Robert Curtis announced that effective Saturday July 27 the Greene Iowa Post Office will be closed Saturday mornings along with other 1st and 2nd class offices nationwide. Rural carriers deliver as usual and mail will be dispatched at 12 00 noon and 5 00 p m. Mail to Canada not accepted due to postal strike.
New resident Mr and Mrs Roger Wells are the parents of a son born Sunday July 21 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. The baby weighed 7 pounds 13 ounces and has been named Ronald Dale. Grand parents are Mr and Mrs Howard Wells of Bristow and Mr and Mrs Everett Staebler of Charles City. Great grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dick Van Horn and Mrs Louise Wells of Greene.
On Wednesday July 17 Braves defeated Giants 3 0 Dodgers beat Indians 7 0 and Yankees over Orioles 9 2 all three games were shutouts. Mark Miller and Steve Stanton silenced the hitters for Braves and Dodgers while Jim McLennan limited Orioles to three hits for the Yankees.
The Butler County Fair begins in Allison with a projected record livestock and 4 H exhibits. Joie Chitwood Thrill Show headlines, horse showing events run Thursday to Sunday, and queen crowning Thursday. Melinda Smith, Greene senior, represents Greene County. Rides, rodeo acts, and door prizes spread across five days.
Six entrants vie for the Cookout King Crown of Butler County at the Allison fairgrounds on Thursday July 25 at 1 30 pm. Competitors include Herman Faber Chuck Hardy Lester Schrage Jim Shoemaker M P Pete Jensen and Roger DeBower, each sponsored by local groups. Three judges Mrs Genevieve Craven Mrs C B Donahue and Mr Bill McDowell will judge. contest aims to boost red meat use with proceeds supporting the Butler County Farm Bureau.
The Social Security Administration district office in Waterloo will visit Allison at the courthouse on August 7 14 and 28 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Vernon S Meyer district manager notes the Waterloo office at 525 West 4th Street is open Mondays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 234 1554 for details.
Seventeen Boy Scouts and Explorers from Greene camped at the Winnebago Scout Grounds in Marble Rock from July 7 through 18. Scoutmaster Henry Smeins assisted with merit badges. Attendees earned badges in swimming nature and second class along with various specialized awards including mile swim and order of the arrow. Other participants included Russell Mc Gee Jim McLennan Jack Reid and Tim Heidenwirth.
Mr and Mrs Walter Marsh of Marble Rock with Mrs Maude Marsh and Mrs Pearl Neumann attended the Ackland family reunion at Rochelle Illinois on Sunday. The group traveled to Illinois on Thursday and while the Marshes visited relatives in DeKalb Neumann and Maude Marsh visited Mary Sparks in Chicago.
Mr and Mrs Verle Barth returned home by plane on Tuesday evening July 16 after a ten day vacation in Duarte California with their daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Jim Osier and family They also visited Mr Barth's uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Leonard Kingery in Ventura California En route home they met Mr and Mrs Harvey Hansen in Denver Colorado
Darwin Niehaus and Carl Niehaus and son of Greene have entered Spotted Swine at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines.
Mr and Mrs Donald Schukencht return from Vancouver Washington after attending funeral services for Cecil Cross 39 of Charles City who died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday July 13 Survivors include his wife three children his parents Mr and Mrs Marvin Cross and three sisters including Mrs Schukencht of Greene Cross accompanied by Mr Cross of Charles City on the plane trip to Vancouver
Mrs Earl Keen of New Richland Minnesota underwent surgery on Tuesday July 16 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. She is recuperating at the home of her parents Dr and Mrs B V Andersen. Also visiting are the Keen children Vernon Kathy Beth and Mary Margaret.
Babe Ruth team wins 2-0 behind Jerry Shultz no hitters over Rockford to clinch at least a first place tie in Shell Rock Valley League. Little Leaguers prevail 38-1 behind Dave Eimers one hit victory to keep Rockford, Greene and Nashua in a three way scramble for the title. Greene also defeats Nora Springs 10 to 5 while Babe Ruth drops 6 to 5 in a makeup game.
Butler county 4H girls bring 644 textiles and clothing entries to the fair said by Mrs. Roberta Wiegmann extension home economist. This is 95 more entries than last year with 187 junior 198 intermediate and 259 senior divisions. Garments will be judged Wednesday and Thursday and displayed the rest of the fair. All visitors are invited to view exhibits in Floral hall.
The Greene Ramblers lost 3 to 2 to Allison in the sectional tournament semi finals held at Allison Friday night. Greene were hampered by missing first string players on vacation, but Karl Sneed delivered a key first appearance with a single. Greene scored in the 2nd and 6th innings while Allison plated runs in the 1st 5th and 6th. The winning run was walked in.
The farmer businessmen soft ball game scheduled for Sunday was rained out and may be played this Wednesday if weather allows. The Babe Ruth team and their dads open the evening at 7 30 p m with proceeds to fund Greene summer baseball. Admission is 1.00 for adults and 25 cents for children. Mothers will sell lunches to aid the program. If rain continues another date is set for July 31.

Butler County 4H Demonstration program selected senior demonstrations to represent the county at the Iowa State Fair. Accessorize by Geri Krull and Jacque Roose of the Butler Bonnie Belles, Meat Type Hog Program by Brian Kruse of Greene, and Making a Calf Blanket by Steven Meyer of Greene received ribbons or recognition.

Robert Beck Centerville publisher and Republican governor candidate will appear at the Butler County Fair in Allison Sunday July 28 accompanied by the Beck ettes Drill Team. Beck has campaigned across Iowa in one week visiting 20 communities and highlights a long record in road modernization and Interstate construction. He is a former Iowa Highway Commission member and ex legislator, active Methodist layman, Iowa Wesleyan College trustee, past Iowa Good Roads Association president, and World War II Navy veteran with nine battle stars. He is married to Charlotte Allen with three children.
