Editors vent about unseasonal weather as June arrives with cold winds and rain while joking about calendars, snow gear, and July riots. The piece also notes veterans, including P C Peck, with ties to Lawler Legion and a Greene dental practice. Doc Peck spends winters in Arizona visiting his daughter and enjoys dancing.
Teeters, H. D., was admitted to the hospital this morning for unspecified medical evaluation. Details on diagnosis or treatment were not disclosed.
Winners at the K and W Car Wash Grand Opening drawing last weekend included adults T. V., C. S. Kaiser, Myron Nelson, Paul Knox, John Hardman, Lloyd Stauffer, and Tom Dailey for a dust cloth and lawn feed. Children’s prizes went to Tom Leavens, Liz Reid, Brad Foster, and Rae Jean Lauber, all receiving fire chief hats.
Calvary Baptist Church announces a five day Vacation Bible School from June 9 to 13 with daily sessions 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Four classes run by Karen Schmidt Shirley Butler Mildred McElroy and Leona Morey. Includes choruses Bible stories memory work and handcraft. picnic Friday noon. closing program Sunday June 15 at 7 30 p.m. for the public.
The book Why Me by William Gargan was presented to Greene Library by Mrs. Andrew Reid, Butler County Memorials chairman for the American Cancer Society. The work chronicles Gargan's battle with throat cancer and laryngectomy and his ongoing effort to aid patients facing similar afflictions.
Babbette E Christiansen Bonita G Neal and Dennis L Tack were among a record 921 degree candidates at the University of Northern Town commencement on May 29. Babbette earned a BA in Art Bonita a BA in Lower Elementary Education and Dennis a BA in Mathematics with honors.
Neighbors helped Bill Kline by dishing cornstalks, fertilizing, plowing, and planting 150 acres of corn last week. Kline recently suffered a heart attack. Helpers included Karl Zimmerman, Andy Weiss, Stanley Roose, Gary Mec Williams, Dennis McWilliams, Walter Wilkie, Paul Butler, Wilma Reed, and Kline’s sons Jim and Tom who took vacation time. Food was provided by Mrs. Gary McWilliams and Morey’s Food Market. The weather was good and the work finished an hour before rain on Saturday.
The Little League team edged Rudd 7 to 6 in 40 degree weather as Rudd built early leads but Greene tied it, then pulled ahead with a 4th inning rally. The Babe Ruth team routed its opponent in five innings under the 10 run rule, aided by Bryan Trees triple and Dave Eimers on the mound with eight strikeouts. Thursday the teams travel to Nora Springs then host Marble Rock on Monday.
Diane Barnhart and Carolyn Wolf, daughters of Mr and Mrs Dwight Barnhart and Mr and Mrs Paul Wolf, graduated from Wartburg College as part of a record class of 315 seniors. Seventy three earned Bachelor of Science in Education degrees and Diane and Carolyn each received a BSE.

Mrs. Fred Hauser 78 died early Monday May 26 after months of ill health. Born Amelia Litterer September 12 1890 in Floyd County she married Fred Hauser February 25 1915 and was active in St. Johns UCC and Womens Fellowship. Survived by two daughters four sons and twenty one grandchildren. interment in church cemetery. Chenoweth and Son Funeral Directors.

The First State Bank won 35 dollars in squad money at the National Bowling Tournament in Madison Wisconsin. Nordmeyer Construction earned zero in squad money. Jim McLennan and Elmer Stock had the second highest single game with a 514 score and shared a purse of over 200 dollars.
Steven Rottler son of Mr and Mrs Vern Rottler has an honorable discharge from the U S Army. He and his wife will live in Greene this summer where Steven will work with his father in the farm operation.
Lewis Swant 86 of Marble Rock died Tuesday June 3 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital He was born in Oakwood to Ludwig and Albertina Swant and farmed the area Survivors include two sons Cecil Marble Rock and Harold Greene a granddaughter and 3 great grandchildren Services set for Friday June 6 at 1 30 p m at the United Methodist Church Marble Rock with Rev Byron Ayers officiating Burial in Westside Cemetery Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge

Gary Debner 17, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Debner, has been chosen to attend Hoy's State at Camp Dodge near Des Moines June 1 to 7. Sponsored by the American Legion, he plays football basketball and track and has won the Decathlon Trophy in track. He leads in mixed chorus concert band stage band and serves as band president on honor roll. He belongs to St Peter's Lutheran Church and is president of the Luther League.
Mr and Mrs Ken Sutton of State Center are the parents of a 9 pound 6 ounce son born Thursday May 29 at Evangelical Hospital in Marshall town. Timothy Lynn shares a birthday with his father and he is greeted at home by four brothers and a sister.
Twenty two 4H members from Butler and Floyd County will travel to Iowa State University in Ames June 10 for the 1969 4-H Conference. Norval Wardle of Iowa State Extension Safety warns farmers to follow federal and state youth labor laws before hiring youths for farm work. He notes the Hazardous Occupations Order of January 1968 limits underage helpers but allows 14 and 15 year olds to work legally after training and exams, covering most farm tasks in sections 5 through 10 of the ruling.

Air Force Academy cadet Stev en D Barnett, son of Mrs Iva J Barnett, earns the Outstanding Cadet in Aeronautical Engineering Award. He graduates June 4 with a Bachelor of Science and will be commissioned as a second lieutenant. President Nixon speaks at commencement as about 675 officers receive diplomas.
Commencement exercises last Wednesday May 2 for the Greene Community School class of 1969 honored valedictorian Joyce Hauser and salutatorians Mary Rottler and Ann Hanson. Hauser achieved a 3.971 GPA with 35 credits, led multiple activities, and earned several awards. Rottler and Hanson each earned 3.800 GPAs with 35 credits and active participation in music, sports, and student government. Scholarships were awarded to Terri Rutz and Myrna Landers, while Danforth Foundation honors went to Joyce Hauser and Wendell Stantz. Doug Trees received the High School All-American Wrestling Award. he and another student earned the national honor.
Diane Stauffer, daughter of Mr and Mrs Lyle Stauffer, serves on NIACC committees which raised over 600 for the Scholarship for a Handicapped Person. Major gifts came from a March for the Handicapped on Mason City streets and college solicitations, with other events like a slave market and student senate and assembly programs boosting totals to fund a handicapped student’s education at NIACC.
Mrs. Robert Fischer entered Monday for major surgery on Tuesday June 3. Herbert Barnett returned Sunday evening June 2 after major surgery about six weeks earlier and is now in intensive care with no visitors allowed outside the family.
