The Rev Clayton Becker of Greene joins 300 Iowa Methodist pastors at the Iowa Pastors School January 26-29 in Indianola. Prominent speakers include retired Bishop Ivan Holt of St. Louis on Ecumenical Movement, Dr Harold Carr of Iliff School Denver on inspiration, Dr Douglas Steere of Haverford on Devotional Life, and Rev Edgar Jackson on meditating God’s Redeeming Love. The event is one of the nation’s oldest and largest minister training sessions.

The Greene sewage treatment project seeks a $21,000 federal grant after certification under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. Mayor Cecil Starkweather notes the grant likely will be awarded, with total project costs around $70,000 including a $15,000 lift station for the western area, and plans by Wallace and Holland of Mason City to allow an early spring start.
Army Specialist Four Galen G Menken 20 son of George Menken of Greene received the Good Conduct Medal in Germany while serving with the U S Army Garrison Berlin. He is a Greene High School 1956 graduate who entered the Army in February 1957 and arrived in Europe in July 1957.
Four Greene Community High School students received excellent and good ratings at the Mohawk Speech Meet in Mason City. Jerry Knight and Kenny Parks spoke affirmative while Jerry Becker and Bruce Mead argued negative. Nineteen schools from Minnesota and Iowa competed. The question was should the U S adopt essential features of the British education system. The Greene entrants won one round but fell one point short of a second round. Mrs Juchard Wagoner taught and served as a judge.
Members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars met at the Veterans Club Tuesday evening January 13 for a business meeting and election of officers. The new officers are Neil O'Brien president and Howard Raisty secretary treasurer. The board of directors are Jack Whitehead Roy Meehan Darrell Kingery and Florian Rutz.
The Brotherhood and women of St John’s Lutheran Vilmar unite with the Sunday School to sponsor Rev Merrill Clark in New Guinea at $1600 yearly. Clark leads a 10 000 native population area with 47 native evangelists at 19 stations, based from St Paul Minnesota.

State Conservation Commission reminds sportsmen that open season on cottontail and jackrabbits ends at 6:00 P.M. January 31. 1959 is noted for high rabbit numbers and favorable shooting conditions while other game remains open statewide including crows weasel fox ground hog and wolf-coyote.

Fern Ethel Cook born March 13 1903 daughter of Samuel H Maxwell and Ida E C Maxwell died Friday January 16 after nearly a year long illness in Story County Hospital at age 53 years 10 months 16 days She married George H Cook February 9 1925 at Marshalltown they lived mainly in Story County with years in Greene Cerro Gordo and Roanoke Virginia Survivors include husband daughter Marilyn Erickson granddaughter Joy Annetta Erickson a brother and sister Preceded in death by parents and son George Hobart who died serving in the Philippines during World War II Funeral at the Christian Church in Nevada Tuesday afternoon attended by Mrs Merle Heckman Mrs Robert Curtis and W C Moon.
Mrs M K Sperry of Greene will chair the 1959 Heart Campaign in Butler County Iowa with Frank F Carideo of Cedar Rapids directing the drive. The Iowa Heart Association will run its third annual fund raising drive in February peaking on Heart Sunday February 22 with a door to door collection by thousands of volunteers. Seventy five percent of funds stay in the county and state for local heart programs and research. Mrs Sperry expects Butler County to top last year’s total and notes heart disease caused over 57 percent of Iowa deaths in 1957 with nationwide victims under 65 making up 29 percent.
The annual meeting of the Round Grove Golf and Country Club will be held next Wednesday evening January 28 at 8 00 o clock at Hamilton's Furniture.

Approximately 200 Alcoholics Anonymous members their spouses and guests filled Lutheran Church parlors for a 6:30 turkey dinner. Lon J from Center City Minnesota spoke on the eleventh step, emphasizing prayer and seeking God’s will to improve conscious contact. Attendees came from several Iowa towns and Minnesota, and the meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
Paul Bickley Bennett died of a heart attack in Evanston Illinois. Services were held Monday at 11:00 at O Keefe and Towne Funeral Chapel in Waterloo. Burial followed at Elmwood Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Drew Bennett and three children Paul Jr Marjorie and Debra.
Young people of the Presbyterian Church will lead the eleven oclock service next Sunday January 3. The theme is Dare We Live In the Household of God. Bruce Mead Craig Burroughs and Lorene Butler will deliver the messages. A young peoples choir will sing.

Lord Calvin K. Kelly announced the sale of the Otto Menken home on Foat Street to Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Kleinemiller of Plainfield. The Menkens have purchased the Gordon Maxwell acreage one and one half miles north of town.
Fred Otto Mohring of Charles City is jailed in Butler County for OMVI after arraignment in Justice of Peace Frank Knight's Court. Jome Francis Pitz, also of Charles City, was bound over to District Court on driving while license suspended and related offenses after a Sunday arraignment. Ramblers beat Clarksville 69 to 39. Clarksville girls lost 53 to 45.
Keith Harris son of Mr and Mrs Cecil Harris has enlisted in the Air Force. He left Sunday for Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas where he will be stationed.
The 1958 circulation at the Public Library totaled 19 162 books and periodicals, above the five year average of 19 1041. Of this total 8 901 were juvenile, 3 721 adult fiction, and 4 440 adult non fiction and periodicals. The Greene Library collections number about 8 750.

New residents Mr and Mrs Howard Seguelin of Estacada Oregon welcomed a daughter born January 14 weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces. Grandmothers are Mrs Alfred Seguelin and Mrs Pearl Truex. Mr and Mrs Donald Jones of Hampton have a son born January 14 weighing 7 pounds 2 ounces named Kevin Scott. Mrs Jones is formerly Caral Ver Plank, daughter of and Mrs Dale Ver Plank. Mr and Mrs Richard McRoberts of Stockton California are parents of a daughter born December 29 weighing 7 pounds 11 ounces named Joyce Ele. Paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs John McRoberts of Greene.
Donald Kirke Potter was discharged and returned to his parents after four years in the navy. He spent eight months in the Far East aboard the U S S Portuga L S P 26 during this period.
