Mrs C G Starkweather returned home Monday from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City where she was treated for a triple fracture of the right leg above the ankle. The injury occurred in a bicycle accident Thursday and her leg is now in a cast.
The Greene Public Library invites children from second grade to elementary level with a library card to join the summer reading club titled Tall Paul. Registration is open and the program runs through vacation months with new children's titles including The Case of the Cats Meow and Mystery of the Dinosaur Bones.
The annual Youth Golf Tournament for boys and girls will be held at the Country Club on Monday, June 14. Classes include Pee Wee up to grade 6, junior for grades 7-9, and senior for grades 10-12, grouped by last year’s grades. Participants should arrive by 1:00 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in every age group.
Larry J. Kester of St Ansgar charged with speeding paid 15.00 fine and 4.00 costs. Frank S. Nelson of Cedar Falls Walter B. Janssen of Nora Springs Gerald W. The Iowa State Tax Commission reported quarter ending December 31 1984 sales and use tax from Butler County retailers. Greene topped with 70 returns and 20234.32, Allison next with 4417 169.32, Parkersburg third with 15371.02, plus totals for Clarksville Aplington Dumont Shell Rock New Hartford and smaller segments including rural businesses and non permit. Consumer use tax totaled 1420.37 and motor vehicles use tax 14508.99.
Larry Gabe son of Mr and Mrs Leo Gabe was named to the all North Central College Conference baseball team. A .444 hitter for State College of Iowa he played first base but moved to third on the all conference squad due to three NCC first basemen. He also received a varsity letter. Athletic director Dr James Witham announced after faculty athletic board confirmation.
Richard E Witwer and Jane Witwer travel to Omaha Nebraska as grandfather S E Witwer suffers serious illness. He dies at 97 with funeral services planned for this afternoon in Onawa Iowa.
Army Private First Class Ronald J. Niehaus son of Mr and Mrs Carl H Niehaus of Greene joined Allied military police to manage traffic and spectators in Berlin during Queen Elizabeth II s visit first state visit by a British monarch since 1909. Niehaus assigned to 287th Military Police Company arrived overseas July 1964 after enlisting September 1963 and a Clarksville High School graduate.

Norman Mielke Jr of Greene, a Greene Community School teacher, was selected to receive a full grant to join a nationwide French institute at Coe College Cedar Rapids. Forty eight high school French teachers from 16 states will attend starting June 16. Institute director David Gobert noted the program trains language teachers without pulling them from classrooms.
New resident couple Mr and Mrs Tom Kline announce the birth of daughter Brenda Jane on Saturday June 5 at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City. The infant weighed 8 pounds and has a two year old brother Bradley Jay. Mrs Kline is the former Linda Busse daughter of Mr and Mrs Dan Busse of Tipton.
Extension entomologist David Mick of Iowa State University will lead a training session in Butler County on Wednesday June 16 at 9:30 am at the Wilbur Huisinga farm near Aplington. The program helps farmers identify and evaluate corn rootworm damage and discuss organophosphorus insecticides for control before month end.
Tom Hagarty drove in four Rambler runs with a homer and a double as Ramblers toppled Riceville 6 to 5. Greene defeated Aceville 53 to 4 while Mark Ott pitched for the Ramblers, fanning 10 as Greene stopped Riceville’s offense. Hagarty’s homer capped a key rally in the sixth, and Sutton used smart small ball to pull ahead. The Rambler schedule lists games through late June including Manly Nora Springs Rockford St Ansgar and Riceville.
Clark Moser underwent major surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City on Tuesday.
Two workshops for beginning county public welfare workers are set for June in Des Moines by the State Department of Social Welfare. Mrs Irene M Smith of the State Board says the sessions help workers understand their responsibilities to federal, state and county governments. The three day program directed by Gerald Evans with helpers Mrs J On Hamelster and Lloyd Remer will train thirteen workers from eleven counties, including Donald H Claussen of Butler County.
Mr and Mrs George Conroy of Redding California visit Dr J P Hoeben home. Mrs Conroy and Mrs Hoeben are sisters.
The Little Leaguers beat Babe Ruth 7 to 4 while Babe Ruth won 4 to 1 over Rudd in a split series. Little Leaguers started strong with a five-run first inning and coasted to victory behind Jerry Shultz on the mound. Dan Elms, Kent Jacobson, and others contributed timely hits as Greene and Pyatt sparked multi-run innings. Babe Ruth opened with a 4 to 1 win over Rudd, defending their 1964 title.
The Greene Commercial Club meets at the Community Center this evening at 7 30. Members will discuss summer promotions and other business. All members are urged to attend.
Gordon Wood, a serviceman at S. D. Pooley Lumber Company, attended the Frigidaire Service School at the General Motors Training Center in Hinsdale Illinois on Monday and Tuesday of this week.
Greene Community Schools reports 39 fourth graders joined the beginner band. Ray Holtz credits a two month trial rental plan and engaged parents for the program's success. Summer instruction is free with weekly lessons, progressing toward the fall regular band. List of fourth graders includes Rosanne Needham and Susan Holtz on flute, Bradley Davis on sax, and Craig Folkerts among others.
Calvary Baptist Church marks twenty years with a week of nightly services from Sunday June 13 through Sunday June 20. Rev. Leo Sandgren, former First Baptist Austin Minnesota pastor now living in Tacoma Washington, returns to lead the series and will be joined by his wife in song. Evening services begin at 8 00 p m with special observances set for June 20 and an open invitation to the public.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Thomason and family attended Colfax boat races on Sunday as Terry Thomason raced in several events. He placed first and second in B Utility, fourth in B Hydro, third in A Hydro, and second and third in A Utility.
The third Butler County Summer School starts June 14 at Allison-Bristow High School with art, field biology, and English courses. An all day field trip to Minneapolis on July 16 is planned for art and English, including Welker Art Center and a Guthrie Theatre performance. Courses feature instructors Mrs. Peter Brown, Gene Olson, Erna Moehle, and Robert Van Dyne, with Greene students among sixty-seven attendees.
Relatives in Greene learned of the accidental death of Mrs. Letha Berry Meader at her Tucson home. Daughter of Bert Berry and Dora Crosby, she is survived by her husband, a daughter, her mother, one brother, and three sisters. Funeral services are held today at a Newton funeral home.
The State Conservation Commission will stock about 90 000 large mouth bass fry in 325 farm ponds by week’s end. Fry are shipped to pond owners in water filled bags from Lake Wapello and Mount Ayr hatcheries. In many ponds fishing starts about a year after stocking, varies with pond conditions. Over 20 years the commission has stocked more than 4800 ponds.
Mr and Mrs Marion Woodling of Chico California arrive for a visit at the home of his mother Mrs Florence Woodling.
The annual Ladies City Golf Tournament will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on June 16. Coffee for golfers at 8 15 a.m. tee-off at 9. A catered luncheon from 11 30 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by bridge. Trophies and prizes for golf and bridge. Reservations for luncheon due by June 11 with Mrs Harry Ott.
Marvin Moser of Greene placed first in the opening heat and in a semi main event at the Nashua stock car oval on Saturday evening. He finished eighth in the feature race.
Airman 2nd Class Michael Brinsma stationed at Kingsley Field in Klamath Falls Oregon is on a three week furlough visiting his parents Mr and Mrs B G Brunsma Marcus Boller of Indianapolis Indiana spent several days of vacation with his brother and sister in law Mr and Mrs Carlton Boller and visited relatives at Calmar
A teen hop will be held at the Country Club next Friday June 11 from 8 30 to 11 30. Roger Burk a disk jockey from KWWL will be present. Chaperones include Mr and Mrs Jim Drake Mr and Mrs Max Weyand Mr and Mrs Vern Rottler Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh and Mr and Mrs Dean Ott. Regular Youth Center rules will apply.
Mr and Mrs Randall Jones attended the First Iowa Inventors Congress in Waterloo held in June. The event, sponsored by the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce and the Iowa Development Commission, displayed over 100 new inventions from five states including the Jet-Aur-Sweatr tempering tank for bathroom sweating. The Hawkeye Inventors of Iowa association was formed, with officers elected for one year and three directors including Randall Jones from North Iowa.
