The editor invites readers to a July 21 softball game featuring Harmon Killebrew and local seniors. Farmers and businessmen will play in a humorous opener to fund a summer baseball program for little leaguers.
The Country Club lists a family picnic on Thursday July 18. A mixed couples shotgun on Sunday afternoon July 21 followed by a ham burger fry. Ladies day on Wednesday July 24. A stag supper on Thursday July 25. The Men's Invitational Tournament on Saturday July 27.
Larry Jorges aged 18 narrowly escaped drowning after exhausting while swimming the Shell Rock River Sunday afternoon. He called for help midway between Maxson Boat Shop and the A and W Drive In. Mike Maxson, 18, swam to aid and kept him afloat until Maurice Conry, Greene, and Ray Reicherts, New Hampton, arrived with a boat to bring them to shore.
Mrs Ruth Haugenburg is back at home Sunday after a seven week stay at Floyd County Memorial Hospital following injuries from a May 24 car crash. The wreck occurred on Highway 14 north of Greene when the other car allegedly crossed into her lane.
The State Services for Crippled Children will hold a diagnostic clinic at Herbert Hoover School Mason City on Thursday August 1 for children under 21 with chronic crippling conditions from Black Hawk Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Hancock Hardin Kossuth Mitchell Winnebago Worth Wright. No exam fee. Referrals from physicians or dentists required.
The Women s Invitational Golf Tournament at Round Grove Golf and Country Club drew 102 out of town guests and 70 local members. Ida Burns won the 18 hole championship with 87, Jean Ganske had the low 18 hole score at 86, flight winners included Karen Huse Louise Liebau Bernice Lunde and others. Amy Sheldon won the flag hole prize. Doris Hibbard received the door prize. eleven bridge tables were noted in the afternoon.

State Senator David Stanley of Muscatine and Republican U S Senate candidate spoke at a Greene coffee and at a Dumont club event. He criticized secrecy in government and urged open meetings and strict enforcement of public records laws, citing federal and state openness efforts.
Mrs Garth Butler returned home Wednesday July 10 from Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City where she had major surgery July 1.
New resident Mr and Mrs Clarence Brinkman welcomed a son named Chris William born Saturday July 13 at a hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds and joins three sisters Marjorie Barbara and Julie and two brothers David and Dallas. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Fred Brinkman of Greene and Mr and Mrs George Lutchenburg of Waverly.
The summer park program for children in grades one through four ends Tuesday July 23 at 10 15 a m at Perrin Park. The Cadet Scouts have planned a program of songs and games for this final day.
Jim Anthony son of Mrs Mabel Anthony was discharged from the Marines at Yuma Arizona after four years of service. He spent 20 months in Vietnam and completes his active duty.
A Sunday evening charity softball game at the Greene athletic field pits farmers against merchants in a heated, humorous clash. Hank Anderson accuses Deadly Freddy Nordmeyer of illegal pitching while Merlin Brunner pitches for the farmers. Proceeds aid summer baseball programs. First game starts 7:30 p.m. Admission $1 adults 25 cents children. Practice Friday 7 to dark. lunches sold by Little League and Babe Ruth mothers.
Ken Sutton's Rambler baseball team defeated Manly 10 to 0 on Tuesday and Riceville 16 to 1 on Friday. Greene led with multiple hits and runs in the Manly game while Litterer and Sanders produced key hits in the Riceville romp. Greene meets Allison in the sectional tournament this evening at 8.00 after Waverly vs New Hartford at 6:00.
Mr and Mrs Harry Green announce their son Thomas William Green has been promoted from Ensign to Lieutenant Junior Grade in the U S Navy. He serves aboard the US Renshaw of the 7th Fleet in the Western Pacific and recently took a brief rest and recreation leave in Hong Kong.
Fred Trapp of Eldora died Sunday evening July 14 at his home. Survivors include his wife Margaret and sister-in-law Mrs Archie Raymond of Greene. Funeral services are planned for this afternoon in Eldora.

Kenneth Henline underwent heart surgery Monday morning at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester Minnesota.
Robert E. Campbell announces the resignation of Morris Wash, District Scout Executive for Twin Rivers and Butler Districts in Mitchell Floyd and Butler counties. The resignation becomes effective July 15 to accept a promotion with the Rainbow Council in Joliet Illinois. Wash has served three years on the Winnebago Council Executive Staff and resides in Charles City with his family.
Mrs. James Deike of Nora Springs and the former Mildred Ellis of Greene had operations on Wednesday July 10 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City. Ronald Lauber also had minor surgery on Wednesday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Donald E. Johnson, Republican candidate for Governor, will tour Butler County on Thursday July 18. Norman R. Graven, Greene Butler County chair, announces a morning breakfast at Polly’s Cafe Parkersburg at 8 30 a m a street tour in New Hartford at 10 00 a m a second street tour Shell Rock at 11 00 a m including a dutch treat luncheon at Skinner’s Cafe Clarksville at 12 noon and a visit to the Court House and businesses in Allison. The tour ends with a coffee at Norman R Graven’s home in Greene at 3 30 p m Attendees are welcome. Johnson will appear at the Butler County Fair on Friday July 26.

The 112th annual Butler County Fair begins Wednesday in Allison running through Sunday July 28. Entry day is July 24 with livestock entries 9 am to 5 pm and junior livestock by 6 pm. flowers by 9 pm. Gates open 3 pm. Jose Chitwood Thrill Show 7 pm. Children’s Days July 25-26. Highlights include tractor pull, horse show, Little Britches Rodeo, judging, scrambles, rodeo acts by Flying Buckskins, and daily prize giveaways including eight televisions. Fair officers and directors are listed.
Troy Feldman four year old son of Mr and Mrs Don Feldman underwent surgery Monday morning at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly. He returned home Tuesday afternoon.

A heavy rain event hit Butler and Bremer counties on Tuesday evening causing widespread flooding and multiple bridge washouts. Waverly reported up to 14 inches, with Greene over 2% inches, Allison and Dumont around 8 inches, and West Fork flooding along Allison Bristow Dumont and Shell Rock areas. Basements flooded in Waverly as creeks overflowed after rain began about 8:30 p.m.
Greene's Little Leaguers routed Marble Rock seven to none on Monday evening as Mike Adams hit a homer and Jim Mc Lennan collected two triples. Babe Ruth fell 5 to 4 to Marble Rock, with Bushbaum fanning 13 Greene batters and Greene’s lone hit a high fly over left.
Lana Smith five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Smith underwent a tonsillectomy on Wednesday morning July 10 at a hospital in Charles City. She returned home on Thursday morning.

Iowa Conservation Commission officials announced there will be no special teal hunting season this fall. An experimental teal season was conducted for the past three years and is now under study. Regular waterfowl season bag limits and dates will be set in late August.
