Blooddrive Seeks Greene Donors At St James Lutheran

The American Red Cross calls for donors in Greene to attend the Bloodmobile at St James Lutheran Church Allison on Feb 17 from 1 to 6 pm. Contact Esther Backer or Sylvia Hawker to volunteer. Eligibility includes 18 to 66 years old, at least 110 pounds, in good health, no recent illness or major surgery, no medications, and no history of hepatitis jaundice malaria or cancer. Donors may give every eight weeks.

Permanent wind erosion controls urged for Butler County cropland

Wind erosion threatens Butler County farmland as exposed topsoil blows in winter. Soil Conservation Service official Ken Leiting notes much fall tillage was completed but lack of moisture and snow keeps soil unfrozen. At a Conservation Tillage meeting, 60 farmers reported 15 20 percent of cropland minimum tilled this fall, prompting calls for permanent measures such as disking or chiseling to shield topsoil.

Weather and School Board Action in Greene IA

Snow was light with a trace in our area while a 54 degree day and strong winds occurred on the 29th. Temperatures for the prior 24 hours are listed. The Greene School Board met January 30 approving the master contract with Greene teachers and a coop purchasing contract with Area Education Agency 2. The next meeting is February 9 at 1 30 p.m.
