The Recorder staff plans another issue soon to catch up after a break. A few readers feel government should not be beaten, awaiting time to reflect. Bird houses rise in Greene as fans savor feathered song. A parent notes kids keep money moving, while fries tempt diets. Bud Kingery and Bob Rock allegedly interrupted a trip to Rockford to tutor local players in horseshoe pitching after losses.
Obituary notes the death of Mrs. Clara Drew 88 Sunday in a Pontiac nursing home after years as a Manchester and Greene resident. She was predeceased by husband and son Verne. Survived by two sons Harry Jr. of Bend Oregon Vilas of Emington Illinois and daughter Mrs. Paul Bennett Evanston Illinois. Funeral services were held in Pontiac Tuesday.
Mr and Mrs H J Schroeder and Mr and Mrs Howard Schroeder returned Friday from a twelve day trip to Wisconsin Lake Superior and Duluth Minnesota. They toured the North Shore Drive to Fort Williams and Port Arthur Canada and on to Kenora Canada. En route home they visited Benson Minnesota and spent the Fourth of July with Mr and Mrs Archie Brott and family.
Mr and Mrs Dayton Mather traveled to Chili Wisconsin to attend the funeral of Mrs Alf Lokken 64 held in Stanley Wisconsin Burial followed in Stanley Lokken born Elsie Flora daughter of Will and Greene area residents The Mathers returned home Saturday afternoon
Ezra Vern Olmstead age 67 of Shell Rock faced reckless driving charges after an accident on July 3 in Shell Rock. He allegedly stopped at a stop sign then turned left onto the street hitting a parked car, with $400 damage. He pleaded guilty in Justice of Peace Court and was fined $25 plus $4 costs.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Barth and young Billy depart Friday morning July 6 for a two week trip to Connecticut and Rhode Island to visit relatives and friends.
The Red Cross offers swimming lessons at Parkersburg pool starting Monday July 16 with sessions twice weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays. The first 9:00 a.m. bus serves swimmers to intermediate. 10:00 a.m. buses carry beginners. A 50 cent registration fee covers bus drivers. late registration allowed with class and permission slip.
Greene Little League defeated Rockford 6 to 5 on Monday to sit atop the league with 9 wins and 1 loss. The Babe Ruth team routed Rockford 16 to 0 in 4 innings, blasting 12 runs in the first and 4 more in the second, led by strong hitting from Lynn Gabe, John Barth, and Steve Clapham. Greene next plays Marble Rock and Nora Springs, while St Ansgar handed Greene their first loss 5 to 4, tying them with Rockford in standings.
Charles Howe 73 died at his Nashua home after a stroke. He lived on a farm northeast of Greene for years. The annual Lad-Dad Day was held at the Boy Scout reservation near Marble Rock on Sunday. Protestant services were held in the council ring in the morning. An outdoor cook-out featured weiners, hamburgers and watermelon. Activities included swimming and softball. Forty seven lads and dads and two leaders, Bob Shultz and Gary Rottler of Greene, attended.
The Woman's Club announces its annual flower show to be held at the high school auditorium on Tuesday July 31. The Recorder will publish the flower classification next week. All women in the community are invited to participate.
Construction will start on the sheep and swine show ring at the Butler County Fair grounds on Monday July 16 at 8 00 am 4 H members vocational agricultural instructors and FFA members are asked to help erect this show ring Everyone should bring a saw and hammer along.

Mr and Mrs Louis Henke Jr and their family en route from Battle Creek Michigan to Everett Washington spent the Fourth of July and the prior weekend at the Henke residence in Greene with Mr and Mrs Louis Henke Sr. They were guests for dinner on Sunday July 1 with Mr and Mrs Frank B Henke of Aredale in Charles City.
The undefeated Yankees fell to the Giants 9 to 4 on Tuesday evening. Dan Wegand led the Giants with 2 hits in 3 at bats while Randy Knight added two hits for the Yankees. The Dodgers defeated the Indians 6 to 2 with Steve Wunsch Gary Johnson and Larry Eimers each posting two hits including a homer by Eimers. Jeff Dralle and Jim Shultz contributed for the losers and next week Giants meet Indians while Yankees face Dodgers. League standings follow.
Edward William Brown age 66 died Monday in a Memphis Veterans Hospital. He was the son of the late Eugene and Eva Brown and lived in the Packard and Pleasant Grove areas years ago. Survived by one brother Frank G. Brown of Nashua. Services Thursday at 1 30 PM at Chenowith Funeral Home Nashua with burial in Charles City.
A stag supper will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Tuesday evening July 17. The Rockford group is in charge with W E Jones and Don Abbott as chairmen.
Calvin Folkers and Mrs Clyde Stuntz captured the Mixed Two-Ball Foursome at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on July 4 with 41. Dell Curtis and Mrs Sam, Sneed, and Bob Curtis and Mrs Jim Schroeder tied for runner up at 48. Graydon Anderson and Mrs Jim Drakle were fourth with 50 and Dr Wentworth and Annette Greene fifth with 51. Max Weyand with Mrs Max Heidenwirth took high round while Max Heidenwirth and Dawn Cheney won tag hole.
In hospital Joseph Vownine was taken by ambulance to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Monday afternoon while receiving treatment.
Park recreation program last week hosted Pet Day with children presenting pets. Winners include Danny Eimers and Raymond Truitt in rabbits, Jolene Murphy and Carolyn Drakle in dogs, Dennis Larson and Dick Larson in kittens, Kathleen Kehoe second, Paulette Shultz for smallest dog, Coleen Kehoe for hamster, and Mary and Susan Rottler for a lamb. Enrollment stands at 146 with daily attendance around 50. This week features foreign countries with Origami led by Jolene Murphy, an international village project, and flag making.
Howard Wells 43 of Bristow arrested west of Greene for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after failing to stop for Greene Marshal. He crashed three and a half miles west, appeared in Allison court with $500 bond, then in district court where he was fined $300 and costs and had license suspended 60 days.
Wayne Thomason and son Terry Thomason competed in the July 4 boat races at Charles City. Terry finished second in the 4 Hydro while Wayne placed first in B Hydro and third in A Utility. Glade Heichel earned two firsts in the A Hydro division.
The annual Missionfest of St Johns United Church of Christ at Pleasant Hill seven miles east of Greene will be held Sunday July 15 with Rev Walter Frost missionary from Ghana in East Africa as guest speaker at 10 00 am and 1 30 pm services. Women will serve the noon meal and cookies will be sold after the afternoon service. Rev A Kruetamann and the congregation invite the public. An offering for missions will be received.
Wednesday night is parents and visitors night at the Boy Scout reservation near Marble Rock. They are welcome after 6 p m. Troop 26 of Greene and nine other troops are at the reservation this week.
The Greene Junior Legion team fell 2 to 1 to Waterloo in the district final at State Center Friday evening after Waterloo scored the winning run in the ninth. Marsh led Greene at the plate with Greene’s only hit. Marsh struck out sixteen for Greene as Stoack notched the win for Waterloo. The local club had earlier defeated State Center 8 to 5 in the July 3 game with Barth twins and Gary Stauffer among the standouts. The team will host Charles City on Friday July 13 at 8:00 PM.
Greene Merchants beat league leading Fredericksburg 8 to 5 with Marsh on mound fanning 11. Newton Barth Sutton, Klunder, and Kenneth Barth produced key hits while Gabe and Newton contributed later runs. Next games include a home tilt vs Janesville and a trip to Readlyn.
Explorer Scouts conducted a safety check on June 16 inspecting 110 cars and 8 trucks. Fourteen cars failed at first inspection. eight returned after repairs and passed the recheck.
Iowa amateur inventors enter the Farm Gadget Show at Des Moines during the 10 day state fair. Entries split into gadget and farm shop divisions with top awards of 100 dollars and a 160 dollar safety bonus. Judging August 17 based on originality workmanship value and usefulness.
Candidates for Conservation Officer positions may apply to the State Conservation Commission in Des Moines for exam forms and information. The preliminary test focuses on IQ and attitude and will be held this fall. Requirements include age 22 to 38, high school education, Iowa residence for two years, with top 20 to 25 advancing to a three day Camp Dodge training and interview phase.
A teen dance will be held at the Country Club on Friday evening July 13 from 8 to 11 o clock. Eligible attendees include high school freshmen and college age youths. Chaperones are Mr and Mrs Leonard Nichol, Mr and Mrs Herman Stubbe, Mr and Mrs Vern Rottler, and Mr and Mrs Martin Senne. Bill Strike will provide the music.
The Explorer Scouts will hold a meeting at Leonard Wichel’s on July 16 at 7 30 p m to discuss plans for the canoe trip. All Explorers interested should be present at this meeting.
Gordon L. Rohwedder nineteen of Marble Rock was jailed on an extortion charge after a sheriff arrest at his home Saturday afternoon. Calvin Dean Lickweg of Sheffield signed the information. Rohwedder is held on a one thousand dollar bond.
