The editor criticizes carnival entertainment and urges citizen duties after low voter turnout in June. It notes concerns over centralized control echoing Khrushchev era tensions and stresses local efforts as best for community progress. It closes with advice that players frustrated during games should not play them.
The Salvation Army launches its annual fund drive to support shelter clothing and food aid and welfare programs led by Greene county committee head M. Kirk Sperry. Letters are mailed requesting contributions to fund health and welfare services and help those in need. Donations may be mailed to treasurer V. K. Barth or Dr. B. V. Andersen.
The Butler County Extension Council and Iowa State University accept the resignation of Francene Winslow effective July 1. She will marry July 3 and teach home economics at Primghar High School next fall. Since 1959 she led a radio spotlight program and restructured the women’s family living program. The 4-H girls program grew to 261 members this year, with 53 more than last year, and Busy Beavers 4-H Club in New Hartford formed under her guidance. The county honored her at Rally Day with a group gift.
Mrs Hardman of Greene attends week long workshop at State University of Town with the theme Books Offer Opportunities to Grow. Sessions are held at the Iowa Center for Continuation Study as part of the ninth annual Library Workshop for Public and School Librarians.
The Red Cross summer program runs June 21 to August 2 with 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. sessions. Buses depart Perrin Park by 8:15 a.m. Participants must be at least 7, bring a suit, towel, parent permission, and a 35 cent registration fee. Chaperone calls to Mrs Jim Drake. Lifesaving classes begin June 24 for seven weeks and require students to provide their own transportation.

Mr and Mrs Thomas Stanton along with Jennifer and Tracy of Alamogordo New Mexico left Saturday for home after spending a week with his parents Mr and Mrs A L Stanton in Alamogordo New Mexico
Glade Heichel of Greene and two companions Ewing Miller and Douglas Marsh escaped injury after a one car crash east of Gates Bridge Saturday at 11 30. The 1959 Chevrolet was badly damaged as the car overturned into a ditch after pulling from the shoulder. Dean Vorhes of Greene collided with Wayne Fischer's 1960 Chevrolet Saturday afternoon as Joyce Bliss backed a car from the curb by the Greene Recorder office, causing extensive damage to both vehicles.
Alfred Rognes of Joice was fined ten dollars and four dollars in costs by Justice of Peace Frank Knight for failure to display pro per registration in his court.
Mrs. George Folkerts underwent surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last week and has returned home Tuesday. Mr. Oltman Buss of Dougherty underwent surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Saturday, June 11th.
Dan Busse arrived in Albia Monday morning after a weekend with his family. He began duties as district manager for the United Telephone Company of Iowa in Albia. Busse has 30 years with the firm, previously working in Aplington Newton and New Hampton before moving to Greene in 1950. The family will stay in Greene until housing is secured.
Mr and Mrs E s Shekleton take daughter Joan and friend Marcelle LaMonte of St Paul Minnesota to Chicago. They depart by jet to Lisbon Portugal on Saturday and will tour England Ireland France Spain and Italy northern Africa and the Holy Land before returning August 25.
Mrs Ella McEvoy her sister Mrs Tom Baldwin 79 of Wadena died at a rest home in New Hampton after a stroke. Funeral services were held at 10 00 a m in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Wadena with burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery
Miss Mary Lou Heuer of Bristow and Mr. Wendell Debner of Greene leave for Ypsilanti Michigan with 46 peers from four American Lutheran College programs for a week of intensive training. They will serve congregations nationwide for three to four weeks each, conducting surveys, visits, and youth ministry activities under a paid stipend to offset incidentals. Heuer is Wartburg College senior daughter of Alfred and Mrs. Heuer, while Debner is Wartburg College junior son of Mr. and Mrs. Debner, both seeking Lutheran ministry paths.
Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross is gathering clothing and other items for Chilean victims. Donations can be sent to the chapter treasurer, I. C. Speedy, at Allison.
Greene Little League defeated Rockford 18 to 5 and Nora Springs 12 to 6 to seize first place in the Shell Rock Valley League. Babe Ruth League lost 13 to 10 at Rockford then won 5 to 8 at Nora Springs. Key players included Nettleton, Hagarty, Fischer and Poppe, with Poppe striking out 13 and driving in runs in Nora Springs. League standings follow.
Private Keith Harris leaves Sunday from his parents Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Harris for Cannon Air Force Base New Mexico. He is accompanied by two friends from Wisconsin after a two week leave spent at home.
Chairman Theo J Bauman of the Butler county ASC announces that conservation reserve contracts expiring in 1960 or later are ineligible for extension. Older contracts qualifying for extensions up to 10 years are halted except for tree planting contracts when seedlings are unavailable, which must be extended one year per year. Existing contracts remain in force as originally written.
The Eastern Iowa Metro Plan expands next day mail delivery to over 1,000,000 people across 34 counties with 34 regional centers and five high speed truck routes. New sectional centers in Burlington Cedar Rapids Davenport Decorah Dubuque and Waterloo will streamline dispatch and transit to ensure next day delivery, barring rare errors.
Rev. John Maret to speak at the Curlew Iowa Baptist Church Sunday at 8:00 p.m. He will show slides on Gospel preaching in France and describe his escape during German occupation. Marot, raised in Paris, has lived in the United States over eleven years with wife Mrs. Marot and three daughters and plans to sail for France soon to engage in ministry.
Airman First Class Dale Kaiser, stationed at Fortland Air Base near Springfield Missouri, is transferred to a base near Anchorage Alaska after a 25 day furlough with parents in Charles City. Mrs Kaiser and two children will join him once housing is found, as his wife and family traveled to Minneapolis to see him depart.
The Perrin Park playground starts Monday June 20 with activities daily 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM Monday through Thursday for a week. Miss Robin Boller supervises crafts and games for children who completed kindergarten last year. A permit slip is required the first day and volunteers are welcome through the Woman's Club.
The 8 9 year old and 10 11 year old Cub Scouts and Webelos will play the Allison Cub Scouts on Saturday June 18. Meet at the Drakle building at 9 00 a m sharp. They will leave for Allison at 9. The eleven year old former Cubs may play.
Theo June announces a family picnic at Round Grove Gou vid Country Club on Thursday evening June 16. Mr and Mrs Frooreis Knapp will chair the committee for the event.
Corine Lindell four month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Galen Lindell came home Sunday from Park Hospital Mason City after a week of treatment for bronchitis.
Mr and Mrs Leonard Davis and their children Lar Joan and Tom from Gass Mills Wisconsin spent the weekend with Mr and Mrs Wilbur Landers and family.
