Butler County unveils a five year construction plan detailing road repairs and infrastructure upgrades in Moe Biter. Officials outline phased projects, funding sources, and expected completion timelines to support growth and safety in the region.
Butler County Board of Supervisors approves a 1976 Secondary Road Construction Program totaling 615000 with 253000 local motor fuel tax 290000 farm to market funds and 72000 federal safer roads demo funds. A 1977 1980 priority list outlines yearly spending and major resurfacing and bridge projects with review and potential shifts based on funds.
Girl Scouts in the Cedar District Council begin their annual cookie and cracker sale Friday January 30. Junior Cadette and Senior troops will take orders with profits funding troop activities and a Camp credit bonus. Recipes show cookies used in desserts like a vanilla strawberry ice cream cup and a nutty cheese ball with Sesame Crisps.
Funeral services for Emmett Hanley 95 who died January 12 were held January 15 at 9:30 a.m. at St Marys Catholic Church with Monsignor Edmund Cooney officiating. Burial followed in St Marys Cemetery Greene. Surviving are a nephew Clare Hanley Yakima Washington a niece Katherine Mrs Tom Cox Chicago Illinois and a great nephew and three great nieces and several great great nephews and nieces. Preceded by his parents and siblings.
Four basic committees were named by President David Tower from the general committee with plans to add more as work progresses. Finance will include Senne Dunn Ebling Grumley Lindell and Senne. Mrs. Glen Shaffer 51 died Monday night at her Greene home. Born October 18 1924 in Ackley she was daughter of Christian J Freese and Edna Freese. Survived by husband Glen two daughters Lynnette and Teresa Jayne mother Edna Freese of Ackley one brother Calvin Freese and four sisters Norma Neumeyer Erma Moreland Darlene Bull Sharon Sietsema. Funeral at First Presbyterian Church Greene burial East Friesland Cemetery rural Ackley Reids Funeral Chapel in charge. Greene Cub Pack meets Wednesday January 28 at Greene Community Center.
Ackley-Geneva tops Greene Invitational with 156 points, Plainfield 137, Lake Mills 126, Denver 97. Final team scores and match results show Jordan over Sonnack for the title, Sprecher third, with detailed prelims and finals across 105 to 138 pound classes and multiple byes and pins.
Dr George Orndorf will spend two months in the area beginning January at Park Clinic Mason City with pediatricians gaining pediatrics experience. In February he will be at Floyd County Memorial Hospital with Dr Kelly in surgery and on call in the emergency room. He plans weekend visits in Greene to meet locals and become acquainted with the community.
An area snowmobile club is being formed. A meeting is scheduled for Thursday January 22 at 7 30 p m in the community center. For details come to the meeting.
The Greene fourth fifth and sixth grade girls will be featured performers at halftime of the girls and boys basketball games this Friday night when Nora Springs visits. The fourth and fifth graders will showcase basketball skills at halftime of the girls game, while the sixth graders perform at halftime of the boys contest.
The past week saw a light snow trace and a minor freezing rain trace on Sunday night. Daily highs ranged from 12 to 45 degrees, with lows from 2 to 24. Greene Jr High & High School will issue report cards to students on January 22 or 23.
Larry Backer of Fremont Township was elected chairman at the January 5 organizational meeting. Other officers include Darold Harken as vice chairman, Mrs. Cliff Ackerman as secretary, and Wilbur Dye as treasurer. Seven new council members were named, with monthly meetings set for 7:30 p.m. on the fourth Monday at the Allison extension office. A nutrition project update noted 78 meals served, milk service expanded, and calls urged for reservations and volunteers in Greene and county sites.

Mark Miller, a Waldorf College freshman, earns dean's list honors for the first semester with a 3.2 GPA. He is the son of M and Galen Miller of Bristow.
