Ames R J Pooley of Greene tied to the Class of 1910 was honored during Alumni Days at Iowa State University last weekend. He attended the Gold Medal Supper in Memorial Union on Friday June 3 where 1910 alumni received gold medals from the Alumni Association as part of a series of events June 3 to 5 for alumni and their children.
Army PFC Robert L. Schroeder son of Mr and Mrs Herman J Schroeder Greene is training with the 4th Armored Division in Grafenwehr Germany. The exercise aims to boost combat readiness for NATO defense. Schroeder, jeep driver in Headquarters Company Crailsheim, joined December 1958 and arrived overseas last May. He is a 1954 Greene High School graduate and attended Wartburg College. Previously employed by the U S Forest Service Avery Idaho.
A summer typing class for Greene High School students and adults runs June 13 for five weeks, meeting Monday to Friday 9:00 am to 12 noon. Space remains. contact Mr. Stephenson or Mr. Bachman. A $5 fee applies. one semester credit may be earned if desired.
The Murphy family in Clinton attended Mount St. Clare's 67th commencement on June 2 with Sharon Murphy earning a two year college degree and Sheila Murphy finishing high school. Sharon, a scholarship student, engaged with National Federation of Catholic College Students, College Players, and Phi Theta Kappa while acting in Greek drama. She plans to teach elementary education this fall, while Sheila pursues nurse training.
The Youth Center will be open on Saturday nights beginning Saturday June 11 until hot and humid weather ends the sessions.
James Magneson aged 18 of Charles City pleaded guilty in district court on May 26 to larceny of a motor vehicle. Judge Boynton gave ten years in the Men's Reformatory at Anamosa. Magneson and two accomplices were linked to two auto thefts in Butler and Floyd Counties. Sheriff Pete Boomgarden transported him to Anamosa on May 27.
Charies L. Nichol of Greene was among 150 seniors graduating from Wartburg College on June 7 earning a Bachelor of Arts with a physical education major. Nichol is the son of Mr and Mrs Leo Nichol Greene. Dr Martin Marty, associate editor of The Christian Century, delivered the address titled The Time of Your Life.

Miss Ann Wolf, Iowa Dairy Princess, will crown the 1960 Butler County Dairy Princess at Clarksville on June 11 during the afternoon program. Events run June 10 11 with judging at Clarksville High School, parade, 4 H dairy booths, a band concert, a dairy speaker from Iowa State University, and crowning of the county princess by Miss Wolf.
The Greene Community School auditorium hosted the Girl Scout Court of Awards last Wednesday evening. Troop 265 presented the program with colors, pledge, and a sequence of badge and proficiency recognitions led by Opal Worley. Senior scouts from Charles City showed National Roundup slides, as officers and leaders of Troop 265 were announced.
In Butler County primary results incumbents prevailed as Norman Erbe and Edward J. McManus earned their party nominations for governor. Local turnout was light with only about 2,573 ballots cast, while county offices saw strong showings for Schneiderman and DeBower in treasurer contests.
The Greene Little League defeated Marble Rock 9 to 4 and Rudd 7 to 6, with Tom Hagarty Jerry Fischer and Jim Drake delivering key hits and Fischer, on debut as pitcher, contributing a solid outing. Babe Ruth League tied Marble Rock 6 to 6 in a suspended game and then lost to Rudd 8 to 5, as Eddie Johnson led Greene with three hits and two runs while Butch Spratt and others pitched in. The Marble Rock game faced a transformer outage ending play early for the Babe Ruth contest, to be completed June 20 at Greene.
Butler County's 1959 crop loans show corn 1,527,249 bushels under price support as of May 31, with last year at 1,175,924. Nationally 463 million bushels of 1959 corn under price support as of end April, up from 349 million in 1958. Butler also lists 38,780 bushels soybeans and 7,320 bushels oats under loan or purchase agreement as of April 30, 1960.
In hospital Mrs Merlyn Pars was admitted to the Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City Lit Thursday for treatment.
Butler County Butter Soil Conservation District and Grain Dealers of Iowa sponsor a Queen of Conservation contest judged at the Butler County Fair. Each grain dealer sponsors two candidates, with district winners going to the regional contest and rewards including a wrist watch for regional winners and a $250 wardrobe for the state winner.
Special practice coached by Jerry Brimers for all 8 and 9 year old boys aiming to join the Tuesday night local league. The session is on Thursday, June 9 at 1 29 p m. The local league opens June 14 with the first game at 6 45 p m.
Mrs. Jee Holzschuh and Andrea of Wishram Washington visited Friday with her mother Mrs Harold Stuntz and other relatives here and with Mr Holzschuhs parents at Clarksville. They visited Ted Bedell and Julia in Minneapolis en route to Greene.
Paul Grendler son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler leaves New York June 10 for Paris and a Europe trip visiting France Italy and Germany before attending a six week summer school at the University of Vienna on a scholarship. He returns Sept 7 and resumes studies at the University of Wisconsin toward a Master of Arts and PhD work with a teaching assistantship in history.
The Junior Legion Baseball team will hold its first practice to get organized on Wednesday June 5 at 6 00 p m on the local diamond. The game schedule will be published in next week’s issue.
Two Marion and Charles City residents faced fines for traffic violations. Arthur Raymon Lyons expired license incurred a $10.00 fine and $4.00 costs. Ralph Chester Wilcox paid a $10.00 fine and $5.00 costs for a stop sign violation.
Challenge Board standings for Round Grove Golf and Country Club list Don Bachman, Chuck Teeple, Dale Willey, Vern Gard, Clyde Stuntz, Oscar Bartels, Bud Hamilton, Jim Drake among others. The results from last week include Bachman defeating Teeple and Bartels, Willey defeating Gard, Stuntz defeating Bartels and Drake, with Bud Hamilton over Bachman.
The Church of Christ will host a one week Bible School focusing on the teachings of Jesus. It runs Monday through Friday with morning sessions from 9:00 to 11:45 and afternoon classes 1:00 to 3:44. Students may go home for lunch between 11:45 am and 1:00 pm.
