Sportsmans Club officials announced their annual Fish Fry will occur on Friday evening August 30. The event, previously held on the first Friday in September, has been moved up one week this year.
Lt Col Shadrach E. Davis, Westover AFB deputy commander for materiel, is reassigned to Headquarters USAF at the Pentagon Washington D C. He joins the Office of Plans and Analysis Supply and Services Directorate and will begin August 1 1963. The Iowa native is a 1935 Greene High School graduate and has served 12 years on SAC Materiel Staff.
Aliss Emma Montgomery returned home Tuesday July 16 from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after major surgery the previous week.
A muskrat wandered into the Greene Public Library one afternoon last week. It sniffed along the hallway before librarian Mrs El dred Mather shooed it outside. The animal then crossed the street toward the Klassi garage.
The 107th Butler County Fair kicks off Thursday August 1 at Allison, running three days through August 4. Entries run 3 00 to 9 00 pm with floral hall closing at 6 00 pm, flowers allowed until 9 00 pm. Highlights include 4 H and FFA horse shows, a saddle horse show, a calf scramble, tractor pulling, dog races, greased pig contest, and daily races with prizes. Greene and many local businesses donated calves and support for the event.
Miss Gloria Day will present a piano recital at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday in July 2014 at 3:00. The public is invited to attend.
Verlyn Schrage returned home Thursday from Mercy Hospital in Mason City after Fesu completed four days of treatment.
Butler County registrations for the past week list owners and vehicles including Rouen Allan of Allison driving an Oldsmobile, Marlys M VeWhuir ter of Allison in a Chevrolet, Edwin Freese of Dumont with a Pontic, and James P Junke of Parkersburg in a Ford among others from Clarksville Shell Rock Greene Bristow New Hartford Parkersburg.
Michigan native First Lieutenant James L Stanton son of Mr A L Stanton leaves on Tuesday July 16 for Kincheloe Air Force Base Michigan where he will be stationed for duty with the air force indicating a new posting for the officer.
The Conservation Commission brings a Wildlife Exhibit to the Butler County Fair Allison on Saturday and Sunday August 3 and 4. A 40 foot custom-built van trailer carries about 100 live animals including birds fish and reptiles. Local conservation officers and exhibit staff answer questions distribute literature and give talks as Iowa schools and communities view the exhibit since 1948 reaching about 400000 people each year despite winter retreats.
The Twins beat the Yankees 5 3 as Wunsch singled and Willey doubled to drive in the first run. A five run fifth featured Wegand and McRoberts doubles and Wegand a triple. The Giants defeated the Cardinals 7 6 with Shultz driving in two on a first inning homer and Siemens adding a fourth inning homer in a tight game. Jim Shultz pitched the Cardinals game while Dick Stuntz worked for the Giants as the mound ace. Standings show Twins 3 1, Yankees 2 2, Giants 2 2, Cardinals 0 4.
The national Shetland Pony Congress returns to the Iowa State Fair with a Class AA show for registered ponies at halter and performance. Judges include Dick Hadley from Oklahoma. Total premium money reaches 8500 with over 35000 in cash prizes for the horse and pony show. The events run August 18 19 in the livestock pavilion with halter, performance, and double harness classes featured.
Ramblers beat Go Hawks 3 to 2 in district action. Marshalltown defeated the Ramblers in another recent matchup as the Round Grove Golf and Country Club schedules a Men's Invitational next Sunday July 28 with 112 entries, 560 dollars in prizes, one in four prize recipients, plus championship, medals and flag hole prizes.
The Greene Ramblers edged Waverly Go-Hak 3-2 on the visitors’ diamond last Friday night. Ken Sutton’s Ramblers rode strong pitching by Strottman who struck out 12 and allowed 6 hits while Myers fanned 7 in relief. Dale Poppe supplied the decisive blow with a double that scored the winning run in the top of the seventh as Greene overcame late threats and benefited from pivotal defensive plays.
The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors voted to join Bremer and Butler Counties in the Cedar Valley Mental Health Center. Services for Chickasaw residents begin October 1, with the center moving to 112 First Street SE, Waverly, mid August. The center, organized in 1962, provides low cost psychiatric care and mental health education, funded by participating counties. Ten members from each county plus nine appointed by Chickasaw County form the board of directors.
Max Hites son of Mr and Mrs Don Hites has been released from a Duluth Minnesota hospital and is recuperating at his Bemidji Minnesota home.

Take My Hands by Dorothy Clarke Wilson tells how Dr Mary Verghess, born to a dignitary in South India, becomes a doctor and paraplegic, then a rehabilitation pioneer and devoted physician.
James R. Reed son of Mr and Mrs Donald Reed enlists in the Navy. He departs Waterloo on Tuesday afternoon July 16 for the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes Illinois to begin a nine week course. Enlisting with him are Clarksville boys Allyn Klunder and Richard Garbes.
