William Thompson Hurt returned to his father Verne Thompson’s home after five days at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames for treatment of compound fractures in his left leg. He was injured at 12:36 a.m. Tuesday June 25 when his motorcycle hit the rear of a car during a rainstorm in Ames.
The Public Library hosts Story Hour every Tuesday afternoon at Greene Public Library starting Tuesday July 9 at 2:00. Designed for younger children, Mrs. Robert Fischer serves as the story lady. Children should enter via the library side door.
New residents Mr and Mrs Alice Brunsvold welcome daughter Julie Anne born Friday June 14 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. Brother Thayne greets baby and grandparents listed as Ray Karstens Nemaha and Tiemen Brunsvold Northwood. Ronald Taylor’s daughter born Monday June 24 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces named Robin Rance. Grandparents are August Backer Valoris Taylor and others.
The Country Club hosts a steak fry and dance this evening for its grand opening. June 4 features a men's shotgun at 9:00 a m, a holiday polluck at 12:30 p m, and a mixed 2 ball foursome in the afternoon. Upcoming qualifiers include the men city tournament on Sunday July 7, the women’s invitational on Wednesday July 10, and a stag supper on Thursday evening July 11.
Greene area Jaycees near completion of a highway rest area about 2 miles south on Highway 14. The grounds lie east of the road beside the former Coldwater Township School. They hooked up water, added toilets and two picnic tables and will keep the grass mowed through summer.
Gary Frahm Butler County Extension Director announces the Extension Service will sponsor an Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest in the county. All rules and regulations of the state contest will apply. Entries close Friday July 26 with a 15 dollar entry fee. One entry per person. Bill Schneiderman of Allison will be the official measurer. Contact the Extension office in Allison to enter.
Mrs. William Gallmeyer, 90, died in Rapid City SD on Sunday June 30. Funeral services are at 2:30 PM at Reid's Funeral Chapel Greene with Rev. Paul Metzger of St. Peter's Lutheran Church presiding. Burial will follow in Vilmar Cemetery.
Russell J. Perry reports Butler County May sales of Series E and H Savings Bonds and Freedom Shares totaling 26 957, lifting five month county total to 198 773 and 24 percent of the 1968 quota. Scott County at 67 percent leads Iowa. Van Buren at 57 percent. State May sales 5 872 170. five month total 39 933 051 or 36 percent of goal. Perry notes new five percent Freedom Shares may boost sales and that Bond-A-Month and Payroll Savings not required.
The business places of Greene will be closed all day Thursday July 4 in observance of Independence Day. The post office will also be closed that day with no window service or rural route delivery. Mail will be dispatched and distributed as usual. Businesses will reopen and stay open Saturday night until 9:00 PM as usual.
Bob Barth remains hospitalized at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City under going more tests. He is listed as a patient in Room 554.
The Woman's Club of Greene announces its annual membership drive from July 5 to July 12 inviting all women in the community. For information, contact Mrs. Kenneth Jackson, Mrs. Wilford Griner, Mrs. Wm. Stabenow, Mrs. Russell Meyers, Mrs. Zoa Miller, or Mrs. James Graven.
Karen Johnson a Chicago schoolteacher spends her summer vacation with her parents Mr and Mrs Basil Johnson in Illinois.
James Nl. Graven of Greene received The Lamb Award at Sunday services. The nationally recognized honor honors Lutheran laymen and pastors aiding boys through church and scouting. Graven organized Greene Cub Scouts and held multiple leadership roles across Packs 26 and Troop 26.
The Greene Commercial Club will convene at City Hall on Wednesday evening July 10 at 7 30. Members are urged to attend as the group plans purchasing new Christmas decorations.
DPI Transportation reminds superintendents boards drivers and motorists of new state laws covering school buses. Changes require two front double lamp amber and red lamps two rear red lamps with flashing amber and red signals for pupil pickup and drop off. Drivers stop at 15 feet from stopped buses with stop arms extended and motorists must stop when red lamps flash unless highway conditions allow pass. Exceptions exist on certain multi lane highways and districts with local permits. Laws apply to all buses regardless of public or private pupils.
Charles City salutes the Greene community for its post tornado help and partnership. The city credits volunteers and groups for stabilizing after May 15, 1968 and shaping plans for a modern future with planners and local organizations joining the city administration. Gratitude and willingness to help again are expressed.
A July 4 fireworks show at the Round Grove Golf and Country Club river bank will start about 9 30 p m with ample parking at both the Country Club and the Veteran s Club Officials will assist with parking and more than 400 in aerial fireworks will be displayed The day also features children s races at Greene Athletic Field starting at 9 00 a m with prizes including a 5 00 best decorated bicycle or tricycle and a memorial fund for Dr H G MacLeod at First State Bank benefiting Greene medical students with 330 deposited to date and donations invited through Dale Schroeder or Verle Barth
Mrs Garth Butler underwent major surgery on Monday morning at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Greene firefighters were called to the Vern Van Raden farm northeast of Greene at 6 05 PM Monday to extinguish a blaze in a hog house and corn crib. A spark from a battery charger caused a battery to explode and blew the tractor sediment bulb, destroying the hog house corn crib a car and a tractor.
A letter from Mayor Harry L Brenton extends deep gratitude to supporters and expresses appreciation on behalf of the city for aid during its difficulties. The message emphasizes community solidarity and the value of assistance received.
A three hour evening meeting is set for Wednesday July 17 at the Methodist Activity Building Nashua to discuss new developments in corn harvesting marketing and storage. Extension specialists Dale Hall Vernon Meyer and Robert Wisner will present. Topics include corn pickers shellers combines harvesting losses narrow row equipment and three storage methods with advice on drying equipment and farm vs elevator storage. Farmers elevator managers and equipment dealers in Butler Bremer and Chickasaw counties are invited to attend.
Mrs. Hamilton will present a group of her piano students in a recital at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday July 7 at 3:00 p.m. A reception will be held in the church parlors afterward. The public is invited to attend.
Kenneth Henline traveled to Rochester Minnesota on Tuesday to receive a medical check up at a local clinic. He is there for routine examination and assessment of health status by clinic staff.
A morning crash at the west edge of Greene at Highway 14 and a county road damaged two vehicles. It is the fourth crash at this intersection since the highway project ended. A 1950 Plymouth driven by Ann Verhulst of Kansas City Missouri was struck by a westbound 1953 International pickup driven by Clarence White of Plainfield. No injuries were reported. Verhulst’s car $200 damage and the pickup $50 damage.
The Little League and Babe Ruth squads earned wins over Marble Rock and Rockford in a Thursday night set. Little League beat Marble Rock Cubs 11 to 1 with Eimers 3 for 3 at bat and McLennan 2 for 2 including a triple. Babe Ruth Ramblers defeated Rockford 3 to 0 behind Shultz and Stuntz one hitters. Rockford later defeated the Ramblers 6 to 4 in a seven inning duel, with McLennan delivering a first inning homer and Albrecht driving in runs as the Rams rallied twice.
