June 14 to 21 marks Iowa's 27th Soil and Water Conservation Week, as Butler Soil Conservation District notes its 17th year since 1947. Governor Harold E. Hughes proclaims the week to urge citizen and organization participation in soil and water conservation programs. The history cites early district formations from 1940 to 1952 totaling 100 districts, and notes the 1935 Public Law 46 establishing the Soil Conservation Service in Agriculture.
Mrs. Robert Hichards of Ed ford England is spending three months with her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Orville Stewart and family. She arrived by Pan American jet direct from London to Chicago.
Miss Carol Crosby of Greene is named to Dana College Blair Nebraska Dean's List for the second semester of 1963 64. She is among 57 honor students and has a GPA of 8.00 on a 9.00 scale as a Dana College junior.
Mrs Helen Ochmke of Wilmington Delaware arrived Saturday for a several weeks visit at the home of her aunt Mrs Maude Stevens and Genevieve in town.
Barbara Allison daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Allison joined fifteen other young women as Franciscan novices at Mount St. Clare Motherhouse Clinton on Saturday morning June 13. The ceremony was conducted by Bishop Ralph L Hayes with sermon by Rev Noel William. Barbara takes the religious name Sister Sean Marie. The new novices spent the afternoon with family and friends including the Allison, Myers, and Greene families from Des Moines Cedar Rapids Chicago and Greene.
David P Ipsen machinist's mate fireman apprentice USN son of Mr and Mrs Harry J Ipsen of Greene participated aboard the USS Bennington in a combined sea assault and airborne combat training exercise called LIGTAS May 12 to June 1 under SEATO direction in the Philippines LIGPAS meaning Saved or Rescued in Philippine language is sponsored by the United States and hosted by the Republic of the Philippines
Susan Wedeking daughter of Mr and Mrs Neal Wedeking Clarksville and Ellis Soash son of Mr and Mrs Don Soash Shell Rock recently returned from the Iowa Rural Electric Youth Tour. Butler County REC sponsors two juniors each year for the Washington DC trip under the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives. A total of 63 juniors statewide participated this year visiting Des Moines Maumee Ohio Washington DC and landmark sites including the White House and Arlington Cemetery.
The Women’s division of the Country Club hosts a city golf tournament on Wednesday June 24 with 9 or 18 hole flights. Coffee at 8 15 a m, tee off 9 a m D S T, catered luncheon 11 30 a m to 1 p m, and possible bridge or 500 in the afternoon. Reservations by June 22 via Mrs Herman Stubbe or Mrs Jim Schroeder.
The Bennedette Wesleyan Methodist Church west of Greene is being remodeled. The congregation will hold services at the former Lee Cutler home one mile east of the church while work proceeds. Plans include moving the church from its foundation to a new basement and enlarging the structure. Rev. Richard Stoneberg serves as pastor.
Clarksville hosts Dairy Day on Saturday June 20 with alt Dairy Princess Carol Hunziker present. Hunziker, daughter of Arthur and Mrs Hunziker, dairy farm near Sac City Iowa, recently finished year two at Iowa State majoring in dietetics. She joins parade, dairy bar at 1 30 pm and coronation at 7 30 pm. Sixteen Butler County candidates for Dairy Princess are listed with sponsors. Greene playground program begins June 22 at Perrin Park from 2 30 to 3 30 pm for residents age one year and up, sponsored by the Woman's Club of Greene.
Greene racer Jim Marshall scored two firsts in the B Semi Main and Feature at Nashua stock car races on Saturday. Roger Lindell finished fourth in the A Semi Main. A protest against car No 59 driven by Jim Marshall was upheld after teardown but then nullified when stock status was confirmed.
A stag supper will be held at the Country Club on Monday evening June 22. The Allison members are on the committee with L. W. Buddenhagen and parker Senmity in charge.
Airman Second Class Keith Maier and Mrs Maier of Travis AFB California stayed from Saturday to Tuesday in the home of Mr and Mrs Donald Allan and Shirley.
The first family picnic of the season will be held at the Country Club on Thursday evening June 18. Mr. and Mrs. James Mead and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ott are in charge.
Greene junior squad edged Rockford 3 to 2 on Monday night in a nip and tuck game. Mark Ott pitched six innings with four hits four walks and five strikeouts before Opperman finished. Greene scored in the third on a Dralle Barth Ott sequence and added a sixth inning run on a wild pitch after Spratt reached on a force. Rockford produced four hits led by Shhindler and Brandau as their offense fizzled in late innings.
Mr and Mrs Glenn Lehmann of Downes California visit cousin Mrs Pearl Neumann. Both travel by wheelchairs and are en route home from a vacation spanning Minnesota and other states.
New cars and trucks registered in Butler County include multiple owners and brands. Names span Dumont Greene Parkersburg Allison Aredale Clarksville New Hartford Parkersiig Bristow and others, with makes such as Chevrolet Ford Oldsmobile Pontiac and a Chevrolet truck among registrations.

Marble Rock resident Paul Gene Shultz faced a defective equipment charge and paid a 5.60 dollar fine plus 4.00 dollars in costs. Tripoli’s David Allen Lahmann was cited for a stop sign violation and paid 5.00 dollars in fines with 4.00 dollars in costs.
Mr and Mrs Ray Holzschuh of Kickitat Washington plan to return home this week following visits in the homes of their parents Mr and Mrs Oscar Holzschuh of Clarksville and Mr and Mrs Albert Behnke of
Debra Meyrer daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Meyer and Ricky Caldwell son of Mrs Nancy Caldwell underwent tonsillectomies at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on June day. Both children were discharged to their homes on Wednesday.
Seermsan J Needham son of Mr and Mrs Berle Needham earned a bachelor of science degree in agriculture at the Ohio State University commencement in Columbus Ohio on Friday.
The second Red Cross swimming lesson will be held Thursday morning at the Parkersburg pool. Fifty five children registered last Thursday, but 26 attended due to bad weather. Remaining signups welcome. A through M depart Perrin Park 8 00 a.m. and N through Z depart 9 00 a.m. Junior lifesaving for ages 12 15 and senior course for 16+ begin next Monday June 22 and meet Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays at 11 15 a.m.
The Babe Ruth squad won 13 to 1 over Nashua and 5 to 1 over Rudd for consecutive victories. Little Leaguers split, beating Nashua 7 to 3 but losing to Rudd 4 to 1, leaving their record at 2 and 2. Pitching details credit Wendy Stuntz and Greg Drakle for the Babe Ruth team. Kock, Johnson, Stuntz, and Schultz hit for power. Ramblers rallied with three runs in the second inning and a late triple by Hagerty. Unlenkopp allowed four hits and one run with eight strikeouts in a strong start. (continued on page 1)
Mrs A F Lindell Sr was taken to Park Hospital in Mason County on Monday where she underwent major surgery Tuesday morning. Doctors expect she will remain in the hospital for about 10 days.
Mr and Mrs Lylesmitz returned Sunday from a weeklong vacation at Ken's Red Lake Lodge in Red Lake Ontario Canada. Kenneth Litter er, former Greene resident, owns the resort.
