Jerry Eimers and Ken Sutton show oldster vigor in a Sunday softball game while Paul Cheney seems ageless as he heads toward social security. Fred Nordmeyer remains sharp in field and bat. The oldtimers contest drew a large crowd, boosting Little League funds past $400. Greene residents are thanked for their community spirit.
Max Dougherty, manager of the Greene Community Swimming Pool, reports over 360 Greene area children registered for Red Cross lessons. Start date is Monday July 19 with a tentative schedule by age and time, including multiple beginner groups, intermediates, and advanced swimmers.
Terry Thomason, with parents Mr and Mrs Wayne Thomason and companion Bob Balkenende of Marble Rock, competed at Winona Minnesota. He claimed first in A Hydroplane and placed second and third in B Utility, second and fourth in A Utility, and fourth in B Hydroplane.
The NIAD Education Committee led by Leslie Classick of Belmond invites NIAD Area County and District School Superintendents Board Members and media to an 8:00 p.m. July 15 information meeting on Senate File 450. Boyd Gracher of the Iowa Department of Public Instruction will answer questions on establishing area vocational schools and area community colleges. County Boards of Education must organize under the new permissive act with State Department approval.
Mr and Mrs Merlin Schrock of Indio California arrived last Wednesday for a several week visit with relatives and friends in the area.
The Farmer Merchant softball game ended 7 innings tied and moved to extra two innings. Merlin Brunner and Paul Cheney starred in a tight battle. Hank Anderson named merchant MVP as fielding and late plays kept the game lively. Gate receipts totaled 405 plus 327 from concessions for the Little League.
Mrs Will Stabe underwent major surgery Monday at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City.
The Winnebago Council of Boy Scouts of America hires Morris Wash formerly of Woodlawn Illinois to staff Twin Rivers and Butler Districts covering Mitchell Floyd and Butler counties He and his wife Carol and their four children Micki Gary Jeanne and Tom will relocate to Charles City July 15 He attends National Training School Mendham New Jersey July 13 through August 30 bringing extensive youth program experience
Mrs. Charles Guillette former Ellsworth Junior College English head gave a lecture on Shakespeare's Richard the Third and four centuries of English history from 1066 to 1485. The class will study the play and Friday plans a trip to Minneapolis for a Tyrone Guthrie Theatre production.
Janet Fiddick daughter of Floyd and Mrs Fiddick earned Dean's List for high scholarship during the spring quarter at Iowa State University in Ames.
The fourth week of the summer playground program centers on the theme Helping at Home and features crafts for home use such as planters, coasters, napkin holders, and candle holders. Activities moved to the Community Center on Monday because of rain, with popsicles donated for treatment. Helpers last week included Karen Barnhart, Jeanette Tefft, Ann Hansen, and Laura Hamilton.
Iowa statewide public assistance totaled 5,060,993 for June, down 249,637 from May. Old Age Assistance received 2,505,842, Aid to Dependent Children 1,763,275, Aid to Blind 115,830, Aid to Disabled 107,036, and Medical Aid to Aged 423,510. Butler County expenditures were 31,166, with 19,125 for Old Age Assistance and 2,096 for Medical Aid to the Aged, plus smaller payments for Aid to Dependent Children, Aid to Blind, and Aid to Disabled.
The ASCS defines community boundaries for elections as present township lines in Butler County and announces nominees will be elected per community. Nominations may be by petition, limited to one nominee per petition, signed by at least six eligible landowner or operator voters, with petitions due at the county office by July 28, 1965.
Charles M. Crouse died last Wednesday at the Chautauqua Gues Greene. He was born October 1878 in Greene to Jacob and Ann Crouse and married Ida McCracken on October 30, 1902. The couple farmed in Greene for many years and he earned a trophy from the Chi Market for shipping cattle for fifty consecutive years. He was a 50 year member of the IOOF. Survivors include several nieces. he was predeceased by his parents, four sisters or brothers. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at Reid's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Darrell Fryman officiating. burial was in Rose Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
The Butler County Master Corn Grower's Contest will be held again this year per Kay Connelly. Entries due by July 30 at the County Extension office in Wison. Entry fee is $10 and there is no refund for late entrants. plots must be at least acres, mechanically farmed, with moisture and state inspection requirements as stated last year.
The Dodgers defeated the White Sox in a ring duel as Dick Stuntz earned the win with two strikeouts. Yankees and Reds had mixed results with late innings and extra innings affecting the scores, while Twins posted a small fourth inning burst.
Osier Barth and Jerry Barth competed in drag racing at the Neita Drag Strip betweenville and Cedar Falls on Sunday. Darwin won the D Stock trophy and was runner-up in Jr Stock No. 1. John earned two trophies in G Stock Automatic while Jerry took a trophy in E Stock.
The Butler Soil Conservation District and the Farmers Grain Dealers Association of Iowa announce the sixth annual Queen of Conservation contest for Butler County girls. Entries close July 22, the district contest is July 27 in Allison, with finalists to compete in the regional event and a chance at a $250 state prize. The winner will serve as hostess for the Field Day and State Contour Plowing Match near Corning on September 9-10, 1965.
Mr and Mrs Andrew Nixt announce the birth of a son Curtis Edmund born June 30 at Flord County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 3 3/4 ounces. He has two sisters Ben 4 and Linette 3. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Chester Huffman of Charles City and Mr and Mrs Louis Nixt of Marble Rock.
Second Lt. Robert Lo Zweck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Zweck of Doz, completed an eight week Army Nurse course at Brooke Army Medical Center Fort Sam Houston Texas. Thirty officers trained in medical management sterile procedures field medicine surgery and operating economy. The 22-year-old officer graduate of St Patrick’s and a 1984 graduate of St Mary Corwin Pueblo Colorado.
A cooking meme event will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Thursday July 1 with Mr and Mrs Grayden Anderson and Mr and Mrs Loren McRoberts directing the committee. A breakfast is planned at the Country Club next Sunday July 18 from 7 30 to 10 00 a m with Mr and Mrs Walter Detra as committee chairs.
The Ramblers defeated Plainfield 2 15 to 2 in the second sectional tourney last Friday before losing to Hampton in the sectional. Greene pitcher Ott allowed 3 hits with 7 strikeouts and 6 walks as Reiners of Hampton held the Ramblers to four hits. Ken Sutton’s team ends the summer season with 9 wins and 2 losses while clinching the conference title at 8 and 1.
V J. Tatum of Greene won five dollars after his car license number matched a number displayed in Walker Hardware. The promotion awarded the prize when the match occurred at the store.
The Little Teaguers and the Babe Ruth team won 8 to 5 and 11 to 1 at Rudd last Thursday night. Greene led early with an 8 top. Tom Anderson hit a three run homer, and Jerry Shultz and Kent Jacobson contributed RBI hits. Rudd tallied all five runs in the fifth inning on one hit. The Babe Ruth squad beat Rudd 7 to 0 after Wendy Stuntz blanked them the rest of the game, while the Ramblers rallied for six runs in the fifth. Nora Springs edged the Little League 3 to 1 and beat the Babe Ruth 7 to 0 on Monday. The Little League drop left them with a 10–2 mark, tied for second with Marble Rock. Greene hosts Marble Rock Thursday and then plays Rockford Monday.
On July 6 the Butler County field biology institute toured the prairie with 16 members. Dr Cyrus W Lantz former plant physiologist lectured the group along with instructor Gene Olson on prairie history characteristics flora and function. A final field trip is planned for Pilot Knob Forest City on July 16.
Mrs Gordon Freeseman is a patient at Michell County Memorial Hospital in Osage where she underwent major surgery on Friday morning.
A Blind Bogey golf tournament was held at Round Crowe Golf and Country Club on Sunday afternoon. Scores ranged from 100 to 110 with couples guessing their total then adjusting to fit the range. Three winners were drawn from the 100 to 110 entrants. Sam Sneed and partner won the top prize.
Georgian Downs of Greene participates in a three week workshop for elementary school mathematics teachers, supervisors, and principals. The second session runs July 12 to July 30, focusing on modern mathematics methods and materials.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross will meet at City Hall in Allison Monday evening July 19 at 8:00. The public is invited to attend.
