Permanent wind erosion controls urged for Butler County cropland
Wind erosion threatens Butler County farmland as exposed topsoil blows in winter. Soil Conservation Service official Ken Leiting notes much fall tillage was completed but lack of moisture and snow keeps soil unfrozen. At a Conservation Tillage meeting, 60 farmers reported 15 20 percent of cropland minimum tilled this fall, prompting calls for permanent measures such as disking or chiseling to shield topsoil.
