Hughes Signs Landmark Iowa Tax Bill In Historic Move
Governor Harold Hughes used a 69 cent pen to sign into law the most extensive and costly tax package in Iowa history. House File 702 raises over 100 million in new revenue by raising the sales tax to three percent, extending it to over 50 services, doubling the corporate tax, and implementing a state school aid formula and property tax reassessment plan. About 25 legislators and interest-group representatives attended the signing, where Hughes framed the package as a fair, long-range financing plan for schools and tax relief for property owners.
