The Recorder marks a quiet news week aided by advertisers and contributors. Ray Holzschuh, known as Diz, recalls facing the Sioux City Ghosts in 1948 while pitching for Albrecht's Hatchery, praising his performance against the Negro all star team and a playful meet between managers.
The Wednesday Night Mixed League ended its season with standings: Twenty Four Split, Wood Choppers, Clodwater Crows, Few Fills, Lucky Strikes, and Pin Busters. The Lucky Strikes won the bowl off to claim the championship. Few Fills and Clodwater Crows split wins in other matchups. Barbara Stock led women with 184 game and 470 series. Elmer Stock top men with 223 game and Galen Miller 556 series. Highs: Gertie Marsh 199 with 506, Jim McLennan 234, Galen Miller 609, Wood Choppers 71 single, Twenty Four Splits 2133 series.
The 1959 crop soybeans will be supported at 1.82 per bushel for No. 2 grade with 13.8 to 14 percent moisture. Support via farm and warehouse loans and purchase agreements runs through Jan 31, 1960, with loan maturity May 31, 1960. Eligibility requires No. 4 or better and moisture under 14 percent. About 74,089 bushels from 1958 were placed under price support in Butler County, with 25,824 bushels redeemed, 26,942 being delivered in loan settlement, and 21,823 resealed for another loan period.
Mrs Clarence McCracken is back home Wednesday after treatment for a broken hip at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. W H Springer also returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after treatment.
Russell Landers son of Mr and Mrs Ardean Landers received a broken bone in his left leg Thursday afternoon when a jack supporting a windrower gave way causing the machine to fall. The injured limb was placed in a cast.
New resident Mr and Mrs Eugene Steere are the parents of a daughter born on Thursday July 23 in Charles City. The newborn weighs 8 pounds 7 ounces and joins the family as a new arrival in the community.
The Butler County Conservation Commission has near completed work at Camp Comfort south of Greene on the Shell Rock river. The grounds are leveled and cleared of excess vegetation with outdoor rest rooms, fire places, and picnic tables added. A dam provides deeper upstream water and a good angling spot for bass and catfish.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosted Post Challenge Board Matches last week with results: Robert Curtis beat Charles Teeple and Sam Sneed. Richard Wagoner defeated Gerald Stephenson. Robert Mead over Mike Potter. Oscar Bartels defeated John McWhirter. The One Hundred Third annual Butler County Fair opens Friday in Allison for three days and four nights of entertainment ending Monday evening August 3. Over $4,500 in premiums and a scheduled Saddle Horse Show, parades, horse races, running events, and free acts highlight the program with masters of ceremonies Bob McElroy and acts by the Winslows Quallmans Teddy Qualls and the Todd Troupe delivering family entertainment.
Greene Junior Legion defeated Charles City 27 to 8 as Charles City errors fueled most runs. Bob Barth pitched well allowing three hits with three strikeouts, four walks. Kingery Marsh Bob Barth Kenny Barth and Miller scored once each, Gabe had two.
A group of 23 Boy Scouts from Troop 26 of Greene and their Scoutmaster Henry Smeins and assistant Scoutmaster Bruce Glass spent July 12 through 18 at the new Scout Reservation at Marble Rock. The camp was hailed a success with several scouts earning Second Class and merit badges across swimming canoeing nature life saving wildlife management soil and water conservation forestry and personal fitness. Rifle range participants earned marksman and pro marksman awards as leaders noted the boys prepared their own meals in the maintenance building.
The Public Library shelves added several new titles for young readers. New reads include The Cat in the Hat Come Back by Dr. Seuss, Sammy and the Seal by Hoff, A Big Ball of String by Holland, A Fly Went by McClintock, and Danny and the Dinosaur by Hoff. Also available are Littlest Bear by Hogan, Petunia Bear by Duvoisin, Jeanne Marie at the Fair by Francoise, The Mouse Needs a House by Christensen, plus classics The House that Jack Built and The Chanticleer and the Fox with vivid illustrations. Chanticleer and the Fox won the 1958 Caldecott Award for Barbara Cooney.
Twenty nine Explorer Scouts and leaders from Greene and nearby towns traveled by chartered bus to Milwaukee, leaving Shell Rock at 6:00 a.m. and arriving at 3:30 p.m. They toured the zoo and attended the Braves Redlegs game before returning home early Friday. Attending Greene members included Bruce Mead Jim Hoben Tom Green Ewing Miller and Paul Burroughs with Leonard Nichol as explorer leader. Other towns represented were Dumont Aplington New Hartford and Shell Rock.
Mr and Mrs Howard Allison of Des Moines announce the birth of a son on Thursday morning July 23. The infant weighed 4 pounds 10 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Harold Allison and Mr and Mrs Henry Schmidt of Greene.

Butler County 4-H members prepare for the Butler County Fair July 31 to August 3 with emphasis on fitting and showing. County Extension Director Kay Connelly and Animal Husbandman Tom Wickersham of Iowa State University urge good feeding, cleanliness, and proper training. Ensure health certs and vaccinations for hogs, cattle TB and brucellosis tests within timelines, and familiarize with fair rules to avoid disqualification.
A dance will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Saturday evening August 1. Music will be provided by Don Hamilton and his orchestra. Arrangements are in charge of George Sneed Wayne Zimmerman Gene Nettleton Jim McLennan and Harold Williams.
Mrs Gladys Miller is recuperating from major surgery performed at University Hospitals in Iowa City recently.
World famous golfer Sam Snead will play an 18 hole exhibition against Iowa players Jack Jones and Jack Hall next Tuesday afternoon at Greene’s top golf course. The 1:36 pm start will feature Snead’s southern charm and a course praised for its challenging greens and dog leg at three and pond hazards on seven and eight. Local stores will close for the event as Greene prepares for Snead Day with a writers’ stag the prior evening.
