Telephone Companies Approve Merger
Stockholders of the Hudson Mutual Telephone Company of Hudson have approved a proposed merger with United Telephone Company of Iowa. A joint announcement said the merger depends on rulings by the Iowa Commerce Commission and other agencies. Hudson serves about 1200 telephones in suburbs south of Waterloo Cedar Falls. United serves 60,000 telephones in 52 Iowa communities and is part of the United Telephone System. United's Iowa headquarters are in Newton. All Hudson employees will join United. Mr Paul Degener will continue as United manager.

Jane Witwer of Greene has been awarded a Student Aid Scholarship for the spring term at the University of Iowa. A junior in the College of Liberal Arts, she joins 158 other recipients established in 1945 by the State Board of Regents. The award covers all tuition for the semester.

Mrs Ronald Stewart Returns From Hawaii
Mrs Ronald Stewart arrived in Greene last Wednesday after a week in Honolulu with her husband who was on rest and recreation from Viet Nam duties. Ronald promoted to Sergeant on December 1. Sgt Stewart returns to Chu Lai Viet Nam and will join his battalion for three months in Okinawa then four months in Viet Nam before returning to the United States.

Rites Today for L. C. Whitehead
Lawrence C. Whitehead Sr. 83 of Greene died Sunday after a lingering illness. Born February 10 1884 in Victor Iowa he married Ernie M. Moore March 6 1912 in Marengo and they moved to Greene in 1931. Survivors include his wife two sons five daughters sixteen grandchildren eighteen great grandchildren and one sister. Funeral services today at 2:00 pm at Reid's Funeral Chapel with Rev. Donald K. Welsh Sr. officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Rites Held for Carlton Bier 64 in Greene
Carlton Leo Bier 64 died at his home in Greene on Saturday. He was born October 16, 1903, in Greene, son of Karl and Ellis Bier. He lived in Greene his whole life and is survived by a brother Floyd Bier of Charles City. A Navy veteran of World War II, he worked many years as a movie projectionist. Graveside rites were held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. W R Debner officiating.

1968 County Road Construction Program Approved by Supervisors
The Butler County Board of Supervisors approved the 1968 Road Construction Program with expenditures of 422,600 dollars and an additional 248,000 funded by the State Farm to Market Road Fund for new construction. Projects include four plus miles of asphaltic concrete from southwest of Shell Rock to the Beaver Shell Rock line, a second stretch toward Clarks ville to Iowa 14, and multiple grading, bridge, and earth shoulder works aimed at paving readiness for 1969.

Glenn Lindell Injured in Waterloo Park Accident
Glenn Lindell 51 of Greene a Waterloo Park Department worker was seriously injured Wednesday in Gates Park Waterloo when a truck mounted crane boom fell while removing dead elm trees. He suffered multiple broken vertebrae a fractured skull and a broken arm. An investigation cited a missing positioning pin in the boom as a possible cause.
