Carol Tatum the valedictorian and Darlys Smith the salutatorian head the fifty five member Greene Community High School graduating class of 1959. Carol held a 1.063 grade average with A and B grades, active in vocal music band and basketball, and will study elementary education at Town State Teachers College. Darlys posted a 1.093 average with 29 A’s and 3 B’s, active in vocal music and Towes annual staff, and will attend Luther College Decorah on a scholarship.
The Tocal Public Library launches its summer reading program with the slogan Lets Read During Vacation New books plus old favorites will fill the shelves Kids can join by registering at the library and receive a progress card and stickers for tracking reading hours
Winners of the senior popularity contest at Hamiltons Furniture are David Botterbrodt who earned a college scholarship, Robin Boller who received a ladies watch, and Don Menken who won a man's watch.
Vacation Bible School at Church of Christ runs June 8 to 12 with two sessions daily. Morning 9 to 11 45, afternoon 1 to 3 45. Theme Following Jesus features 99 leaders as followers. Co directors Mrs Dexter Alexander and Mrs Ira Thomas oversee songs, flannelgraph and lessons with various classes from Nursery to Teenagers and lunch supervision by Mrs Ellis Bammann.
The Hoof Beats Drill Team will meet at Aaron Jewell's home on Friday June 5 at 6:00 p.m. All current and prospective members are invited to attend the meeting despite the short notice.
A dance will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Wednesday evening June 10. Music will be provided by Glenn Riggins and orchestra. Committee members include Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Marsh, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Stunt, Mr. and Mrs Norman Wolters, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stubbe.
Mrs. Geo Johnson 78 died at home on North Second Street Greene after a long illness. Born August 25, 1880 in Brooklyn, she married George Johnson July 23, 1900 in Brooklyn. They moved to Greene 44 years ago and farmed east of town then to Greene eight years ago. Survived by husband, two sons Basil Greene and Alvin Grinnell, daughter Grace Steere Greene, 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Funeral Thursday at 1:00 PM Williams Mortuary with burial at Odd Fellows cemetery in Brooklyn conducted by Rev Clayton Becker.
Evelyn Behnke and Gertie Marsh each rolled 171 for high singles while Barb ara Stock totaled 501 with 171 161 and 169. Galen Miller led with 219 and 210 and a 609 series. Pin Busters Lucky Strikes Twenty Four Splits Wood Choppers Coldwater Crows share results.
Cub Scouts announce a cook out for Saturday June 6 meeting at the Buchholz and Dralle corner at 9 30 am. They should bring enough food for one meal and will return to Greene about 3 30 pm.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club will hold an invitational on Sunday June 14. Entries are limited to 112 and will be accepted until 10:00 am the day of the tournament. Starting times will be assigned as entries arrive. Prizes include one per four entrants plus championship medalist and hole prizes. Dale Willey handles entries.
Larry Springer, professional dancer and instructor, presents his students in the annual spring revue Circus Time at the Charles City High School Auditorium on Saturday evening June 6 at 8:00. The program features tap acrobatic ballet toe modern jazz and vaudeville acts with stage decorations costumes lighting and makeup. About twelve Greene students will be featured in the cast.
Twenty one Iowa State College students share $300 scholarships for 1959 60. Lynne Johnson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm Johnson, is among fourteen receiving George W Catt scholarships. Selection followed dean recommendations based on scholarship and need. Recipients will be seniors in the fall.
Cecil W Starkweather proclaims June 1 to 7 as Vehicle Safety-Check Week urging citizens to join a safety circle. A Safety-Check lane will operate Saturday June 6 from 1:00 to 6:00 a.m. between the Light Plant and the Creamery, with public information efforts by traffic groups and schools.
Greene Community School system awards top students on Promotion Day. Senior class leaders Darlyl Smith and Jeanette Wirth head the list with straight A averages, followed by Don Van Dyke and Linda Jackson. Juniors, sophomores, and other honorees, including Carly Crosby and Steven Bottler, also receive high marks and awards.
Relatives and friends aided Beguelin family farm while Mr. Beguelin was in Denver Colorado. Sixty acres of corn and beans were planted with multiple helpers including Bud Braydon Clyde Skillen Glen Skillen Walter Wilke and Oscar Chapman. Additional workers planted beans with attendees named Mather Dre Weiland Miller and Anderson.
Mr and Mrs from Spokane and their son M Bethke of Minnesota along with Miss Ruth Bethke from Rochester Minnesota arrived for a weekend visit at the home of Mrs J Bethke in town.
Mrs. Lillie Bremsma has returned home after a five month visit with her son Darrell in Cathedral City and Lake Tahoe California.
John Deines is to be ordained as a Lutheran minister with a service at 7 PM and a covered dish dinner at noon in the church parlors. A reception follows at his parents’ home from 2 PM to 5 PM. relatives Dana and Jon a note of honor. Public invitation extended.
One hundred four bicycles were licensed and inspected by the Box Scouts of Greene. Leonard Nichol announced that any youngster without a bicycle inspection could come to his home on Monday evenings in June to have their bike inspected and receive a license.
Galen W Hesalroad appointed to the Veterans Administration in Washington DC as an advisory board staff member handling appealed construction contractor claims in Butler County. He and his daughter plan to move to Arlington VA in September. Jeanette Wirth received the Orion Award. The Apollo Club issued instrumental music awards to many students, with year levels and names listed. Arlene Bray gave the American Award to Craig Burroughs. Charles Palmer Davis Medal to Daryl Shock. and other academic and vocational awards were announced for numerous students including Mary Boller, Linda Busse, Bruce Mead, and Don Menken. page continues with more awards and names.
Butler Soil Conservation District Commissioners approved four more requests for conservation assistance at their recent meeting. Hugh Scallon of Ackley cited George Busch and his 200 acre West Point Township farm needing contour farming and tiling. Fred Bruns seeks aid for his 240 acre farm in Madison Township. Additional discussion touched on the Gar farm and tenant arrangements in the same area.
A club breakfast will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club next Sunday morning June 7 from 7:35 to 9:30 am. The event lists attendees including Clyde Andersen Jim Stuntz and J rold Allison.
In a Cedar-Wapsie League entry, three area teams Ville Greene and Marble Rock join New Hampton Ionia North Washinakes City and Nashua. The schedule lists dates June 14 18 July 2 and a two day tournament with regular league games starting at 6:00 pm.
New residents Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Miller of Bristow welcome a son born May 30 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. He weighs 9 pounds 3 ounces and is named Mark Vernon. Mrs. Miller was formerly Janice Allan.
Several defendants faced fines after driving charges. Ralph McCready and Anthony Nierling appeared in court with fines set at 10 dollars and 50 dollars plus costs. May 25 was noted for court action, and a filing by Pat was recorded with additional costs.
Carol Demes will be honored Friday as she receives a cap in a formal ceremony. Local officials and teammates will attend to recognize her achievements and milestone.
Friday practice for Duane A to Jerr. Baseball team tied after practice. Those interested should attend the first session. The first contest is Tuesday. June on Greene hosts Nashua Junior Legion.
Rept Gl Butler County at a Third Republican dinner and meeting held in Waverly on May 27 elected Bill Henke of Charles City as Third District chairman. He succeeds Paul Smith of Tama County who led the district for five years.
