10 strikeouts and 3 walks, and Don Eddy fanning 10 over four hits allowed.
Retta Dunning 83 died Sunday at Chau tauqua Guest Home Charles City after five weeks there She was born January 14 1880 in Compton Illinois to Miles Marsh and Anna Barr The family moved to a farm west of Greene She married George McGee in 1904 lived in Meservey until his death 1907 One son Vern C McGee survived In 1907 she returned to Greene and in 1939 married Marshall F Dunning who died 1951 Survivors include two grandsons nine great grandchildren a niece Irene Bragg Shadle Osage and other relatives Funeral at 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Methodist Church with Rev Harold Miller Burial Rose Hill Cemetery Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge

James Stanton son of Mrs Ambrose Stanton and the late Ambrose Stanton earned a Juris Doctor degree in law at the University of Iowa Friday morning. Attendees at the commencement included Mrs Ambrose Stanton Mr and Mrs Roger Stanton Charles Stanton Bernita Stanton of Greene and Mrs Loren Clabough of Cedar Falls.
Mary Sue Neessen, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Neessen of Grundy Center, was baptized during Sunday morning worship at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Rev. I. J. Denies officiated. sponsors were Clyde Bird of Waterloo and Donald Denies. Grandparents and great-grandmothers attended. guests stayed with Rev. and Mrs. Denes.

Lloyd Cordes 28 Bassett Emmer Harwood Sisley 44 Canton Minnesota and Larry Dean Raymond 18 Greene were charged with breaking jail and larceny after escaping Chickasaw County Jail Saturday night. Cordes faced extra larceny for stealing a sheriff office gun. Sisley and Raymond were arrested near Clarksville, Cordes found hiding near a farm.
The Merchants earned their second win in as many starts by defeating Tripoli 4 to 1 on Sunday afternoon. Greene started strong, Tripoli loaded the bases in the eighth, Sutton relieved and allowed the lone Tripoli run. Sutten drove in a run in the second, Barth and Newton contributed in the third, and Newton scored again in the sixth. Next Sunday the Merchants travel to Denver.

New residents Mr and Mrs Richard E Ott welcomed a son born Thursday June 6 weighing seven pounds six ounces named Richard Earl Ricky. Mr and Mrs Robert R Fiddick Greene welcomed a son born Saturday June 8 weighing eight pounds three ounces named James Raymond Fiddick. Grandparents Marion Gibson Floyd Fiddick and J R Fiddick great grandparents George Stewart Bristow referenced.
Roger Spratt earned a National Science Foundation scholarship to attend a summer biology course at Earlham College in Richmond Indiana. The program runs from June 24 to August 11. Mr and Mrs Spratt headed to Menasha Wisconsin on June 11 to visit Mr and Mrs John Spratt for a few days.
The Greene Little Leaguers and Babe Ruth Leaguers lost to Marble Rock in Monday evening games, 4 3 and 3 2. Gary Johnson fanned 10 for the Little Leaguers, with 3 hits allowed by Greene. Marble Rock built a 1 0 lead in the first and 3 in the third, while Babe Ruth rallied for two in the final inning but fell short 3 2.
