The editor lauds Dr. L. C. Murray for a standout graduation address praising today’s grads as capable leaders of a brighter national path. L F Bachman, an elementary principal, also delivers a Memorial Day talk urging return to morality and religious faith as a remedy to social problems.
Mr and Mrs William Ekwall of Charles City welcomed a son at 5 00 pm Tuesday May 31 at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital. The baby weighed eight pounds 14 ounces. He is named William Edward. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Gilbert Kuhn of Charles City and Mrs Leola Ekwall of Greene.
Mrs. Sadie Majewski was discharged Friday from Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City after seven weeks as a patient. She is convalescing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Majewski.
Twenty six Iowa State University agriculture students left May 31 for a Europe tour as part of the ISU Agricultural Travel Course. Led by professors Wooley and Warner, the group will study production methods in England and continental Europe with visits to farms, stations and colleges. They will stay with Danish farm families June 17 and 18, and return to Des Moines June 26.
Ensign Clare J. Grendler, son of Mr and Mrs August Grendl er, is promoted to lieutenant junior grade at the Naval Air Force Station in Norfolk Virginia. He is serving aboard the aircraft carrier U S Randolph on reconnaissance along the northwestern European coast with ports planned in Norway the Netherlands Germany Denmark Scotland and Northern Ireland. They expect to return to the United States on September 2.
Butler County Dairy Day activities shift to Greene on Saturday June 25 with a 1 30 parade free dairy refreshments and musical entertainment. A volunteer talent show precedes the Dairy Princess winner announcement and Greene Bucks drawing by the Greene Commercial Club headed by Kenneth Jackson. Entries may come from Butler County or Greene trade area.
Bruce Mead, son of Mr and Mrs Robert Mead, received a bachelor of science in distributed studies at the 95th and 190th annual ISU commencement in Ames. He was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Air Force and will report June 6 at the Orlando Air Base after ROTC training. Mr and Mrs Mead and Miss Fern Bendickson attended the exercises.
Wendell R. Debner son of Mr and Mrs Will H Debner graduated from Luther Theological Seminary St Paul Minnesota on Sunday May 29 Commencement was at Central Lutheran Church Minneapolis at 3 pm Attendees included his parents sister Diane and other relatives He will be ordained at St Johns Lutheran Wilmar on June 26 and take pastor duties at Faith Lutheran Miller in July.
Mrs. Donald McBurney, chair, says the summer playground starts around June 20 with a new schedule including golf, tennis, archery, softball for girls, first aid and safety. Kindergarten through fifth grade will attend one day a week. donations or loaned equipment are welcome at 823-4567.
Mrs. Olive Oglesby 64 of Mason City died in a Tuesday afternoon crash four miles south of Greene on Highway 14. The incident, Butler County’s first highway fatality of the year, involved her northbound car colliding with a southbound Corn Bell Power Co truck driven by 27 year old Myron Card of Hampton. The truck caught fire and was destroyed. Oglesby, co-owner of Oglesby’s Food Shop, is survived by her husband, three sons, a daughter, fifteen grandchildren and a brother. Funeral services were held Friday at the First Methodist Church in Mason City. Mervin Schmidt of Greene attended.
Mrs G E Hamilton leads a piano recital at the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday June Sth at 3 30 pm featuring Lynette Kingery Jolene Kingery Janan Smith Janca Fischer Anne Voigts Jolene Litterer Jane McRoberts and Wendy Martzahn among others.
The Chevy II Rollers men’s bowling team finished tenth in the state event held in Burlington this spring. Over 1,100 teams competed statewide. Members Bob Barth Lloyd Blum Ralph Litterer John Hardman and Darrel Barth rolled 2718 pins including handicap while winner Lucky Lanes of Fort Madison totalled 2820.
Galen Heinkel has been hired by the State Conservation Commission to serve Butler and Franklin counties replacing retiree James Gregory. He and his wife reside at 1408 Central Ave in Hampton and can be reached at 456-2659. Previously from La Verne Iowa he graduated high school there and has spent four years as a conservation officer in Des Moines and Henry counties.
Sheryl Jean Ott daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Ott will receive a bachelor of arts in lower elementary education at Commencement exercises on Friday June 3 at the State College of Town Cedar Falls. Miss Ott plans to teach kindergarten in Ames Public Schools in the fall.
Mitchell E Marsh son of Mr and Mrs Dale Marsh of Dougherty and grandson of Mrs Matte Marsh Greene received a bachelor of science degree in agriculture at Iowa State University Ames on Saturday. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the U S Army and will report for duty at Camp Gordon Georgia in July.
At the Iowan Beef Cattle Day in Afton on June 25 Vernon Stockdale and Kay Connelly will be recognized by the Tawa Beef Improvement Association for pioneering work in Feedlot Performance Evaluation. The event highlights cow calf production cattle feeding and educational resources with about 50 performance tested bulls of Hereford Polled Hereford Angus Charolais and Shorthorn breeds on display.
Summer baseball official kickoff this week features Little Leaguers and Babe Ruth teams traveling to Rudd on Thursday night June 2. The Ramblers head to Rockford on Friday with games at 6 00, 7 30 and 7 00 p.m. Next Monday evening the Little Leagues host Nora Springs and on Tuesday June 7 the Ramblers meet St Ansgar.
Two Greene Community School juniors were selected to attend a week of civic instruction in June. Terrie Rutz will join Girls State at State College of Iowa Cedar Falls, June 6, after notable sports and arts activity and straight A grades, plus a national painting honor. Bruce Burroughs will attend Boys State at Camp Dodge near Des Moines, starting June 5, with basketball and track participation, honor roll status, and a Math pin for 1965-66.
Local merchants sponsor Greene Buck drawings starting June 4 for thirteen weeks at Greene Church of the Brethren. Registration is one time with weekly ticket turn‑in to avoid duplicates. Prizes include 20 and 10 and 5 dollars in Greene Bucks redeemable at Greene merchants.
Scott C Frascht son of Mr and Mrs Russell Frascht has enlisted in the Air Force. He left May 23 for Lackland AFB Texas where he will be stationed. A large neighbor group conducted a Good Neighbor Deed at Mrs Fred Wirth farm last Friday. They used 28 tractors 7 plows 13 discs 2 drags and 4 planters to prepare ground and plant 100 acres of beans and seeded 30 acres of oats. Numerous neighbors assisted with tools fuel food and service.
Mr and Mrs James Gambaiani of Greene are parents to a daughter born Tuesday May 17 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Waverly. The newborn weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce and has been named Gina Marie. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Tony Gambaiani and Mr and Mrs Clyde Mathes of Shell Rock.
The Greene Community swimming pool was dedicated Sunday with Rev G F Butler invoking, James H Graven MC and unveiling a plaque honoring Mrs Etta Buchholz who funded the pool. Guests included Rev Butler Mayor Ramker and Mr and Mrs Frank Barnard of Lutsen Minnesota, first cousins of the late Mrs Buchholz. The Graven family received the pool key as instrumental students led by Ray Holz performed The Star Spangled Banner.
Memorial Sunday service at the local Methodist Church featured American and Christian flags given by Mrs. Alma Heckman in memory of her husband Merle B. Heckman a World War I veteran. Major James Heckman US Air Force in Vietnam and Mrs. Heckman presented the flags to the church as the congregation and choir observed with America the Beautiful.
Dennis Eckhoff son of Mr and Mrs John Eckhoff a Westmar College sophomore in LeMars was among 97 athletes to receive a letter jacket for football. It is his second letter. Winners join the W club whose senior members gain lifetime passes to all Westmar sports events at graduation.
Mr and Mrs Mel Renken of Manson announce the birth of their son Kerris Jenssen on May 13. The newborn weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces. The mother Marian Petersen is daughter of Mrs J H Petersen.
Twenty two Iowa students will receive degrees from the University of Notre Dame at Notre Dame Indiana during commencement exercises next Sunday June Sth at 2 00 p m Barbara Ward the influential British economist and author will be the commencement speaker and His Eminence Juan Cardinal Landazuri Ricketts O F M Archbishop of Lima Peru will be celebrant and preacher for the Baccalaureate Mass at 9 00 a m Thomas Green son of Mr and Mrs Harry Green will receive a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering degree.
Mrs A N Richards of Clap ham England will be feted at open house on Friday June 3 at the home of her son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Orville Stewart from 2 to 4 pm Neighbors and friends are invited to meet Mrs Richards who is spending three months in Greene visiting her daughter and family hostesses are Mrs Ruth Wood and Mrs Flora Griner
Charles Starkweather of Greene avoided injury in a two car crash at 1 10 a m Sunday north of Greene near the Veterans Club. Larry Mason traveling south allegedly struck Starkweather on the right front. Mason and passenger Ronald Slocum suffered cuts and bruises needing stitches. Mason faced O M V I charges and was jailed in Allison on 500 bond. Mason's car about 480 damage. Starkweather car a total loss.
