Greene High Band Boost After History Lesson on WHO

The Greene High School Stage Band under director Ray Holtz received high praise after Lee Kline featured them on the WHO Farmorama program. Kline presented the band's history and played Ruby from their album, signaling Greene’s growing musical prestige under Holtz.

Royal Neighbors To Hold Convention

The Royal Neighbors of America will hold their annual district convention on Tuesday June 8 at Greene Community School with Powersville hosting. The district includes Floyd Howard Mitchell Winneshiek Allamakee and Chickasaw counties. Registration 1230 to 1300 p m. Banquet 530 p m Presbyterian Church. Ann Rottler and Douglas Walker Win Golf Tournament

In Round Grove Golf and Country Club’s two ball foursome, 29 couples competed Monday afternoon. First place went to Ann Rottler and Douglas Walker with 47. Ties for second included Sam Sneed and Mary May Huber and Bob Curtis and Lucy Curtis at 51. A four way tie for eighth involved Edna Bachmann and Keith Dralle Erma Bartels and Bud Marsh Sadie Davis and Jimmy Dralle and June Hirsh and Lewis Majewski with 52. Erma Bartels and Bud Marsh won the flag hole. Beverly Heidenwirth and Darrell Davis posted the high score. A potluck supper and hamburger fry followed.

Rites Held for Arlene Hemmerich

Arlene Hemmerich 25 died from injuries in a one car crash four and three quarter miles north of Greene. Her husband Walter and two daughters Mary and Bonnie survived. Funeral services were held May 31 at St John’s Lutheran Wilmar with Rev Emmett T Busch. Burial Rose Hill Greene Williams Mortuary handled arrangements.

Robert Shultz to Get Master’s Degree

Robert Shultz son of Mrs. Joe Woods of Greene will receive his Master of Arts degree at the University of Omaha on Monday June 7. He earned a teaching fellowship for doctorate work at Wayne State University Detroit Michigan worth 2600 dollars for the first year and is renewable up to four years. He aims to teach college after his PhD, having graduated with honors in history from the State University of Iowa and been a straight A student at Omaha University.

Navy airman takes 25 day furlough at home

On furlough at home, Electrician Third Class David Osier returns to Miramar Naval Base, California, after spending 25 days with his parents Mr and Mrs Donald Osier. He is scheduled to resume duties at the base in June.

Demo Women Elect New Officers

The Butler County Chapter of the Democratic Women's Club met Monday evening May 24 to elect new officers. Mrs Herb Harken of Aplington resigned as president. Mrs James Spain of Parkersburg elected president. Mrs Spain had been treasurer and Mrs Al Smram of Clarksville was chosen treasurer. Mrs Ben DeBerg of Kesley retained secretary, Mrs Martin Rose of Clarksville named board member, and Mrs Harold Hempen elected auditor. Next meeting at Allison Park June 28 potluck. Little League Opens Thursday Evening In Greene

The Little League and Babe Ruth teams begin league play Thursday with Greene hosting Rudd. The Little League game starts at 6 00 p m and the Babe Ruth contest at 7 30 p m. Greene travels to Nora Springs next Monday June 7. Coach Jerry Eimers has 40 Babe Ruth players and 34 Little League players from the 5th and 6th grades. The Little League seeks its seventh straight league title and the Babe Ruth squad defends last year’s championship after a 17 game win streak. Both teams feature many new faces after losing most of last year’s regulars.

Beginners Band Starts at Greene Community Schools

This summer a new beginning band program for fourth graders offers free lessons on instruments chosen by students. The aim is to recruit at least 35, with aptitude tests already completed. James Gravens Home From Europe

Mr and Mrs James H Graven returned home on Sunday May 23 from a three week vacation in Europe. On May 22 they were dinner guests in Paris with Mr and Mrs Andre Besancon and children Thierry Catherine and Philippe. Mrs Besancon is a daughter of Mrs Genevieve du Jonchay of Greene. They also saw Mr and Mrs Fred Van Dyke of Cedar Rapids at the Swiss Border. the Van Dykes were touring with the Cedar Rapids Chamber of Commerce.
