The first year of girls softball is underway and all girls in grades 4 through 8 are welcome. Currently 4th and 5th graders meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 AM, while 6th through 8th graders meet at 10:30 AM on Tuesdays and Fridays.
Rams beat Rockwell Rebels eight to four to improve to eight wins and two losses. Sophomore Mark Aftller earned his first starting pitcher assignment, tossing six innings after a rough start. Eimers and Marten led the hitting with two hits each, including Eimers doubles. Jewell, Schafer, McLennan and others contributed in the offense as the Rams held on for the win.
The Class of 1933 held its first reunion June 23 24 in Charles City with 39 attending a Saturday dinner at Club Iowa. Dorothy Ruth presided, Phyllis Rottler offered grace, and Thomas Knight gave the welcome. Special guests included Florence Graven, Maude Martens Cuffel, Alice Hudson McMahan, and Don Wailerm. Read letters from absent faculty and alumni.
Dr Oldsen will be honored at a Rockford open house from 2 to 4 p.m. on July 2 at the United Methodist Church. He retired after 43 years of veterinary service in Rockford and nearby areas. Friends are invited to greet him and celebrate his career. Visitors at the Will H Debner home on Thursday evening included the Halstead and Bruns families, Debner relatives, Osier and Roses families, and several Greene and Allison residents, with additional callers on Friday morning from Floyd and Deballe families.
The Recorder will be on vacation the week of July 14, so the July 11 issue goes to press early. News and advertising deadlines are 6 pm Thursday July 5. Submit copy well in advance to avoid a last minute rush.
Janea Ann Fischer daughter of M and Wayne Fischer and graduate of Greene High School earned a radiologic technology degree at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Graduation ceremonies were at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Arena with a reception on campus. Post graduation, she accepted a position at Grinnell General Hospital starting July 9 as an X ray technician.
Dave Eimers nearly no hits as Rockford beats Greene 2 0 in a 57 inning effort. Eimers fanned 13, lowering his ERA to 0.49 as Greene gains 8 2 in Corn Bowl play and 9 2 overall. Les Holway goes 3 for 3 with two doubles and a single to pace Greene.
The Greene High School baseball team will be featured on KGLO TV in a Sports Drama segment after the 10 o clock news on July 9.
Schedule lists games on July 7 11 18 and 25 featuring Cardinals Orioles Giants Dodgers Red Sox Twins. Times range from 3:30 to 8:30 PM with matchups including Cardinals vs Orioles Giants vs Cardinals Giants vs Orioles and Twins vs Cardinals among others.
The Twins opened Local League play with a 13 to 6 win over the Giants. Key hits included triples by Matt Bigler and Todd Christensen and a single by T. J. Nagy. Giants’ Kay hits by Alan Ubben and Doug Schultz.
Local League teams list players and coaches for Red Sox Twins Orioles Dodgers Giants and Cardinals. Notable players include Danny Meyne Matt Bigler Alan Ubben Troy Menken Jeff Etmers Jeff Feldman Pat Nicholas and Ryan Smith, with respective coaching staffs led by Bartsh Smith Rottler Klunder and Heitland.
Mrs Frank Hannah Lockwood 98 of Greene died Sunday night at Charles City facility. Born December 22 1874 in Wisconsin Rapids Wisconsin she leaves three sons Fred Albert Lea Minn Gay Evansville Indiana LaVerne Manitowoc Wisconsin two daughters Marie Wynn Evansville Indiana Frances Wyss Monroe Wisconsin thirteen grandchildren forty one great grandchildren and seventeen great great grandchildren. Funeral Tuesday July 3 at 2 pm Rews Funeral Chapel Greene with burial July 4 at Hullcrest Cemetery Albany Wisconsin Rev Gordon Taylor to officiate.
A visiting family expresses gratitude to Greene Jaycees for hosting a race event. They praise the city and program, note their husband and son won first place, commend the trophies, and thank the organizers for a convenient, wonderful experience. Senior Master Sergeant Donald L Corporon son of M M Lews Corporon of Dougherty has graduated from the US Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Gunter AFB Alabama During the nine week course Corporon studied management techniques behavioral science and contemporary issues enabling roles of greater responsibility The academy is the highest school in the professional military education system for noncommissioned officers He has returned to Randolph AFB Texas where he serves as a personnel superintendent with the Air Force Military Personnel Center Corporon a 1953 graduate of Manly Iowa Public High School is married to Elizabeth A Barnett
Six Greene Community School students were elected to the National Honor Society. Recipients include Rhonda Helm, Barbara Markle, David Markle, Mark Miller, Galen Muller, Debra Schrage, Paul Schrage, Don Schroeder, Dale Schroeder, and Steve Stark. Election requires a 32 GPA for the past semester, a 30 or B average GPA overall, and points in character leadership and service.
The Greene Jaycees sponsor July 4 races for children at the high school football field, starting at 9 am. Races include foot races for ages 3-12 with two events per age group, sack and egged races, and bicycle races for 5-12 year olds. Prizes awarded to the top three finishers in each event.
