Butler county June savings bonds sales reached 84200, lifting the first half to 679531, or 67 percent of the yearly quota. Iowa six month attainment stood at 53 percent of its 1959 target, while the national average was 46 percent. Volunteer county chairman John McWhirter of Allison praised buyers and noted retroactive interest raises would apply to June 1. Town totals showed 9050568 in June sales, yielding 81,72444 for the state's half year.

Richard Wagoner vocational agriculture instructor in Greene Community Schools attended district meetings on teaching problems at Hotel Fort Des Moines on July 14 and 18. Speakers included Dr. Clifton L. Ganus of Harding College and Dr. Elbert M. Smith of Iowa State College who spoke on the United Nations.
Cecil Dale Butler, 61, died at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly after a brief illness. He was a former projectionist in Greene and later employed in Waverly in the same role. Survivors include his mother Mrs Myrta Butler of Boone. Funeral services were Monday at 1:00 pm at Cleveland Funeral Home in Waverly with burial at Roselawn Cemetery in Boone at 4:00 pm.
Larry Lee Hinders received a ticket for no operator license on July 4. He failed to appear in J P Court, was apprehended in Mason City, and brought to Knight's Court by Butler County Sheriff Pete Boom garden on July 20. He was sentenced to 9 days in Butler County Jail in Allison.
Vern Kyle Parkersburg George Stopplemoor Clarks ville and W A Austin Dumont received bass fingerlings for farm ponds under the District Soil Conservation program. Don Hagarty Greene District notes fish come from Guttenburg Iowa hatchery and are free to farmers with open season rules. Bluegills will be stock in about a month, four times as many bluegills as bass planned to feed the bass. Farmers may contact Soil Conservation District Officer Allison Hagarty for stocking details.
Visiting parents Mrs. Russell Wehrhan and Annette Bob Marilyn and Chuck Wehrhan stay the month of July in the Tor rance home of Mrs. Wehrhan’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knapp in a brief local society note.
Final week of the Recreation Park Program features no single theme, showcases past themes, and includes a circus inspired costume parade. Prizes awarded for fortune teller and clown. crafts, free table activities, and a watermelon feast planned with kids contributing a dime per piece. Red Cross swimming lessons finish next Tuesday at the Municipal Pool in Charles City.
The July family picnic will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Thursday evening July 23. Serving will start at 6 30 with Mr and Mrs Loren McRoberts and Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh in charge.
Mr and Mrs Don Neely return from Ash Grove Missouri where Mr Neely served at First Presbyterian Church for a year He will finish at Dubuque Theological Seminary and will serve a church in Elizabeth Illinois where they will reside Mrs Neely will teach kindergarten in Galena Illinois She is Elaine Barnhart daughter of Mr and Mrs Leslie Barnhart
The Midgets remained undefeated by beating Shell Rock 7 to 3 and Clarksville 9 to 1. Pee Wees beat Shell Rock 4 to 3 but lost to Clarksville 6 to 3, with Butch Spratt and Steve Clapham pitching in the Shell Rock game and Jim Drake collecting a triple and a single. Clarksville’s 6 runs came after five consecutive bunts in the eighth. Barth and Spratt led Midgets hitters, and Barth allowed only one hit in the Clarksville win. The Pee Wees head to a tournament at Clarksville or New Hartford on July 23–27.
Charles Iver Johnson of rural Nashua was arrested by Patrolman Hauser Saturday night for a noisy muffler. He appeared before Justice Frank Knight on Tuesday morning July 21 and was fined $10 plus costs.
Mrs. Lucille Anderson 70, formerly Lucille Lamberson, died Friday in Fairfield after a cancer battle. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Al Lamberson, she was born in Greene. Survived by husband and brother Fred Lamberson of Albert Lea Minnesota. Funeral Monday in Fairfield with burial there.
Tuesday Bowling League concluded last night with Dorothy Fischer taking the party season prize at 4482 points and Helene Gabcelman in second with 4480. Evening jackpot prizes went to Esther Hollingsworth and Alma Heckman. High scores included Dorothy Fischer 447 Mort Sherman 424 Helen Latch 409 and Ollie Henline 403.
Greene High School Class of 1939 held its 20th anniversary reunion with a dinner social at Club Town on Saturday and a Sunday Round Grove Golf and Country Club picnic. Twenty members plus 78 attendees including 41 children enjoyed out of town guests from several states. Greene residents listed. A 1964 plan for the 25th anniversary reunion was announced.
The Rev George F Butler Greene attends the Third Annual School for Presbyterian Pastors at the University of Omaha from July 15 to 22. Sixty six pastors from 11 states participate, with a focus on refresher study for clergymen five years from seminary. Special events include a tour of the Strategic Air Command and a Omaha Symphony Summer Pop Concert.
James Miller was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City Monday morning where he is undergoing treatment.
More than one hundred women from eighteen clubs competed in the Invitational Golf Tournament at Round Grove Golf and Country Club Greene. Arlene Reinhardt of Waverly won the 18 hole championship with 91 strokes. Fern Wilson Mason City was runner up with 95 and Doris Ritter Sumner placed third with 97. Prize winners spanned multiple flights including Myrtle Smith Rockwell and Margaret McLaughlin Mason City. Separate events included twelve tables of bridge with winners named from Charles City New Hampton and Mason City. A store burglary at Cliff's Food Market, basement entry via coal chute using a borrowed ladder, netted cash in small bills and tobacco. Sheriff Pete Boomgarden investigated.
Dorothy Fischer led the ladies with 185 in a 464 series while Galen Miller topped the men with 210 for a 5151 series. The Wednesday Mixed League featured Pin Busters Lucky Strikes Wood Choppers Twenty Four Splits Coldwater Crows and Feye Fills, with team records showing Pin Busters 2-0 over Lucky Strikes and Twenty Four Splits 3-1 over Coldwater Crows.
Mrs. Carl Dreier is receiving treatment at Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City.
The Men's City Golf Tournament is set to begin by August 9 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Qualifying rounds must be completed by August 2 to allow match play to start on August 9. Names, entries, and match schedules will follow.
Mr and Mrs Cliff Ross announce the birth of a daughter on Tuesday evening July 21 at 9 45 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The infant weighs 6 pounds 14 ounces and is named Susan Marie.
Mrs. Florence May Metcalf Butzlaff 69 died at Clark Rest Home July 15 after a lingering illness. Survived by husband Fred, daughter Mrs. Paul Burroughs, three sisters, four brothers, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Funeral Saturday 2 PM at First Methodist Church, Rev. Clayton Becker officiating. burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Hamilton's Funeral Chapel in charge.
New titles for boys and girls include Marguerite Henry’s Muley Fars Nobody’s Dog and The Eskimo People by Arie Hunters and Trap aires. Other offerings feature School Room in the Parlor, Dell of Lilac Valley, Zoria the Fox, Red Eagle, Then Came Mr Billy Parker, Mystery of the Indian Hideout, Paul Revere Boy of Old Boston, and Annie Oakley Little Sure Shot with illustrations.
The Junior Legion journeyed to Nora Springs and fell 17 to 10 in a rain soaked slugfest. Monday they lost 5 to 4 to Allison with Doug Marsh pitching well but receiving shaky support. Ken Barth led Rambler hitters with 2 hits in 3 at bats as the team hoped for a late rally. The squad travels to Charles City today.
Mrs. Larry Dovey and Lori departed by plane Saturday night for Thousand Palms California. They spent a few days visiting the parental Clarence Shultz home and other relatives and friends.
Graduation exercises for nine Wartburg College seniors were held in Waverly Friday at 10 am. Supt. L. M. Jensen of the Waverly Public Schools was the featured speaker. Seven students plan to meet graduation requirements after the three week second session of summer school, including Barbara Voigts of Greene.
Larry Williamson was discharged Saturday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after an appendectomy performed the prior Monday.
Osage scored 390 to win the Bean Jar event at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Monday morning. Four women from Osage Greene Charles City and New Hampton competed. Greene placed second with 413. Fern Stunt was low medalist with 93. Next year the tourney will be at Charles City.
Visited by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Ira Thomas, Airman 3rd Class Reser Thom as has left for Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth Texas after a two weeks furlough spent at their home. He trained at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls Texas.
