Greene residents sympathize with flood victims while noting their own water remained in the river. Farmers sought relief by leaving for a few days of fishing as fields dried. The editor jokes about a low disaster area and recalls Senator Everett Dirksen. The piece muses on upcoming elections with a wide open Republican race and possible Johnson Kennedy tensions.
The annual junior golf tournament was held at the local Country Club on Monday. Greg Drakle won the high school division with Karl Sneed the runner-up. Tim Meidenwirth and Dan Weyand were first and second in the junior high group. David Eimers won the event for children through the 6th grade. Ann Allison won the high school girls division. Mary Rotler won the junior high division. Larry Eimers won the flag hole prize.
Mr and Mrs Henry Paul moved to a small acreage near Clarksville on June 1. They sold their house on South Ist Street to Mr and Mrs Leo Rohwedder, who relocated from Bloomington California to the area.
Pamela Hamilton daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Hamilton Des Moines was elected governor of Hawkeye Girls State held on the campus of the State College of Town at Cedar Falls last week The Hamiltons are former residents of Greene Theresa Rutz daughter of Mr and Mrs Florian Rutz was elected a county supervisor of MaCrae County Some 300 Iowa high school juniors participated in the project in citizenship sponsored by the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls are selected by their local Auxiliaries for qualifications of leadership good citizenship and scholarship During the heavily scheduled week the girls separated into two parties created governmental units elected officials conducted the affairs of the state government and heard prominent speakers in education civic organizations and government
Mrs Butler G F Butler will attend a series of meetings on The School Nurse and the Mentally Retarded Child at the University of Iowa in Iowa City on June 28 29 and 30. The program is open to all school nurses and is supported by the Children Bureau of the U S Department of Health Education and Welfare.

Jack Hagarty a 1958 Greene Community School and 1962 Loras College graduate received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemistry at Duquesne University Pittsburgh on June 5 He and his wife have lived in Racine Wisconsin since February where he works in R and D at Johnson Wax Company He is the son of Mr and Mrs Donald Hagarty of Greene
Marine Private James R. Eggena, son of Mrs. Gertrude Eggena of Greene, graduated from eight weeks of intensified recruit training at the San Diego Marine Corps Recruit Depot. He studied small arms marksmanship bayonet fencing drill and Marine history along with academics and will begin four weeks of individual combat and four weeks of basic specialist training before assignment to a unit.
Mrs. Roger Schuknecht won 20 dollars in Greene Bucks and Mrs. Archie Raymond won 5 dollars at the drawing Saturday evening. No winner for the ten Greene Bucks. the amount will be added to next Saturday nights second prize.
Greene's Little Leaguers beat Marble Rock 21 1 in a makeup game with a no hitter by three pitchers and 12 hits including a Bryan Trees homer. They then defeated Rockford 8 1 as David Eimers pitched a one hitter. Babe Ruth won 1 0 on a Gary Johnson no hitter as Rick Siemens scored on Steve Brunsma's single. Next, Greene travels to Nashua Thursday and hosts Rudd Monday.
Miss Gloria Day returns this week from Houghton College New York after completing her junior year in the College of Music. Her mother Mrs B D H Day of Des Moines and her aunt Miss Alice Barnett attended Commencement exercises and stayed with Rev and Mrs C H Barnett former Bennedette Wesleyan Church pastors.
Greene Community School begins summer beginning band for 32 fourth graders. Ray Holtz, band director, notes strong turnout and plans to resume in fall with fifth grade members. Students listed include Nordmeyer Miller Adams etc and others across flute clarinet saxophone cornet trombone drums.
Four Upper Iowa University co eds including Esther Bishop were named monitors for Zinita B Graf Hall for women during the 10 week summer session. Miss Helen Tuttle dean of women announced the plan. Monitors act as reps of the dean and head resident enforcing dorm regulations. Esther Bishop is daughter of Mr and Mrs Clifford Bishop Greene.
Day camp for Girl Scouts begins next Monday June 20 at Heery Woods State Park Clarksville. A school bus is arranged for transportation with each girl paying 1.00 for costs. Bus departs Perrin Park 9:00 a.m. returns 3:30 p.m. June 22 bus leaves 1:30 p.m. and returns 8:30 p.m. Parents may visit Wednesday evening. A noon meal is provided Monday. girls should bring Junior handbooks.
Among Mason City Junior College graduates were Vicki Brunsma Lana Cheney and Merlin Whiteside of Greene The exercises were held on Monday June 6 Vicki Brunsma is employed at the Medical Art Center in Mason City.
The Republican State Convention will convene at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines on Saturday June 18 with a 9:30 a.m. CDT general session to adopt a state platform and conduct business. Friday events include a Polk County picnic from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. followed by the Third District Caucus at 8:30 p.m. in the Hotel Savery Grand Ballroom. Delegates attending from Butler County include Lawrence Prunty Mary Leigh Drake Pearl Fisher Mrs Claire Woodley Parker Schmitz Bill Jacobs Warren Severs Homer Hurd Gomer Evans Charles Hardy Herman Faber John Stout Vernon Kuhl Craig Rolfs George Palmer and others from multiple towns.
Sally Hammel of Ellsworth Junior College in Iowa Falls earned dean's list honors in her freshman year. She received a $200 scholarship for the coming school year and worked as a secretary in the dean's office for three months this summer.
The Iowa State Tax Commission reports quarter ending March 31, 1966 tax totals from sales through December 31, 1965. Greene led Butler County towns with 23,419.68, Allison 19,647.07, and others including Parkersburg 16,659.68, Clarksville 12,495.74, Aplington 9,184.96, followed by Dumont 7,211.73, Shell Rock 5,813.75, New Hartford 5,347.94, rural 8,744.01, and small towns under 500 population 2,460.64. non permit 699.45. Use tax receipts totaled 565.59 for 28 returns, while 296 new vehicles/trailers contributed 18,162.49.
The Greene Incal league opens Friday night with games at 6 15 Orioles versus Indians Dodgers versus Braves Giants versus Yankees. Eligible players are boys from 1st to 6th grade who will receive a T shirt bearing a major league team name. About 90 boys expected. coaches and helpers needed. Report to Coach Jerry Eimers and notify him to volunteer. Games run Fridays June 17 and 24 and July 8 and Tuesdays July 12 and 19.
Claire Curtis an insurance man and his wife Mildred return from a week long all expense paid fishing trip on Leech Lake Minnesota. The trip honors the high twenty producers of Farmer's Casualty Company. Curtis notes fishing was fair.
The Music Mothers drive raised 36114.36 from 562 donors in Greene Community School District. One hundred new band uniforms and two majorette outfits are funded, with 23 donors giving 90 or more. The effort included a street dance, banquets, dinners, and a day-long contest, and Jim Ray Holtz directed the band alongside the committee.
Sutton's Ramblers defeated Riceville 8 to 0 in six innings as Gabe dominated with 14 strikeouts and one walk. Drake homered in the first, Greene connected for a first inning score, and a five run sixth inning sealed the mercy win. Ramblers then blanked Manly 13 to 0 in five innings with Fischer 3 for 4 and Barth homering, before heading to Nora Springs and hosting Rockford next.
The First Presbyterian Church held two infant baptisms during morning worship. Shaun Mary Bixler, daughter of Robert and wife from Rolling Meadows Illinois, was baptized by Rev. G F Butler with her grandfather Paul Cheney assisting. Grant William Eckenrod, son of Jerry and wife from Winona Minnesota, was also baptized. Attendees included grandparents Leonard and Will Cheney and other relatives.
Rev and Mrs George Knutson will attend the annual conference of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches in Grand Rapids Michigan from June 20 to 24.
A dairy barn on the Joe Kyle farm twelve miles southwest of Greene was struck by lightning around 9:40 Saturday night during heavy rain. Firefighters from Aredale and Dougherty contained the blaze to the barn, which housed twenty four cows and equipment. All milk cows were saved. the barn and contents were a total loss due to the fire.
Mr. and Mrs. William Boyd announce the birth of a son named Tyler Burton on June 3 at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Weighing 6 pounds 12 ounces, he joins two year old Billy Joe at home with grandparents B H Boyd of Aredale and John Henning of Greene.
Don Hyers son of Mr and Mrs Earle Hyers of Chicago Illinois earned a B A degree in geography from Elmhurst College He received an assistantship at Western Michigan College Kalamazoo and will work 10 to 15 hours weekly in the lab He is grandson of Mr and Mrs Albert Barth of Greene
