The Mid States Racing Association will hold speed boat races here on Saturday July 4. Last year the event drew a large state crowd and this year over 40 boats from three states are expected to compete in runabouts and hydros. Nationally known drivers will chase points and top finishers win valuable prizes. details to follow in the Recorder.
Paul Grendler, son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler of Greene, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College in Oberlin Ohio. A history major, he studied piano at the Conservatory of Music and will attend Oberlin for German. He will enter the University of Wisconsin in September for a Master's degree, aided by a $350 scholarship from the History Department.
Butler County farmers sign 31 conservation reserve contracts totaling 2,527.5 acres for 1959, shifting cropland to trees, grass, water, or wildlife uses. County ASC chairman Theo J. Bauman says the program, lasting up to 10 years, adds to statewide totals of 6,300 contracts covering over 500,000 acres.
Alvin Koeneman was ordained Sunday at Zion Lutheran Church in Oshkosh Wisconsin. Mgr and Mrs Kenneth Jackson and their daughter Linda joined by Sally Bartels and Maureen Allison attended with Alvin's parents Mr and Mrs Bert Koeneman of Omro Wisconsin. The Koenemans planned to move to San Diego in mid August where he will lead a new Lutheran parish.
Butler County Pee Wee and Midget teams announce season start for June 19 with games in Greene Allison Clarksville Shell Rock and Perrin Park practice set for June 15. Pee Wees age eight to twelve or seventh graders eligible. Midgets 13 to 15. Francis Grendler aids coaching. Tuesday night league play begins 6:30 with under lights.
A stag supper is planned at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Tuesday evening June 16. Funeral services for Mrs George Johnson were held Thursday at Williams Mortuary at 1 PM with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery Brooklyn She was born August 5 1880 in Brooklyn to Joe and Ceila Gritsch and married George Johnson July 25 1900 in Brooklyn This is a correction from last week’s issue.
The park summer playground opens Monday June 15 at 1 30 pm with all children allowed to attend. No river or wading pool supervision. Softball teams, tournaments, dancing and skill games planned. Craft tables begin at 2 pm with crafts up to 10 cents. Assistants named and advanced crafts available for junior high students. Red Cross swimming students may register at the park.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club has hired Golf Pro Leo Fisher to provide free instruction starting Monday June 15. All young members in grades 6 to 12 should attend at 9:00 a.m. They will be split into two experience-based groups, each receiving one hour of guidance weekly for the rest of the season.

The Junior Legion Baseball team defeated Nashua 20 to 8 on Tuesday evening to start the summer season. Greene drove in seven in the first inning and added five in the second and eight in the third as Nashua used four pitchers and issued 17 walks. Doug Marsh started for the locals but struggled, allowing five runs in the second before Gabe finished the inning. Larry Gabe led with two hits in three at bats, while Marsh Barth Latch and Bruns each had one hit. Next practice is Tuesday June 16 at 7:00 p.m.
New residents Mr and Mrs Roger Kingery welcomed a son named Mark Allen born Thursday June 4 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds Rev and Mrs Robert Floy welcomed a son named Timothy William born Tuesday June 9 at Cedar The newborn weighed 10 pounds 4 ounces. Rev Floyd serves Wil mar Lutheran Church Airman Second Class and Mrs Erwin Oltmann of Bunker Hill Air Force Base Indiana are parents of a son named Jeffery Dale born June 6 weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs John Oliman Allison and Mr and Mrs Fred Feldman Greene.
Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stewart and family attended the funeral Sunday in Fayette for Daniel ten year old son of Mr and Mrs Gaylor. Daniel drowned Thursday afternoon while wading in a creek on the farm. Heavy rains had deepened holes in the creek.
Butler County Historical Society schedules a Sunday tour of northern county historic spots with multiple stops to hear local facts. A pre tour cooperative event precedes the war, and a noon picnic at the Allison picnic grounds near the courthouse invites all members and families to bring covered dishes and own table service. The outing follows the dinner.

Ronald Emil Steere was picked up by Deputy Marvin Barth last Saturday and paid 15 dollars plus costs for a noisy muffler in Justice of Peace Frank Knight’s Court. James Herbert Barth paid 25 dollars and costs for Reckless Driving in the same court. The patrolman notes the license is now suspended. Fred Fowler paid 2 dollars and costs on June 1 for speeding on Second Street. Larry Gabe was summoned Saturday by Sheriff R C McCartney of Charles City for improper passing south of Roseville, appeared in Charles City Justice Court, and paid 1850 total fines and costs.
Loretta Miller led the ladies with a 169 high single while Margaret Schultz posted 435 for the high series. Don Gersema led men with a 213 high single and Galen Miller had 530 for the high series as Pin Busters and Lucky Strikes faced tough splits and team matchups.

Visiting parents Major and Mrs Glenn Swedlund Lindy and Ricky of Falls Church Virginia came last Wednesday to visit her parents Mr and Mrs Herman Schroeder. They are en route to Portland Oregon where he will be stationed. Mrs Archie Brett Jr and Judy David Diane and Joe visited Friday at the Schroeders home.
The Public Library adds titles by Gramery Par Mrs Van Wie Brooks and Muss Read. The works recount memories and village life, including a Baptist circuit rider at turn of the century and a Fairacre homefront tale resisting an atomic project housing plan.
Butler County dairy promotion committee and Greene Commercial Club sponsor a County Dairy Day Festival in Greene on June 27 with parade at 1 30 pm, speaker on dairying at 2 pm, dairy princess crowning at 2 30 pm, and a dairy sampler from 2 45 to 3 30 pm for the public.
King R. Palmer states Iowa holds over 1.5 billion dollars in current value of U S savings bonds. Since 1941 Series E and 1952 Series H bonds were issued, Iowans have invested about 2.69 billion dollars. Palmer notes high retention and accrued interest drive value, comparing bond reserves to 1940 bank deposits and noting growth versus deposits. Allison volunteer chair John McWhirter is told Butler County sales reach 17.06 million with uncashed bonds valued at 9.55 million.

Dayton Mather reports the Maxwell house in Greene sold to C. D. Alexander of Marble Rock and the Lawrence Hoffert farm transferred to Orville Reed.
Butler county farmers increasingly use the federal Agricultural Conservation Program to improve soil and water resources. A. C. Bauman reports 452 farms completed conservation work in 1958 and 174 requests were filed in 1959. The program shares costs for practices including limestone treatment, ponds, sod waterways, dams, drainage tiles, contour farming, and more.
Red Cross swimming classes run from Tuesday June 16 through July 28 at PerVin Park. Children must arrive by 9 00 am for bus transport to 1 900 o clock classes at Charles City Municipal Pool. Parents must provide written permission and a 35 cent fee daily for bus drivers. Each child brings a towel and prior certificate to classify level.
Charles Ewes returned home from the Veterans hospital in Des Moines last Friday and will go back Sunday, June 14, for further treatment. Edward Tolliver of Mason City, formerly of Greene, is recuperating at Mercy Hospital there after a heart attack on May 31.
