Martin James Majewski 72 died suddenly at his Greene home on July 24 from a heart attack. Born November 6, 1895 in Floyd County, he farmed in Greene before retiring. Survivors include brothers Harry and John of Greene and many nieces and nephews. Funeral at St Mary's Catholic Church July 27 with Rev Joseph Murphy officiating. Burial in St Mary's Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Butler Soil Conservation District schedules a Monday afternoon tour on August 5 to view soil conservation practices. Attendees will see a farm pond new and one established for years, terraces damaged by floods, a group drainage project, and five farms in Parkeracburg starting at Polly's Cafe at 1:00 p.m.
Robert Curtis local Postmaster announces Greene Post Office will open as usual until noon on Saturdays.
Russell J. Perry of Aplington reports mid year savings bond sales in Butler County of 21,453 dollars for Series E and H bonds and Freedom Shares. Total county sales reach 220,226 dollars, 27 percent of 1968 quota. State totals show Iowa at 41 percent of its annual goal with 45,613,200 dollars earned mid year.
Harold Marvin Barnett 51 died Wednesday afternoon July 24 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo after months of illness. A Greene born World War II veteran, he worked at Greene McRoberts Implement Co. Survivors include two daughters, his parents, two sisters, and a brother. Funeral Friday at 2 p m Reid's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Gjerde officiating. burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Marvin Barth attended a school for deputy sheriffs in Waterloo from Tuesday through Thursday last week. Deputies received instruction on target practice riot control narcotics and related subjects.

Greene High School Stage Band will perform at the 1968 Gay 90s Heritage State Fair on Sunday August 25 with two sets 1125 to 1205 and 1745 to 1835 on the Grand Concourse and Plaza Bandstand Stage Kenneth R Falk fair secretary announced The band one of over seventy Iowa high school bands will appear during August 16 25 along with marching and mounted drill units talent sprouts and other events at the fair venues
Pastor George S Knutson announces Evangelist Kenneth F Dodson will lead a New Life Crusade at the Baptist Church from August 4 to 11 with daily services at 745 p m and Sunday 11 am A Day of Prayer for Revival is set for Sunday August 4 and a Three Hour School of Prayer from 1230 to 330 pm is planned Dodson has preached in numerous churches and evangelistic tours attracting large crowds to services inviting the public to attend.
Greene Little League and Babe Ruth teams from Greene will attend the Minnesota Twins versus Detroit game in Minneapolis on Saturday August 3. Players meet at the old bus barn by 8:00 a.m. Buses depart then with sack lunches and money for an evening drive-in meal. Return about 8:45 p.m. Fathers may ride as chaperones. tickets paid from the event proceeds.
A creative dramatics class will be held from August 12 to 21 for children aged five to eight. The daily half hour sessions will be led by Mary Lou Murphy directing the program.
Barry Findlay of Cedar Falls won the men’s Invitational at Round Grove Golf and Country Club with 108 for 27 holes. He led 38 35 35 in the championship flight, as runners-up posted 111 totals and a three to six hole playoff decided places two through four.
Greene Community Schools will open for the 1968 year with full day classes on Wednesday August 28. Teacher workshops are scheduled for August 23 26 and 27. Labor Day holiday on September 2. The County Fair crowned Grand Champion Baby Beef with a 1050 pound Angus shown by Rod Williamson of Parkersburg, beating 233 calves. Reserve went to Jacque Roose of Allison with a 1070 pound Hereford. Barbara Allen Greene led the Shorthorn champion, Bruce Lindaman its reserve. Cross-bred winner was Russell Stickley with Tom Needham as reserve. Junior and Senior Showmanship honors went to Brett Dix and Rod Williamson respectively. Many 4-H clubs and numerous exhibitors received blue ribbons across Angus, Hereford, and Shorthorn divisions.
Air Force Captain Jim Stanton, who has practiced law in Cedar Rapids for the past year, re enlisted in the Air Force. He is stationed at Blytheville Air Force Base Arkansas and resides there with his wife.
A Blood Mobile will visit the Senior High School at Charles City on Thursday August 8 and Friday August 9 to collect donations for Teri Leah Barnett. Hours are 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM on August 8 and 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM on August 9.
Greene Community School district residents will vote Thursday August 1 in the high school gym lobby from 4 to 7 PM on the location of the bus maintenance shop and adjacent bus parking. The advisory referendum is nonbinding, though the board president John Van Eschen said consideration would be given to the results. Voters may choose from four sites.
Twin daughters arrived Sunday July 28 to Mr. and Mrs. Benie Felts of Mount Airy North Carolina. Birth weights were 5 pounds 10 ounces and 5 pounds 15 ounces. Mrs. Felts is Melva Rae Schuknecht, daughter of Vernon Schuknecht and late residents of Greene now living in Mount Airy. Great grandfather is Frank W. Schuknecht of Greene and great grandmother is Mrs. Carl Frank of Marble Rock.
Mrs C G Starkweather underwent surgery on Wednesday July 24 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Mr and Mrs Harry Stanton announce the birth of a daughter born on Saturday July 27 at Manchester hospital weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces. The baby is named Cynthia Marie and will be welcomed home by sisters Linda and Suzanne and brother Patrick as the Stanton family moves this week to 1009 First Avenue in Iowa Falls.
Mrs Will L Salge 68 of Allison died unexpectedly at home July 21. Born Oct 9 1899 near Wilmar to Henry and Minna Finke she married Will L Salge Jan 24 1923. Funeral July 24 at St John Lutheran Wilmar with Rev Hohensee, burial Wilmar Cemetery. Survived by husband Donald daughter sisters and brothers and nine grandchildren.
Coming events at the Country Club include a steak fry Saturday at 9.00 PM a ladies city golf tournament on Wednesday August 7th and a stag supper on Thursday evening August 8th.
Greene and Parkersburg competitors dominate the Butler County Fair with Delaine Freeseman earning Champion Individual Market Pig, Randy McMahon taking Reserve in Pig Class, and Brian Kruse claiming Reserve Champion Pen of 3. Sheep, horse, and pony divisions follow with multiple blue ribbons for Schrage, Leerhoff, Jewell, Lindaman, and Card among others.
Greene repeats as Babe Ruth tournament champions defeating Rockford 6 to 0 in Marble Rock on Tuesday evening. Dick Stuntz pitched a 2 hitter for Greene Ramblers with strong infield defense. Nora Springs and Marble Rock claimed earlier wins in the tournament.
Mrs Roy Martzahn was admitted to St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly on Sunday and transferred to St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota on Tuesday morning where she remains under observation and treatment.
The Jaycees of Greene host their annual beef barbeque this Sunday August 4 at Perrin Park. Meals will be served from 11 30 a.m. to 6 30 p.m at the Jaycee Shelter House. Proceeds fund community projects.
The annual 4-H and FFA Baby Beef Sale at the Butler County Fairgrounds grossed 48,802.63 with 213 calves sold for an average 28.07 per CWT. Average beeve weight was 816 pounds, total weight 173,834. Buyers included Waverly Sale Company 29 calves, State Bank of Greene 24, Mennen Livestock 21, and Jim and Ray Uh.
