Wendy Martzaka was crowned Queen of the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City after beating 68 contenders. The event, marred only by rain cancellations of parade, boosted community pride and echoed a 1946 crown recipient Marilyn Fowler.
Wendy Martzahn was crowned Miss North Iowa 1969 at the North Iowa Band Festival held in Mason City Fieldhouse with 68 contestants. Richard Bailey presented the tiara and robe as the Mason City Chamber of Commerce noted the event’s weather-related cancellation of some activities. The Fieldhouse crowd packed for the coronation heard the pep band play and watched as Martzahn received a bouquet and a kiss on the cheek.
The Greene Jaycees installed officers for the coming year at a June 4 supper meeting at the Country Club. Attendees included Jaycee wives with corsages. State president Roger Poppins and National Director Dave Siefkes attended. New officers were Don Feldman president Jim Menken state director Galen Lindell vice president Jim Richards secretary Gary Rottler treasurer Dick Jaspers internal director and Gene Ross external director.
Homer Clifton Hurd 71 died Sunday morning June 15 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City He was born March 30 1898 at Aredale son of Clifton Hurd and Nelle Maxwell He farmed locally and was retired He married Mabel Burns October 12 1926 she preceded him in death in April 1933 He later married De Ferris Shultz Powers October 3 1990 Survivors include De Ferris nee Shuutz a granddaughter Grace Ann Powers of Humboldt two brothers Seaman of Fort Dodge Milan of Greene two sisters Elsie Folkerts of Rudd Myrtle Enabnit of Nora Springs Burial was Hillside Cemetery Marble Rock with Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge Services were held June 17 at 2 00 pm at First Presbyterian Church.

Judging of Dairy Princess contestants runs 9:00 to 12:00 a.m. at the REC basement. luncheon for contestants 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at City Hall. parade at Fairgrounds 1:30 p.m.. free Dairy Bar on Main Street at 2:30 p.m. Afternoon features bingo and train rides for children, with prizes by the Commercial Club. Coronation of the 1969 Dairy Princess at 8:00 p.m. on Main Street. Jacque Roose, 1968 Butler County Dairy Princess, presides. Cash prizes $25 and $10 for the winner and runner-up. Additional dairy princess Miss Kay Aries and Miss Darlys Kielman receive sponsorships from local groups.
Mr and Mrs Dean Edwards of Dougherty represented Farmers Coop at the Felco Lakes Conference near Lake Okoboji with about 200 attendees from Iowa Nebraska Minnesota Illinois and South Dakota. The theme was The Cooperative System A Forward Force in Agriculture with talks on Modern Farmer Cooperatives panorama Rochdale principles. Attendees joined Q and A sessions and women and children activities were included. Felco sponsors the regional cooperative network.
Anthony Nikolas is ill with chicken pox at the home of his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smeins. The report notes the family context and illness without additional details.
The Ramblers defeated Nora Springs 6 to 2 on Friday. Nora Springs scored first in the 2nd inning, but Greene tied it with a Steve Brunsma triple, and the Ramblers pulled away with three runs in the 4th and two more in the 6th. Jerry Shultz earned the win.
Floyd County 4 H members will launch summer activities with presentation workshops at the 4 H building on the Fairgrounds. Afternoon sessions begin 1 30 p m and evening sessions at 7 45 p m with May Johnson leading training on demonstrations and illustrated talks.
George Linn Roberts 31 died Sunday June 15 at St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Mason City. Born January 18 1918 in Montana he was a Greene high school teacher and World War II veteran. Survivors include wife Florence daughter Susan son Linn George brothers Stanley and Leo. Services 2:00 pm Wednesday at St Peters Lutheran Greene. Burial Union Mound Cemetery Sumner. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mr and Mrs Daryl Fischer of Ames welcomed Karen Elizabeth born Monday June frish at Mary Greeley Hospital weighing seven pounds eleven ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Robert Fischer and Dr and Mrs Eric Pfeiffer of Des Moines.

Returned home in Charles City after a short hospital stay for surgery. Two year old Don Duffield underwent the procedure last Wednesday at Floyd County Memorial Hospital and was discharged to return home on Thursday, June 12.
Albert Mahnke was moved from Floyd County Memorial Hospital to the ith Street Chautauqua Rest Home in Charles City for ongoing care. The transfer reflects a change in patient location within county health facilities.
Fifty county residents were drawn for possible District Court jury duty for July August and September 1969. Clerk Walter W. Wilhelm announced jurors listed by township will report on call with no fixed date yet.
A new physical fitness program opens at the high school for anyone interested. Sessions run each Monday and Thursday from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The program includes weight lifting, exercises, and games with Bill Garner directing.
Reverend George S. Knutson resigns from Calvary Baptist Greene effective after morning service June 29 and accepts a pastorate at Le Claire Baptist Church Le Claire Iowa. He and Mrs Knutson reflect on years of cooperative ministry, growth, and friendly neighbors. Final services set for June 29 with a July 20 start in Le Claire after a Minnesota vacation.
The local baseball league begins play next Tuesday evening June 21 with three games scheduled Yankees versus Giants at 6 15 p m Indians versus Orioles at 7 25 p m and Braves versus Dodgers at 8 30 p m Players should bring league shirts and exchanges are allowed if needed Shirts will be provided to anyone without one Eligibility covers boys in 2nd grade to 7th grade for the 1969 70 school year Report to practice schedules include 3rd 6th and 7th graders at 9 45 a m Wednesdays and Fridays and 1st 3rd and 4th graders at 10 45 a m on Wednesdays and Fridays
The Greene Merchants fell 9 to 1 to Allison Cats on the local diamond last Sunday evening. Allison collected 9 hits while Greene drew 7 walks and committed 35 errors. John Barth led Greene with 2 hits as the Merchants host Rockwell next Sunday June 22 at 2 00 p.m.
Mr Clinton Marsh came back to his home at Waverly after a stay at St Josephs Mercy Hospital on Tuesday June 17th.
Duane R. Leavens USN firesman apprentice and son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane E. Leavens of Greene serves aboard the amphibious cargo ship USS Durham in Long Beach California. The Durham, recently commissioned, features a four-man capable engine room, a helicopter platform for medical or combat aid, and cargo handling plus troop carriage for combat support.
Paul Shook was released from Floyd County Memorial Hospital on Saturday June 14 after a short admission starting Thursday June 12. He is reported to be getting along fine.
Mr and Mrs R A Bathke completed a two weeks vacation tour including stops in Las Vegas Hawaii and San Francisco returning home.
The Butler County Board of Supervisors approved a zoning ordinance guiding nonagricultural development outside towns. The plan, based on a two year study led by planner D K Rippl, creates districts for business industrial and residential uses and bans unauthorized auto salvage yards. Dave Everds is named zoning officer. A five member Board of Adjustment will hear appeals and interpret the zoning map.
The Woman's Club of Greene sponsors a six week summer program with daily activities. Kenneth Henline leads Monday fishing at Conservation Park at 1 PM, El-Bar Lanes hosts Tuesday bowling at 10 AM with Elmer Stock, Cadet Girl Scouts meet at Perrin Park at 10 AM for crafts and games, Dexter Alexander conducts Wednesday archery at 3 PM near the elementary school. Horsemanship is canceled and children may join even if not registered.
A family picnic will be held at Round Grove Country Club on Thursday June 19. Ladies Day is Wednesday June 25.
