Greene High speech group earns state bid at Rockford contest

G.H.S. under Mr. Wayne OBrien captured Division I honors in readers theatre choral reading and mime at the Iowa High School District Large Group Speech Contest in Rockford on Jan 24, earning a spot at state in Mason City on Feb 7.

Butler County ARC Direct Mail Fund Drive Planned

The Butler County Association for Retarded Citizens will run a county wide direct mail fund drive in February. Clarksville residents are excluded since they contribute through the United Fund. Volunteer town and township chairmen will be acknowledged later.

Lewis E. Smith services held

Services for Lewis Mick E. Smith 70 of 804 W Fifth St Waterloo were held at Sacred Heart Church. He died at Scholtz Memorial Hospital Tuesday. Born July 7 1905 in Bremer County he was the son of Peter and Gertrude Smith. He married Esther Hagarty and worked as a janitor at Waterloo Industries retiring in 1969 then at Tate Cadillac Olds Co. Survivors include his wife two daughters two brothers and a sister. he was preceded in death by one daughter.

Forest Cannon Held for Funeral and Music Festival

Forest Cannon a 44 year old sixth grade teacher with Greene Community School District died Friday January 23 at Methodist Hospital Rochester Minnesota. Funeral services were held Tuesday January 27 in Clarksville Missouri. Piano accompanists are urgently needed by the instrumental music department for the grade and junior high solo festival at Mason City on February 28. Community members who can help should contact the band office at the school immediately.

Coldwater Township Democratic Caucus Sets 40 40 20 Split

Democratic caucus members in Coldwater Township endorse Birch Bayh 40 percent Jimmy Carter 40 percent and remain 20 percent uncommitted. The county convention delegation will reflect these shares and relay four issues: roadside spraying limits, tax on farm real estate by productivity, statewide correctional facility reforms, and raising alcohol purchase age to 19 to improve enforcement.

The Senior Girl Scouts will pick up papers this Saturday January 31. Have them at the curb by 10 a.m. Papers may be in boxes bags or tied in bundles. Iowa Scholar Sherri Muhlenbruck Among 1883 State Winners

State of Iowa honors Sherri R Muhlenbruck and 1,883 high school seniors as State scholars for 1976. Recipients receive a citation from Gov. Ray and the Iowa Higher Education Facilities Commission. Applications are open to seniors in the top 15 percent based on class rank and ACT scores. Awards, announced in April, range from 3100 to 600 and may cover tuition and fees at eligible Iowa colleges, universities, area schools and hospital nursing schools.

Greene Education Association ratifies 1976 77 contract

On January 22 the Greene Education Association ratified a master contract for the 1976 1977 school year. The Greene School Board will meet at 1 30 p m January 30 to accept or reject the proposed contract after 54 hours of negotiations between teachers and the board representatives.

Cornbowl Music Festival slated for Saturday Feb 7

A major high school music event concludes the Cornbowl Conference All-Star Festival with an 85 voice choir 96 member concert band and 18 member jazz band performing February 7 1976 at 730 p m in St Ansgar High School Gymnasium Iowa The eight participating schools Greene Nashua Nora Springs Rock Falls North Central Riceville Rockford Rockwell Swaledale plus guest clinicians Dr Allan Kellar and Jimmie Reynolds lead the ensembles including Greene students named to all star groups and the conference bands.

Flags stolen from courthouse lawn in Butler County

Three flags on a pole outside the Butler County Courthouse were stolen last weekend. The county sheriff's office is investigating the theft of an American flag, a Iowa flag, and a Bicentennial flag.
