The Edetor Speates notes Greene school’s annual crop mirrors a very successful season, with graduates and staff commended for their efforts. It mentions Kennedy’s diplomatic influence amid Cold War anxieties and urges leaders to possess strength of character. It also references the broader struggle with communism and calls for prudent decisions in the coming months.
The summer typing course starts next Monday June 12 at Greene High School. Classes run 9 to 12 from Monday through Friday for six weeks with students from seventh grade to high school eligible. Several adults have signed up and ten more places remain. high school students can earn one semester credit for the course.
The Junior Legion baseball season starts Friday June 9 with Greene hosting Aplington at 5 30 p m. Remaining games include June 14 Charles City at 5 30 p m June 16 Gar er night game June 25 Charles City here at 2 30 p m June 27 Aplington there July 2 Sheffield here at 2 30 p m. Bancroft and Dunkerton games to be scheduled later.
The Butler County 4-H club held its Annual Rally Day on Saturday June 3 in Allison with almost 350 participants including girls leaders parents and friends. New County Girls 4-H officers were elected Jane Voigts as president Renee Hagarty as vice president Judy Frey as secretary and Dianne DeBerg as historian. Forty two girls took part in the Better Grooming Revue with senior winners named as Joan Sill Nancy Kaiser Dianne DeBerg and Jane Voigts.
Frank Stoudek of Chicago Illinois and Mrs James Kohout of Western Springs Illinois visited Greene to attend the Greene High School commencement exercises Wednesday evening where Paul Ruzicka was a member of the graduation class. Open house followed at the Ruzicka home with relatives and friends from Marble Rock Nashua Charles City Plymouth Mason City Rockford Allison and Greene in attendance.
The Greene Public Library sponsors a Summer Reading Roundup for children with a cowboy motif. Each child joins a ranch to track books read at their reading level. New children’s books listed include Huge Harold, The Perfect Pancake, The Nicest Time of the Year, and Ride Like an Indian. Dozens more titles and old favorites are available for vacation reading at the library.
Last Saturday evening about 140 young people attended a dance by Roy Chase of KWMT Fort Dodge. The event ran from eight to eleven at the high school auditorium with sponsors Mr and Mrs Robert Fischer and Mr and Mrs Cliff Burroughs.
Greene Fire Department officials announce the move of trucks and equipment into the new building between Launderama and City Hall. Citizens are asked to observe the No Parking area in front, marked in yellow, to keep emergency exits clear for fire fighting vehicles.
Paul F. Grendler, son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler of Greene, received the Master of Arts in History degree at the University of Wisconsin annual commencement in Wisconsin Stadium Madison on Monday June 5.
The Cub Scout Baseball Team meets at the Scout Rooms above Drake's at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, June 10, for two games against Allison, ages 8 9 and 10 11. Drivers are needed. call Bob Shultz to volunteer.
Mrs Al Rodenbeck has returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital where she was a surgical patient.
Wartburg College in Waverly held commencement exercises last Friday June 2 awarding Mrs Ruth Haugenburg a Bachelor of Science in Education and Jim Graven and Larry Voaitgs receiving Bachelor of Arts degrees.
Leila Dott Squires 77 died June 1 at her Bristow home. Born October 23, 1883 near Marble Rock, she taught school and married George Bert Squires in 1905. Survived by husband and son Harold. buried Hillside Cemetery Marble Rock after services in Allison.
Carol Crosby daughter of Mr and Mrs Dale Crosby chosen as Greene's candidate for Miss North Iowa at the North Iowa Band Festival in Mason City on June 13. She plays first clarinet drums majorette in marching band and participates in pep band dance band and mixed chorus. She serves on the annual staff reports for the school newspaper and was class president junior and senior years.
Mace Kammann son of Mr and Mrs Ellis Bammann returned home Tuesday from Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City after undergoing a tonsillectomy on Monday.
Iowa enacts a federal approved boat registration system for all motorboats and those with Coast Guard numbers must obtain Iowa IDs by July 4 1962. Registrants receive a certificate for display and inspections and applications open after June 19 1961 at marinas dealers clubs and county offices with a $4 two year fee.
Mrs. Zon Miller, chairman of the American Cancer Society fund drive, announced Greene collected 476.36 from the recent effort. Twenty-one workers conducted house to house canvases.
The Woman's Club launches a four day a week program from June 19 at Perrin Park or the Community Center in rain. Jeanette Wirth leads crafts while Gerald Eimers and Robert Shultz direct games including baseball. Sessions run 1:30 to 4 with free crafts and small fees for some activities.
Rambler track squads under Norman Bud Wolters earned 89 trophies from 1953 to spring 1961. They set records at Osage Mason City Cedar Falls and Buffalo Center and claimed 32 Mohawk Relay titles along with 2 district team championships and 2 state titles by John Whitehead and Dennis Wunsch.
Marvin Grace son of Mr and Mrs Frank Grace will receive a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at the University of Iowa spring commencement exercises next Friday.
Mr and Mrs Robert Wordmeyer Jr announce the birth of a son at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Saturday June 3. The infant weighed 7 pounds 7 ounces and is named Gregory Allan.

A large crowd attended the high school commencement in the auditorium last Wednesday evening. After the processional and invocation by Rev. D C Fryman, the Class Key was presented to Dallas Steere. The program featured a mixed chorus, a speech by H C Engelbrecht of Wartburg College, and awards by Legion commander J E Van Eschlan and Iowa Bar Association representative Viral Shepard.
Greene fire department hosts an open house at the new Fire Station next Sunday June 11 from 2 to 4 PM. Residents are invited to tour the building and equipment as coffee and donuts are served.
A buffet breakfast will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Sunday June 11 from 7:00 to 9:30 am. Those on the serving committee include Messieurs and Mesdames Martin Senne Jim Drakle Bob Neal Galen Lindell Graydon Anderson Vern Thompson Darrell Davis Francis Knapp and Jim Schroeder.
Greene Little League and Babe Ruth hosts Marble Rock in season opener. Greene teams win 12 5 and 17 4 as Tom Hagarty slams a three run homer and Jeff Drake hits a triple. Steve Clapham and Jerry Fischer combine on the mound in Greene win. Schedule shows a summer tour through Floyd Rockford Marble Rock Nora Springs Rudd and a Rockford tournament.
Greene Community High School juniors Dallas Steere and Paul Burroughs were selected to attend Hawkeye Boys State at Camp Dodge Des Moines this week. Steere, son of Grace Steere, led the junior class, acted in the class play, worked on the annual editorial staff, and played football and track. Burroughs, son of Mr and Mrs C E Burroughs, participated in debate football basketball and track. They are sponsored by the local American Legion post and Veterans Club.
Mr and Mrs J B Hardy attended a baptism Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church in Algona. Twins Joan Sileen and Julia Ann, daughters of Mr and Mrs Rich Burt, were baptized. it was the church's first baptismal service. Mrs Burt formerly Philis Hardy of Greene.
Larry Lester son of Mr and Mrs Donald Lester had major surgery Monday at Codiz Valley Hospital in Charles City and is expected to return home today.
