Sam Snead wowed local golfers with a course record on a 36 par layout. He fired a 29 in the second round after a 3 under par first round, praising the greens as among the best since leaving West Virginia.
During Sunday worship at First Presbyterian Church Therese Anne Tornowske and Susan Kay Rhoads were baptized. Therese Anne is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert W Tornowske and Susan Kay is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Cecil M Rhoads.
More than one fourth of the 6000 shotgun deer licenses have been applied for by July 27. The State Conservation Commission reports 1554 shotgun license requests and 33 bow and arrow requests. Forms arrive at over 250 per day, with an October 14 deadline looming. Venison steak eligibility requires the 1959 application sent to the Commission in Des Moines. Forms available from county recorders, conservation officers, or the Des Moines central office.
The Boy Scout Reservation at Marble Rock hosted the annual summer meeting of the Order of the Arrow on Saturday night August 1. Jo S Stong gave the dinner speech as a Keosauqua attorney and past Southern Iowa Council president, a Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope award recipient, and National Executive Board member and Region VIII chairman overseeing Iowa Missouri Nebraska Kansas Colorado and Wyoming. Ordeal ceremonies ran from Friday evening to Sunday morning.
George Fritschler of Aberdean South Dakota received a badly bruised left leg when his 1953 Chrysler collided at a Allison intersection with a 1954 Oldsmobile driven by Mary Virginia Peterson of Mountain View California on Friday July 31 at 11 45 am. Peterson was not injured and both cars were damaged slightly.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Ritter announce the birth of a son on Wednesday July 29 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds 4 1/2 ounces and is named Robert Wayne.
Dean Charles Barnett son of Mr and Mrs Bob Barnett of Greene has enlisted for four years in the United States Air Force. He enlisted through the Mason City Recruiting Office.
Mrs. Carl Dreier died in Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after weeks as a patient. Maude Butzlaff born February 21 1888 Greene daughter of Ferdinand and Augusta Butzlaff. Married February 1933 to Carl Dreier. Funeral Aug 5 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Floy. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Hamilton's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Greene Pee Wees finish runner up in Clarksville Invitational with two wins and one loss. They edge Holland 5 4 in opener as Spratt earns win with Hamilton backing relief. Spratt 2 hits Marsh 1. Second game beats Dike 8 2 behind Hamilton mound work and Marsh catching. Finals delayed by rain then lost 8 4 to Allison after leading 4 2. Fischer and Marsh triple highlight Greene bats. Hamilton Clapham pitched for Greene.
Mr and Mrs Bill Crane of Clarksville announce the birth of their daughter Janice Lee on July 24 at Mercy Hospital in Waverly. The baby weighed 7 pounds 12 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Cliff Crane of Greene.
New residents Mr and Mrs Will Ramker learned Friday July 31 of the birth of a grandson to Mr and Mrs Wayne Riehle in Chicago. The infant is Mark William and the mother Myrna Ramker. Mrs Will Ramker visits the Riehle home in Chicago. In Charles City Mr and Mrs Keith Hadley welcomed a son July 27 at Cedar Valley Hospital weighing 6 pounds 2 ounces named John Robert. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Clyde Wegand of Greene.
The Yankees clinched the Little League title with a 10 to 9 victory over the Dodgers on Tuesday. Mark Ott delivered the final go ahead hit, while Steve Clapham and Paul Hamilton led pitching for Dodgers and Yankees respectively. Pirates defeated White Sox 14 to 7 in the other featured game.
Four year old Duane Dix Jr. vanished at noon Friday July 31 near Allison. Sheriff and neighbors searched about an hour before locating him in the woods near the family farm.
A Club Breakfast will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Sunday morning August 9. Serving runs from 7 00 to 9 30 a m.
A Baltus aircraft piloted by Charles Cit crashed through a fence on the Russell Frascht farm around 5 PM Tuesday while attempting to take off. Passenger Sam Snead, an exhibition golfer, was aboard and was taken to Waterloo after the incident to meet another plane for his destination. The wings sustained slight damage and the plane resumed flight about an hour later.
Twenty one men gathered at the Lawrence Paplow home on July 24 with combin balers and elevators and harvested oats and baled straw. The group included Ralph Marsh, Merlin Ressler, Vern Steere, Earl Steere, Dean Davis, Earl Newbern, Harold Meyers and Douglas Marsh. Also Herman Stubbe, Leo Steere, Alvin Klunder, Gene Steere, Earl Schrage, Francis Lubben, Hugo Senne, Herman Mason, Roger Martzahn, Ray De Vries, Walter Hemmerick, Ed DeBower and Irving VanRaden, T. S. Albrecht and his men assisted with other work around the farm. Assisting Mrs. Paplow were Mrs. D. C. Marsh, Mrs. Ed De Bower, Mrs. Perry Newbern, Lucy Newbern and Mrs. Dean Davis.
Clarence Stahr of Floyd aged 48 was found dead in his car Monday morning July 27 on the Paul Erb farm south of Rockford where he worked. James Erb discovered the body while searching for him. A former Greene resident who moved to Floyd about five years ago, he left a wife and three children. Funeral services were held at Hamilton's Funeral Chapel Wednesday July 29 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. L J. Devies officiated. Burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery.
James Miller, former Cedar Valley Hospital patient, was brought to the home of his son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Erik Anderson on Monday where he is recuperating from a recent illness.
Mrs Glacys Miller was released from the University Hospital on July 27 after major surgery and is recuperating at her home.
The Butler County Fair opened Friday July 31 and closed Monday August 3 drawing about 12 500 attendees. Saddle horse show led the events with 4-H and FFA calf sale grossing 30 013 from 108 calves. Top awards went to Meints Brothers Ackley and Mary Lou Squires Greene with grand and reserve champions.
Sam Snead thrilled 1,500 fans by tearing Round Grove Golf and Country Club in an 18 hole total of 62 setting a course record. He faced Jack Jones of Waterloo and Jack Hall of Des Moines in two rounds as the crowd praised the short, sporty course conditions.
Carolyn Schmidt of Clarksville and Maxine Schwerdtfeger of Parkersburg won the Butler district Queen of the Furrow contest held July 31 in the Butler Soil Conservation District Office. Winners advance to regional competition at the Winneshiek Fair Decorah August 22, with nine regional winners earning watches and state finals at Mason City September 20.
Mr and Mrs Allen Adler will discuss the needs of about 4000 Hopi Indians living in ji villages at Calvary Baptist Church this Thursday at 8 00 p m They plan missionary work among the Hopi starting in September Rev and Mrs Paul Shook recently returned from Japan will speak at the Sunday School and Morning Worship on Sunday August 9 Rev Shook is from Plainfield and has many local friends who will hear of their Japan experience Worship Service is at 12 00 am
Mr and Mrs Duane Chase of Iowa City announce the birth of their son Mark Allen on Wednesday July 29. Mrs Crane is the former Mary Peck daughter of Dr and Mrs P C Peck of the same area.
The Greene Future Farmers of America will top corn at gravel road intersections to prevent accidents. The contest, held between two teams, aims to determine which can top the most intersections on Saturday August 8. The winning team will be treated to watermelon by the opposing team. About 70 to 75 Iowa rural intersection deaths occur yearly due to limited vision from tall corn.
Judith Stubbe, 18, leaves August 10 for a week at the State Leadership Camp near Boone Town. Bennedette Farmers Daughter 4-H member representing Butler County, she will join about 100 youths to learn leadership, sociology concepts from Iowa State University, and participate in activities including parties, campfire programs, and vesper services.
Priscilla and Philip Pooley have returned home after a week’s vacation in El Paso Texas visiting their son Corporal Richard Pooley at Fort Bliss. The trip included stops at White Sands National Monument near Alamogordo New Mexico and the resort town of Ruidoso New Mexico.
